The Seoul Olympic Sports Promotion Foundation (SOSFO) has been devoted to the creation of a healthy society since successfully hosting the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. SOSFO is providing support to promote national sports, research in sports science, and is fostering the sound development of our younger generation.
Following the World Cup and the enforcement of a 5-day workweek, the national desire for sports has increased to new heights. SOSFO is performing pivotal roles in the promotion of the ever-expanding importance of sports in society's new focus on leisure time.
SOSFO will provide more effective financial support through the national sports promotion fund, which has contributed to turning Korea into a world sports power. It will expand the range of support so that more people, particularly those in the low-income groups or those living in underdeveloped areas, can equally benefit from the programs offered.
Towards this end, SOSFO intends to expand its sports centers to all areas of the country to offer low-cost first-class sports opportunities for all persons. It has actively supported and will continue to promote the installment of grass and urethane-surfaced sports facilities on school playgrounds.

They couldn't wait to uplift hero Dimas
August 22, 2004 ATHENS The crowd wanted to venerate Pyrros Dimas and Pyrros Dimas thought that was a very good idea. ADVERTISEMENT For more than five minutes, the home fans cheered, sang, and chanted in honor of the three-time Olympic weightlifting gold medalist, and never mind that this was taking place at the outset of the medal ceremony and their man was in the unaccustomed position of having just won a bronze. They were going to make sure it was all Pyrros, all the time. If this wound up being interpreted as an insult to Georgian George Asanidze, who had won the gold, and Andrei Rybakou of Belarus, who had won the silver, the Greek fans flat-out didn't care. They were here to worship Pyrros Dimas. "Understand that these Games are being held in Greece and the stadium is packed with Greeks," shrugged Dimas. "The Greeks knew what I had been through these past four years, and even these past few days, and they also knew this was my last match. I am withdrawing from competition. "They showed me their love, and I thank them dearly for that."

History Rules Equipment Technique ... Sports Entry Forms
Although Weightlifting is considered the sport of strength, history has shown that the athlete's strength must be accompanied by skills developed from a knowledgeable trainer. Weightlifting consists of two movements executed in a standard order: first the snatch and then the clean and jerk. There are both men and women Weightlifting events. Each athlete has the right to three attempts for each movement. The athlete’s best performances in both movements are put together to determine the final placement.
ATHENS 2004 Weightlifting During the ATHENS 2004 Games, Weightlifting will be held in the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall . The competition schedule will run through ten competition days, from 14 to 25 August, with rest days on 17 August and 22 August.

Terrorists turn '72 Munich Olympics into bloodbath
Eleven Israeli athletes are killed during daylong siege. Airport shootout also leaves 5 captors, 1 policeman dead.
By BRUCE LOWITT Time was, wars were suspended during the Olympics and armies prohibited from attacking the ancient Games. Truces permitted worshippers and athletes to travel safely. Times change. Modern Olympics have been suspended for two world wars. At 4:30 a.m. Sept. 5, 1972, war, politics and religion invaded the Munich Olympics. Terrorists claiming to be from Black September, a Palestinian guerrilla group, stole into the Olympic Village dressed as athletes and carrying their weapons in gym bags. They killed two Israelis and took nine hostage. The terrorists demanded the release of 200 Arab guerrillas jailed in Israel and safe passage for themselves and the hostages. By 11 p.m. the hostages, five of their captors and one West German police officer were dead, the outcome of a failed rescue attempt. Three Arabs were captured.

A is A Communications The The Weightlifting Encyclopedia (WLE), The Weightlifting Encyclopedia Video Companion (WEV) and the NEW "Referee's Pal" Real secrets? They aren't easy to find. But once found, they are usually easy to understand. And the best kept secret in all of weight training and fitness is Olympic-style Weightlifting. Olympic-style Weightlifters are the strongest and most powerful men and women in the world (they are also among the fastest and most flexible). Top weightlifters are stronger than "bodybuilders" like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or pro football players, or pro wrestlers, or "World's Strongest Man" competitors. Yet most people know very little, if anything, about competitive Weightlifters. If you are lucky, you catch a glimpse of them every four years, when the Olympics are broadcast. Then they go back into their essentially secret training quarters in very specialized gyms for another four years. These athletes and their coaches know more about the intricacies of effective weight training than anyone alive, yet very few people, even the "experts" in your local gym, have any idea of how competitive Weightlifters exercise to develop their great strength or their attractively muscled bodies (no, they aren't born strong - nor do they rely on dangerous drugs or "breakthrough" food supplements to get that way). Amazingly, the muscles of champion weightlifters do not have what some people consider to be the almost "freakish" look of the bodybuilders you see posing their oiled and artificially tanned bodies on TV or magazine covers. Yet the muscles of champion weightlifters are generally stronger, more powerful, more flexible

http://www.wlinfo.com/what_is_olympic.htm
What Is Olympic-Style Weightlifting All About? The sport of Olympic-style "Weightlifting" is one of the world's most misunderstood and under-appreciated sports. Part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 (with a women's event having been added in 2000), Weightlifting is the only Olympic sport in which heavy weights are used. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognize only two weightlifting events, which must be done in all competitions in the following order: a) the two hands snatch (snatch), and b) the two hands clean and jerk (C&J). The overall winner of any weightlifting competition is the athlete who lifts the highest amount of weight in the snatch and C&J (i.e., the heaviest weights successfully lifted in each event are combined) . This combined score is called the "Total." While awards are given at major competitions for each event as well as the Total, recognition in the sport of weightlifting goes to the athlete who lifts the greatest total weight in competition. When a weightlifting aficionado speaks of the "World Champion" in weightlifting, he or she is generally speaking about the winner in the Total. In the snatch , the bar is pulled in one explosive motion from the floor to full arm's length overhead. In order to make the lift easier to perform, athletes typically bend their legs quickly while the bar is rising in order to catch the bar at arm's length. The combined attributes of great strength and blinding speed are needed to accomplish this challenging event effectively. The best lifters in the world (in the lighter weight classes can lift as much as 2.5 times their bodyweight in the Snatch). The best superheavyweight weightlifters in history have lifted nearly 500 lb./227.5 kg. in this lift.
