Athens Olympics Weightlifting
Weightlifting at the Athens Olympics will take place between 14th - 25th August at the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall Most of Greece will likely be watching when countrymen Pyrros Dimas (187 pounds) and Kakhi Kakiasvilis (207 pounds) try to become four-time Olympic champions. Only three Olympic athletes have won four golds in the same event. Neither is a favorite; Dimas is 32, Kakiasvilis is 35, and neither won a medal in the European championships last spring. The big story might again come from one of the smallest competitors - two-time gold medalist Halil Mutlu of Turkey is only 4-11 but can lift more than 400 pounds. Women's weightlifting returns after debuting in Sydney, and American Tara Cunningham (105 pounds, 48 kg) goes for a second gold after a surprise win in 2000.

One arm?!
In 1896 was weightlifting for the first time on the program. In 2 categories. The one-armed weightlifting and the two-armed. The very first Olympic champion was Viggo Jensen (Denmark) who weightlifted with two arms, the second weightlifted the same weight, but he moved his foot and became second.
Weak
By the first Olympics had a official to remove a weight, what didn't succeed. Prince George of Greece, who was in the organizationcommittee duck and removed the weight to the right place.
Points
How do you know who the winner is? In 1896 was it just the one who got the most weight above in a category. In 1900, 1908 and 1912 was weightlifting not at the program, so that was not so difficult. In 1920 was it determined over 3 parts: one-armed pulling, one-armed pushing and two-armed pushing. In 1924 was two-armed pressing and two-armed pulling added. From 1928 to 1972 was it determined by the cast up of the weights by two-armed pulling, pushing and pressing. In 1976 was pressing been carried off, because the official couldn't decide if the execution was right. Then determined it, of the total weight of the two-armed pulling and pushing.
Scandals
The Olympics shouldn't call the Olympics if there wasn't a scandal. In 1995 were 64 athletes disqualified because they used doping. In 1992, put weightlifting in a unfavourable light, because Ibrahim Samedov (CIS) lifted the same as the second place. But he was heavier, and according to the rules he had to been placed lower (so the 3

So strong are the feelings that ASOIF - the body representing the summer Games sports - has called an extraordinary general assembly in Geneva on June 7. COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (January 5, 2005) - - The United States Olympic Committee today announced its ninth Community Olympic Development Program. Located in Brownsville, Texas, and hosted by the Foundation for Brownsville Sports, the newest CODP will offer weightlifting and boxing to the diverse border community. In conjunction with USA Weightlifting and USA Boxing, the Brownsville Foundation for Sports will work with other community sports groups to provide beginner to elite programs. Two-time men's weightlifting Olympic champion Zhan Xugang said that the Anti-Doping Regulations, the first anti-doping law in the country, is a great piece of news for athletes.
"I myself is strongly against the use of banned drugs," said the 30-year-old Zhan on Monday when the new regulations went into effect. "I am fully aware that my health would be seriously damaged if I used banned substance. "
"I believe in the saying that no pains, no gains. I work really hard to win what I deserve, "said Zhan.
Zhan is working hard on the road to his third Olympic appearance. He pulled off the 77kg division title in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games after winning the 69kg class in Atlanta in 1996.
Ding Meiyuan, women's 75kg and plus category winner in Sydney, agreed with her national teammate.

Weightlifting was Nott her first choice
Associated Press
Tara Nott once figured her ticket to the Olympics was in gymnastics, and she was talented enough to compete in several regional events. That wasn't good enough. So Nott decided to try to win an Olympic medal in soccer, and she was skilled enough to play on the U.S. under-19 and under-23 national teams. Tara Nott wasn't quite strong enough in her previous sports to make an Olympics team. She made it to the 1996 Games, all right, but only as an athlete liaison. Finally, her break came when a pair of coaches she met before the Olympics, Lyn Jones and Mike Gattone, noticed her short but powerful physique and persuaded her to try ... weightlifting? And try she did, becoming a U.S. record-holder in several categories and earning a spot on the team going to Sydney, where female weightlifting will be a full-fledged Olympic event for the first time. More familiar with back flips than back lifts, Nott wasn't totally sold on the sport at first. She was strong, very strong, but she had always participated in sports where flexibility, litheness and speed afoot were required more than strength. This was a whole new world.

The horrors of Saddam's 'sadist' son
By Tom Farrey
ESPN.com
In the history of the world, an expanse that covers Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler and other despots both past and present, there is no shortage of absolute rulers whose human rights records compare with that of today's designated pariah, Saddam Hussein. Since being charged with overseeing the Iraqi National Olympic Committee in 1984, Uday Hussein allegedly has made sport of imprisoning, torturing and murdering athletes. There may never have been a sports official, though, as brutal as his son, Uday. As president of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee, Uday allegedly tortures athletes for losing games. He sticks them in prison for days or months at a time. Has them beaten with iron bars. Caned on the soles of their feet. Chained to walls and left to stay in contorted positions for days. Dragged on pavement until their backs are bloody, then dunked in sewage to ensure the wounds become infected. If Uday stops by a player's jail cell, he might urinate on his bowed, shaven head. Just to humiliate him. This is the picture that emerges of Uday Saddam Hussein from ESPN.com interviews in the United States and England with former Iraqi national team athletes in several sports. Some of them claim they were personally tortured. All of them say they lived in fear that they would be punished at Uday's whim.
