History of Weightlifting
Humans have been holding contests to measure individual strength and power for thousands of years. In Ancient Greece , weightlifters held competitions to determine who could lift the heaviest rocks . Later on, the Greeks invented dumbbells for weightlifting competitions. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the method of removing clappers from bells, which made them soundless during lifting. Weightlifting became an event at the first modern Olympics in 1896 and the World Weightlifting Championships have been held every year since 1891. Women first started competing in the Championships in 1987.
Weightlifting: Snatch, Clean and Jerk
The two events in Olympic weightlifting are the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk . The Snatch is a one-motion lift from the floor to an overhead position, with the lifter catching the barbell in a squat position. In the Snatch the bar travels close to the body and is accelerated by a jump and shrug motion during the second "pull" phase of the lift. The

[Categories: Weightlifting, Individual sports, Olympic sports]
Weightlifting is a sport where competitors attempt to lift heavy weights mounted on (An alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon; widely used in construction; mechanical properties can be varied over a wide range) steel bars.
Weightlifting contests have been common since ancient times (and were apparently included in the ancient Greek (The modern revival of the ancient games held once every 4 years in a selected country) Olympics ), and were a part of the original Olympic Games in 1896. Women's weightlifting began in the (The decade from 1980 to 1989) and was added to the Olympic program in 2000.
Weights are mounted on a steel (A bar to which heavy discs are attached at each end; used in weightlifting) barbell which (Click link for more info and facts about weighs) weighs (One thousand grams; the basic unit of mass adopted under the Systeme International d'Unites) kilogram s for male competition and 15 for female competition. The weights themselves are rubber-coated steel discs, color-coded for their different weights, and held in place by 2.5 kg collars. Identical weights are placed at each end of the barbell. The barbell has patterns (knurling) engraved on it to assist the lifters to get a steady grip on the bar. Competitors start with the weighted barbell placed in the middle of a 4 x 4 metre wooden floor, coated with non-slip material.

WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING - ISSUE: 2002/3
EDITORIAL Dear Friends,
Those of you who follow the events and developments of the Olympic Movement with keen interest must have been informed of the momentous IOC discussions that took place in Lausanne at the end of August, whereby the IOC Executive Board deliberated the sports programme of the future Olympic Games.
As it is known, medals were awarded in Sydney in 300 events of 28 summer Olympic sports. That is an enormous number of medals alone - and just think: more than twenty sports are in the waiting line hoping to be included in the Olympic Games programme one day.
International officials know that it is impossible to increase the number of sports and events. At the same time, it seems unavoidable to curb the number of athletes and officials to be accredited to the Games.
In that situation the International Olympic Committee had to make a move. They appointed the Programme Commission with the mission of submitting a report to the Executive Board after an analysis of the current programme and proposing a sort of "ideal" Olympic programme. It is important to understand that the Commission's mandate was of a purely technical nature, without taking into consideration any historical, national, sport political aspects, Federation interests or merits. The proposal they put on the IOC's table was therefore made on a technical, organisational, television broadcasting and economic considerations.

History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

Weightlifting in the U. S.
The man who did the most to revive American weightlifting after Windship's death was Alan Calvert. In 1893, when he was 18, Calvert saw a performance by Eugen Sandow at Columbian Exposition in Chicago and became a convert. Because it was hard to find equipment, Calvert in 1902 founded the Milo Barbell Company. He also began publishing a promotional pamphlet called Strength , which became a full-scale subscription magazine in 1914. Calvert sold both the business and the publication in 1919, but he continued to be involved with the editorial side of Strength during the early 1920s. He was one of the founders of the American Continental Weight-Lifters Association (ACWLA) in 1922, with George Jowett, who had become the editor of Strength , and Bernard Bernard, editor of Life and Health The first national championship was held in Los Angeles in 1924, using the same five lifts as in the Olympics that year. During the late 1920s, the ACWLA was challenged by the Association of Bar-Bell Men (ABBM). The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) took over control of the sport, holding its first national championship in 1929. The ACWLA and the ABBM both folded soon afterward.
