Olympic Weightlifting
Weightlifting is arguably the most spectacular of all Olympic sports. Weightlifting epitomises the human desire to seek out challenges, to attempt to do what is seemingly impossible, and to succeed. At the highest level, weightlifting is very much a contest between an athlete and his or her belief in themselves. It is a pure test of flesh and blood against iron and gravity. The Queensland Weightlifting Association (QWA) strives to promote weightlifting as a healthy and enjoyable sport for all.
Ben Turner, 2002-2003 World Senior
Championships Representative.
Deborah Lovely, 2002 Commonwealth Games 75kg Silver Medallist Through its system of clubs around the state of Queensland Australia The QWA also offers training for coaches and officials and, as an affiliated member of the Australian Weightlifting Federation, opportunities to participate in national and international events.
This web site is designed to provide a range of free services and information for committed weightlifting enthusiasts and those with just a passing interest alike. The site contains athlete profiles, competition results, state and national rankings, basic training schedules, articles and newsletters, a discussion forum, plus a whole lot more.

Sports Psychology By Yvonne Brett bretty@usq.edu.au I began working with the TWA late last year as their Psychologist. It was here that I learnt about weightlifting and began to introduce Sport Psychology to club. The next step, for me, has been to begin working with other lifters in Queensland. This was initiated by becoming an executive member of the TWA and the QWA. My next step is to establish a Sport Psychology clinic for all QWA members. Firstly, what is Sport Psychology and what role can Sport Psychology play in weightlifting? There are a number of areas where a Sport Psychologist can help you and these can be explained by four main topics: a) team building, b) lifeskills, c) crisis intervention and d) psychological skills training. Team Building is about working with a group of people who have something in common, and looking at their team structure and how they can better operate together. For example, a team travelling interstate for a period of time may need to consider travel and accommodation arrangements and how they are going to live together for an extended period of time. A crisis situation can occur for no apparent reason and without warning (such as loss of a job) or it could be caused by a build up of a number of small stresses over a period of time. It is during this time that the Psychologist can to help you cope as a form of emotional support.

Weightlifting

Weightlifting is, as the name suggests, an event where competitors try to lift more weight above their heads than anyone else. The amount they can lift is amazing, with some lifting almost three times their own weight. They not only have to lift the weight above their heads, but also hold it steady until three of five judges agree they have done so. There are two ways of lifting the weights, the snatch and the clean and jerk. In the snatch, lifters pull the weight from the ground and try to push it straight above their heads in one movement. The clean and jerk sees lifters use two movements, with the first seeing them pull the weight from the ground and then hold it at chest height. Then once they are comfortable at that point they try to hoist it above their head and then control it, again for the event's judges. Who are the British hopes?
There are two British lifters in the Games, Michaela Breeze and Kamran Panjavi. Former European bronze medallist Breeze is perhaps most likely to succeed, but both will have to be at the best to even make their finals.

Tara is Nott just another woman. She is the first American woman to earn a weightlifting gold medal (2000 Sydney Olympic Games) and she is the only athlete in history to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in three different sports. She began her athletic career as a gymnast, before becoming an All-American women's soccer player. When she missed making the 1996 U.S. Olympic soccer team, Nott started weightlifting to keep in shape; at the time women's weightlifting was not even an Olympic sport. Women's weightlifting made its debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and Nott took home the gold. Tara trains four hours, seven days a week, and her hard work and dedication have paid off. She is a holds five American records, is a four-time National champion and is one of only U.S. women who can clean and jerk twice her own body weight.

Reza Zadeh, the defending gold medallist in the super-heavyweight division, lifted 17.5 kg more than his closest competitor to retain his claim on the title "world's strongest man." Send us your News Explosive Lifting for Sports About the author : Tale of the Tape: Intro : Explosive weightlifting - is it effective? When it comes down to arguing if weightlifting is effective in increasing performance in other sports there are three distinct schools of thought. School Number 1 School Number 2 . No, it's bloody dangerous. This school of thought believes that weightlifting is good, but only if done in a slow and controlled fashion. They scoff at any idea that lifting a weight faster makes you a faster sprinter or better rugby player for example. They champion getting stronger all over via resistance training and converting these strength gains by practising the athletes given sport. This school of thought is championed by notables such as Dr Ken Leistner, Jamie Labelle, Ken Hutchins, Matt Bryzcki etc etc. They believe that lifting weights ballistically can tear your muscles and connective tissues to shreds and provide ample evidence to support the theory. They also believe that 'explosiveness' is genetic. You either have it or don't have it. They believe the best Olympic weightlifters were born not made. To quote Dr Leistner, "One can argue all day long about the "explosiveness" the lifts develop. This is like saying that playing basketball makes you 7 foot tall....". This school of thought also says that momentum is doing much of the work in an Olympic lift, not the muscles.

Former gymnast/soccer player finds silver lining
Click here for more on this story Latest: Monday September 18, 2000 10:17 AM SYDNEY, Australia On the morning of most FIFA tournament gold medal games, the staff of the international soccer body customarily engages the local organizing committee in a friendly. In the game that preceded the Olympic gold medal matchup in 1996, it was revealed that, on the field of play, Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games worker Tara Nott an otherwise engaging type who could've been cast as the fresh-faced, spunky girl-next-door on any sitcom doesn't do friendly very well. In the heat of battle Nott upended some geezer from FIFA and was yellow-carded by referee Esse Baharmast. "You have to calm down," Baharmast told Nott. Calming down is not for the 5'1", 105-pound Nott, which may explain why, after only five years of competing, she won a silver medal on Sunday in the first ever women's Olympic weightlifting competition. Nott lifted 82.5 kilograms (181.9 pounds) in the snatch and 102.5 kg (225.75 pounds) in the clean and jerk to finish behind Bulgaria's
