Suggest a link As a sport, weightlifting's origins can be traced back to ancient Greek and Egyptian societies where stones and bags filled with sand were used to display strength. Surprisingly, while the top ancient Greek weightlifters were held in high esteem and evidence exists that weightlifting competitions occurred, the sport was not included in the ancient Olympic games . The first world weightlifting competition was held in London in 1891 and won by Edward Lawrence Levy . Five years later the modern Olympics began and weightlifting was included on the as one of nine events on the program. The original Olympic weightlifting competition was based on 2 lifts, the one-handed dumbbell lift and the two-handed barbell lift. Weightlifting was dropped from the Olympics in 1900, returned in 1904 and 1906 and then was dropped again. In 1920 it reappeared and has been included in every Olympics since. 1920 also marked the first time the competitors were divided into weight classes. And this has mainly come about because a certain aspect of weightlifting, weight training, has received widespread publicity because of the beneficial effects that it has produced in almost every branch of sport. [How interesting that last sentence is - already 40 years ago, there were coaches who accepted that weight training could play an useful role in all sports training, yet there are still some today who maintain that it is useless or dangerous! Mel Siff] Today it is recognized that the successful athlete must have strength as well as skill and stamina. But it has taken our coaches a long time to appreciate that the quickest and surest way to strength in muscle and joint is to be found in applying principles similar to those used for many years by successful weightlifters. I will not develop this point now as I shall have much more to say about it later. But it might be recorded that legend has it that Milo of Crotona, an Olympic champion for no less than twenty-eight years, was the first 'scientific' weightlifter in that he progressed from strength to strength by regularly lifting a calf as it grew into a bull. That was in 684 BC and this principle of progressive weightlifting still applies today.

Smith set four world records at 200 meters and 220 yards. On May 7, he lowered the standard for the straightaway race from 20 seconds to 19.5 seconds, and on June 11 he ran around a full turn in 20 seconds to take .2 (two tenths) of a second off the world record. Both marks were set at 220 yards, thus automatically applying to the shorter 200-meter distance (218 yards 2 feet 2 inches).
