Naim Suleymanoglu - one of the all-time Olympic greats Weightlifting is the oldest of the modern Games competitions having made its debut in 1896 in Athens.
In the earliest days of the sport it was a case of he who lifts the most wins and it was only in 1920 when the forerunner to the International Weightlifting Federation was founded that a more structured approach was conceived. Weight categories were implemented and different lifts were approved. While one-armed lifts were part of the Olympics until 1928, the most commonly competed categories have been the snatch, clean-and-jerk and the press. Those three disciplines were cut to two in 1976 when the press was eliminated due to the difficulty in judging the validity of the lifts. While the disciplines have reduced, the weight classes have increased and from five prior to the Second World War, there are now eight for men and seven for women, who were invited to participate at the Olympics for the first time in 2000.

History of Weightlifting
Humans have been holding contests to measure individual strength and power for thousands of years. In Ancient Greece , weightlifters held competitions to determine who could lift the heaviest rocks . Later on, the Greeks invented dumbbells for weightlifting competitions. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the method of removing clappers from bells, which made them soundless during lifting. Weightlifting became an event at the first modern Olympics in 1896 and the World Weightlifting Championships have been held every year since 1891. Women first started competing in the Championships in 1987.
Weightlifting: Snatch, Clean and Jerk
The two events in Olympic weightlifting are the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk . The Snatch is a one-motion lift from the floor to an overhead position, with the lifter catching the barbell in a squat position. In the Snatch the bar travels close to the body and is accelerated by a jump and shrug motion during the second "pull" phase of the lift. The

History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

WEIGHTLIFTING HISTORY
Origin of Weightlifting:
Weightlifting: starting with the basics As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries.
Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001.
The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.

WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING - ISSUE: 2000/2
World Weightlifting: After English and Spanish, Now in RUSSIAN, Too! World Weightlifting, launched in 1980, is now past its 80th issue. The 48-page colour quarterly magazine which deals exclusively with weightlifting has grown very popular amongst the adherents of this sport. As it is, every ten years a “young brother” is born to World Weightlifting. In 1990, its Spanish edition “Mundo pesístico” appeared for the first time. Now, another ten years later, as of 2000, Russian-speaking fans can enjoy the publication. World Weightlifting in Russian, is being published under the sponsorship of former superheavy world champion and world record holder Anatoliy PYSARENKO, and is printed in Ukraine. In Montreal at the University World Championships, the present King of the Superheavies, Olympic, world, European (and now Student) Champion Andrei Chemerkin, also enjoyed looking at the first issue of the magazine in Russian. He thought that in Russia it would even sell from the street. We wish to mention here that – true to our traditions – issue 2000/3 of World Weightlifting will be entirely devoted to the subject of the Olympic Games. Stories, statistics, rarity photographs, interviews with Olympic heros will revoke the more than 100 years of Olympic history of weightlifting and try to search into the future.
