Can dogs be trained to sniff out problem weeds?
Spotted knapweed costs Montana $42 million per year
'Nightmare' hunts for knapweed hidden in a cinderblock. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Offbeat Research Montana or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? BILLINGS, Montana (AP) Someday soon, man's best friend could also be one of his biggest allies in the fight against noxious weeds. That's the hope of researchers like Kim Goodwin, who are studying whether dogs can be trained to detect the prolific and problematic spotted knapweed the same way they can be trained to sniff out drugs and bombs. Goodwin, a weed prevention coordinator at Montana State University at Bozeman, said she got the idea for putting dogs to work by seeing how dogs have been used at airports, mail facilities and ports of entry to search for everything from illegal drugs and bombs to prohibited agricultural products. "I thought maybe dogs could do the same thing across landscapes because we have a problem with invasive plants spreading," she said. "To be most effective with weeds spreading, we have to detect them early."

Giant reed invades Southern California beaches
The fast-growing reed Arundo Donax is swamping Southern California beaches August 12, 1998
Web posted at: 11:03 p.m. EDT (0303 GMT) The Arundo Donax plant, or giant reed, is destroying native species and ruining the landscape. "It's the weed from hell," said Ventura resident Jerry Rebard. "It's terrible. It cuts your feet when you're coming in," a surfer complained. Normally, the plant wouldn't be within miles of a Southern California beach. But the Mediterranean plant was brought to the state more the 60 years ago to help control riverbank erosion. For that purpose, the fast-growing plant did its job but its success has turned to excess. This year, it's especially bad, because heavy winter rains carried the quick-rooting reed fragments from mountain rivers to ocean beaches, where they thrive.

About the Calweed Database The California Interagency Noxious Weed Coordinating Committee is a group of sixteen State and Federal agencies meeting quarterly, in conjunction with stakeholders, to coordinate activities with respect to noxious weed control. A central project of the group has been to create an Internet accessible database, which acts as a clearing-house for noxious weed control projects in California. The database contains information on who is controlling which noxious weeds in California and what methods they are using. This information is searchable by keywords. The California Noxious Weed Control Projects Inventory (CNWCPI) is a a part of the more comprehensive Natural Resource Projects Inventory (NRPI) . In addtion to the Noxious Weeds Project, NRPI also includes the

Find Osama In our home gardens , weeds demand a great portion of our time and effort to cultivate a beautiful garden. In the economy of agriculture, controlling weeds is a serious, mission-critical, operation. We are surrounded by weeds. Ever since humans began planting and cultivating plants, weeds have been a problem. A weed is any plant in the wrong place. Weeds take valuable space, water, sunlight and nutrients that may otherwise be accessible to important crops. This degrades the quality of agricultural products, increases costs, and may result in poor nutrition for the intended consumer. Consequently, many agricultural solutions include efficient, but potentially toxic chemicals.

Cultivating Weeds
Is your yard a menace to parks and wild lands?
Janet Raloff In 1985, shortly after buying a heavily shaded home in one of Washington, D.C.'s northern suburbs, I installed 35 liriope plants ( Liriope muscari ), also known as turf lilies. Gardening books recommend these East Asian, shade-tolerant border plants because the 10-inch clumps of vegetation "don't creep"—that is, invade surrounding areas. And for 15 years, those plants maintained a neat border that separated my lawn from a hill stabilized with English ivy. Four years ago, something changed. A few clumps of two or three spindly liriope leaves sprouted in the lawn. By last summer, hundreds of clumps were infesting the property—in some cases, up to 50 feet from the liriope border. FRIEND AND FOE. The dainty dog violet (above) thrives in woodlands, unless shrouded by the dense buckthorn trees (below).
