Introduction Downy brome ( Bromus tectorum ), also commonly known as cheatgrass and Junegrass, is an annual or typically a winter annual belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a major problem in winter wheat and alfalfa in Montana. Plant Identification Downy brome plants stand from 5 to 60 cm tall and are covered with soft hairs at all growth stages. The stems of a mature downy brome plant grow in large tufts. The flat leaves are 4 to 16 cm long, 2 to 4 mm wide, and light green. The ligules are membranous and short (3 mm). Figure 1 illustrates the leaf sheath of a small downy brome plant. Figure 2 shows the short ligule. Figure 1 . The leaf sheath and blades of a young downy brome plant. Figure 2 . The ligule of a downy brome plant. The spikelets are numerous, hairy, narrow (3/8 to ¾ inch long), and on slender curved threadlike branches. Each spikelet has 3 to 7 florets.

2004 Weed Research Annual Report Available in Print or Download Illinois Winter Annual Grass Species
Winter annual weeds have become a management problem for many growers in Illinois. Field identification of winter annual grasses is often difficult since several of these species are similar in appearance. This information is intended to aid in proper winter annual grass identification to enable the development of effective weed management strategies if necessary. Field observations from past years have indicated that these species have slightly different emergence patterns. Annual bluegrass, little barley and downy brome tend to emerge more in the fall, while emergence of Carolina foxtail is more pronounced in the spring. Italian ryegrass, however, has been observed to have an equal tendency to emerge in the fall or spring. Downy brome is often confused with cheat. However, downy brome is more prevelant in Illinois and has numerous, prominent hairs on the leaf and sheath. Please refer to the identification flow chart and species description for more information.

Basic and applied studies in weed ecology, weed-crop competition, herbicide efficacy, environmental fate, crop tolerance, and cultural agronomics are conducted to assess the impact of weed interference, determine critical weed density thresholds, discover ways to optimize herbicide performance and crop safety, and integrate cultural and chemical control methods. Experimental and non-labeled herbicides are evaluated to assess their fit and potential usefulness in semi-arid dry land cropping systems.

They contribute to substantial levels of crop loss in smallholder systems, particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics, where a combination of resource constraints at household level, difficult-to-control species, and often a poor understanding of crop/weed interactions complicate the development of sustainable control systems. In many farming systems of the developing world weed control is the most labour demanding pre-harvest operation, for example accounting for up to 60% of labour used for maize production in sub-Saharan Africa. Very often women and children shoulder much of this burden. Removing wild rice (
