Wisconsin Extension agronomists and horticulturalists respond to the needs of Wisconsin growers and related agribusinesses. Programs are developed that build the knowledge base and decision-making skills of agricultural professionals in the state. This involves workshops, hands-on training sessions, field days, and a diversity of educational meetings and materials. The Wisconsin Crop Manager newsletter is a weekly publication that provides real-time information on current agricultural and horticultural issues throughout the growing season. The Agronomy Advice articles are short articles that address specific weed problems or other weed management issues. Many of the articles found here are also found elsewhere on this website. Weed Profiles are information-packed fact sheets about specific weeds including their biology, habitat, distribution, importance, and management. Current herbicide labels and IPM strategies are discussed in the Weed Management section. Herbicide registrations that occur after the printed recommendation publications have gone to press are also found here.

Glyphosate resistant Italian ryegrass in Oregon
Italian ryegrass that is resistant to the herbicide glyphosate was confirmed in 2004 in Oregon, and plants from several other suspect sites are currently in resistance testing. Herbicide resistance is the ability of a plant to survive a herbicide application that in the past controlled that species.

Welcome to the CWSS website. This is a vibrant national society dedicated to the study and understanding of weeds and their impact on the agricultural landscape. This website is designed to inform members and interested parties of the activities of the society and to share and disseminate weed science knowledge in Canada. CWSS members are dedicated to a proactive approach to issues related to weed management at a provincial and federal level. The Working Groups were specifically designed to address timely and relevant issues that challenge all levels of agriculture from the research scientist to the farmer. With the focus on the delivery of the latest information on weed management CWSS has developed a monograph series such as Integrated Weed Management: Explore the Potential and Field Boundary Habitats: Implications for Weed, Insect and Disease Management (see below). The International Weed Science Society (IWSS) was formed in 1975, by individuals from Europe, North America, South America, and the Asian-Pacific area, to deal with global weed science issues. The Society has held three highly successful International Weed Control Congresses, in Australia (1992), Denmark (1996), Brazil (2000), and in South Africa (2004); its next Congress will be in Vancouver, Canada (2008). The IWSS is a worldwide scientific organization, open to all who are interested in weeds and their control. The formation of IWSS was promoted actively by the six existing regional weed science societies. The purpose of IWSS is to supplement and complement their vital role. Additionally, IWSS provides benefits and functions of a weed science society not currently existing at a national or regional level. Click to Join The International Weed Science Society. Career Opportunities

Usually, more employment opportunities are available in CWS than there are qualified graduates. Producers require annual inputs such as seed, fertilizers and herbicides, so they seek assistance in sales or service areas such as crop consulting, chemical application and soil testing each year. Therefore, opportunities for CWS graduates usually have been more stable than for employment areas where inputs can be deferred when income is low. Also, salaries for CWS graduates are at or near the top among all graduates in agriculture.
The employment opportunities in CWS can best be summarized by the jobs that our graduates have accepted. Our graduates have been employed as: (1) crop production consultants (agronomist); (2) marketing experts for herbicides, fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals; (3) managers of farm service centers for cooperatives and elevators; (4) agents in the production and marketing of certified seeds; (5) research technicians for private companies and universities; (6) natural resources conservationists and agents for other governmental agencies; (7) county agricultural extension agents; (8) field representatives for sugarbeet or food processing companies; (9) farm managers; (10) farm insurance agents; (11) research associates with private plant breeding companies; and (12) persons involved in the reclamation of strip-mined land.
