Objectives of the treasure hunt
Right at the start of the course we needed to be sure that the students could complete some fundamental tasks with the computers and software and we also needed a record of who had and had not completed the following:
  • obtain and use a student network account log into the computers in the undergraduate lab obtain their account and log into the electronic conferences (FirstClass) download and read a document from FirstClass use a web browser to locate a web site relevant to the course download and read a document from the web submit and post information using a web based form locate and read comments and annotations inserted inside an electronic document
  • Outcomes of the treasure hunt
The result of the exercise was that rather than tying up the student lab with 200 students for a couple of hours we were able to identify students that were having trouble with these basic tasks and focus our resources in a smaller workshop for them. Students were introduced to the key tools that they were going to need to use during the course and we had a record of who had completed the tasks required.

Classroom Management for Technology WebQuest for Preservice Teachers Introduction: Knowing how to use a computer does not guarantee that teachers will integrate technology into their teaching. There are many factors that affect the likelihood that a teacher will effectively integrate technology. One of the major factors is the issue of classroom management. What will you do if you have access to only one computer? What if you have access to only a few computers? In this WebQuest you will decide what you think are the most useful classroom management strategies for managing classroom technology. Task: Create a Treasure Hunt to help your peers learn about the most important classroom management strategies when using technology. Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion Process:

All Articles About the Author Questions and Answers Building a Web Assignment
by Prof. Jim Lengel, Boston University College of Communication
Many teachers ponder how they can better take advantage of the learning opportunities offered by the World Wide Web. Their classrooms connected, their students astute Internet surfers, their community expecting great things, they are looking for ways to get online and augment what they are already doing in the classroom. One good idea comes from the pioneer teachers who have developed what I call web assignments, and what others call webquests. This week's article suggests ways for building a simple web assignment, as a way to bring some Web life to the classroom, and prepares you to develop a more complex webquest later on. What is a Web Assignment? It's one that sends students out on the Internet to gather information and answer questions pertinent to the subject under study. You can find some good examples of these kinds of assignments at http://webquest.sdsu.edu

Since this list is now so long, it is often helpful to use the FIND feature on your browser, (under the EDIT Menu on your browser). In many cases you'll do just as well with one of the many Internet search engines such as Google.com "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,

    Nutrition Book Hunt
This game by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in Teaching K-8 Magazine
This game can be done at several levels. This first level is simple completion of the sheet according to the directions below. A slightly higher level is to construct balanced meals using only the ingredients in the books. Still higher would be to research the nutritional value of each item. Directions: Find a picture book or novel (not a non-fictional book) in which each of these foods is listed in the title or is a main focus of the book. List the author and the title in the blanks provided.
