Usability Attitudes
Then and Now
Digital Web: What surprised you while doing recent studies on Web site usability? Dr. Jakob Nielsen: Probably the most surprising recent finding came in our study of the usability of Web-based applications in Flash. Even though the Flash designs themselves had plenty of usability issues and could be improved in many ways, the single biggest factor in the study turned out to be the integration between the application and the hosting Web site. More of a third of the test users never even made it into the applications because of the bad way many of them were linked with the main workflow of the Web site. This means that a company that has invested in developing a Flash application can increase its return on investment by about 50% without any changes to the Flash: all they need to do is make better links. Digital Web: What are the common problems of today? What past common problems have become scarce today?

[c] In February we held a focus group with students to investigate their views on web publishing and blogging. The students were split into two groups, one focusing on academic uses of web publishing and the other group looking at recreational uses of web publishing. In the first group, the students were given a list of "reasons for publishing academic related entries" and asked to assess which they thought were a good idea, and which they would do. They were also asked to consider who should be able to access them and comment on them. The results are shown in the following image: In the second group, the students were given a list of "reasons for publishing recreational related entries" and asked to assess them in the same way: The students in both groups were then given a list of "types or formats of entry" and asked to assess them:

In planning its own Web site, CAST researchers wrestled with the idea of how to make the entire Web more universally designed, i.e., more accessible and useful to all people, including those with disabilities. CAST examined existing Web accessibility guidelines, recognized the improbability of Web developers sitting down and reading a handbook of guidelines, and wanted to create an online tool Web designers could use to easily implement those guidelines."

User Experience Guidelines
Assuring the Quality Web Experience Usability should be of top importance for producers of the Dartmouth Web experience. To be usable, the Web experience must be comprised of consistent, dependable, and accessible elements, such as architecture, layout, navigation, and appearance. When successfully implemented, the interface becomes second nature, and users can easily find the information they're seeking. When some parts of the experience are consistent, but other parts aren't, the user may experience the Web site as broken. For that reason, Web Publishing Services provides, for its clients, a content management system that delivers a consistent Web experience, based on usability studies, navigational best practices, editorial standards, and graphics designed by the Office of Public Affairs. Elements of that system, such as graphical files, are not made available for use outside the system to prevent user experience problems. For example, few vendors provide a level of quality that is consistent with Dartmouth's Web experience. It is better, therefore, for there to be a clear distinction when moving to that external environment, rather than dashed expectations of consistency.
