Course Synopsis Assessment Lecture Notes Practical Handouts ... Student Projects
Course Synopsis
This course introduces students to the basic concepts of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and associated systems for the delivery of information via the Internet. Topics include the syntax of HTML markup, cascading stylesheets, manipulation of images, site structuring, visual design, user interaction, and the accessibility of information.
By the end of the course students will have an understanding of how content can be repurposed as Web documents. They will be able to create valid HTML documents and apply appropriate styling, and deliver documents over the Web. They will also be able to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of website design and implementation, especially asregards usability and accessibility for different audiences.
Assessment
This module is assessed by coursework only, giving 10 credits. The coursework consists of two parts: a web resource, and an associated essay which gives a commentary on the design and implementation of the web resource. A full specification on what is required for the assessment is available here (MS Word, 29KB). Students will also be expected to have completed all of the practical sessions.

      Web publishing templates
The University of Melbourne has released a suite of web publishing templates for use on the University website and it's associated subsites. The templates and templates strategy were endorsed by the Information Strategy Committee (ISC) in 2004 following recommendations by the Web Advisory Group (WAG). Using the new templates in the publication of websites will:
      • support University branding ensure a consistent look and feel across all University webpages allow webpages to meet best practice usability and accessibility standards include the mandatory standards prescribed in web publishing policy improve site management and maintenance
ISC endorsed the recommendation that implementation of the new templates and associated web policies be compulsory for all University webpages (but noting that this does not include subject and course content pages). Consequently, organisational units should comply with the new templates and associated policies when they next undertake a redevelopment of their site. It is expected that this may occur within a 12-month period. The Web Centre has expertise and resources to support and provide advice regarding your unit's migration to the new templates.

Most Men Buy Apparel At Traditional Retail Stores
Thursday, August 18, 2005 You would think with all the tech-driven devices guys swarm to—the new Playstation Portable, pod-casting and plasma TVs—they would be all over Internet apparel shopping. But, as it turns out, they'?re still creatures of habit when it comes to purchasing clothes. Via Cotton Inc. Now, why am I not suprised by this shocking revelation? Our computer displays have not progressed to such levels that they can display intricate design and tricky colors flawlessly. Also, a good percentage of people buy clothes after they try them on. Now, I don't have the numbers on how many do that; maybe it is a good idea for someone to make a study? That leaves us with standard sizes and color-safe items like t-shirts, caps etc. We already sell them online; the Google t-shirt, the Linux cap. It will be a long time before people start buying clothes online. I mean real apparel. That said, apparel companies can leverage the power of the web to tap into loyalty programs, branding and so on. I am discussing B2C here. But B2B business is another thing. Any idea how many of these apparel companies transact online with their suppliers?

B EN S HNEIDERMAN ... ben@cs.umd.edu Gradually I began to feel that we were growing something almost organic in a new kind of reality, in cyberspace, growing it out of information . . . a pulsing tree of data that I loved to climb around in, scanning for new growth. email rjohnson@regional.org.au web site http://www.regional.org.au/ Abstract This paper describes a project to make available, via the Internet, the complete proceedings of The Australian Society of Agronomy. As part of a larger collection of agricultural research at regional, national and international scales the papers will provide a valuable educational resource for the wider agricultural community. The project addresses the political and technical issues associated with making agricultural research information that is, or ought to be, in the public domain available via the Internet for free.
    Introduction
The first known treatise on agriculture (De Re Rustica) was written by a Roman soldier and farmer, Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella, in the first century A.D. The original Latin text is on the Internet The first agronomy conference was held in 1980, the same year that IBM introduced the personal computer. In the past 20 years, advances in agricultural research have been rapid. Yet apart from the existence of various decision support systems, abstract databases and electronic journals, the computerisation of agricultural research information is poorly developed. The standardisation and computerisation of Australian law, by contrast, began in 1977 with the full text now freely available via the Internet The primary output from agricultural research is improved production. The information derived from the research is a by-product for which there is no collective responsibility. As a result, the output from a generation of agricultural researchers has been dissipated through numerous industry or discipline based extension pathways, causing extreme fragmentation of the knowledge base.
