Usability
Understanding Web Usability improves Web sites and other computer-based applications developed for the Wesleyan community. The resources you will find at this site are available for the entire Wesleyan community.
Faculty developing course resources
Many faculty, while experienced in teaching, are often quite inexperienced in Web development. Our intent is to help with the translation of pedagogical goals into Web sites that take advantage of the state of the practice in both Web and instructional design.
Academic and administrative departments
Most departments have some Web presence on the Wesleyan Web server that they would like to improve. In conjunction with the departmental Web initiative we can provide help in improving these sites.
Application developers
While the application development process at Wesleyan provides ample opportunity for interaction between the client and the developer, two problems often arise in this process: one, the client isn't that interested in providing good feedback and two, the client and the intended user of the application are often not one and the same.

Web Publishing
The invention of the World Wide Web has allowed an extraordinary amount of information to be within the reach of anyone with a PC and a modem. Persons with visual and other disabilities are able to use the Web; however important information may be lost to them when web developers fail to incorporate some simple web publishing techniques. Designers may overlook these issues because they are unaware of changes that can be made to improve the accessibility of their site. For additional information about creating accessible web pages and the related issues, please checkout the Web Development Tools section on Web Accessibility It is the responsibility of web publishers to familiarize themselves with web accessibility issues and learn the techniques that will make their pages accessible to users with disabilities. This document will explain the ways users with disabilities get information from the Web. It will also explain how you can make your website accessible for those users.
Screen Readers and Speech Synthesizers
In order for visually impaired users to get information from a website, they must rely on a screen reader and speech synthesizer. Instead of the users reading the screen, the screen is read to them. The screen reader scans the page picking up text while the speech synthesizer creates a voice that is heard through the computer's speakers.

Colors for this Year
Here is an interesting resource to check out the "hot" colors for this year. Many people think fashion is arbitrary or even silly. And yet there is a certain rationality to style. Imagine that once in a while some artist or designer does a fabulous job employing a certain color and it expands the appreciation for that color, expands the imagination of other artists and designers for that color and they begin to use it as well in their works. The end result is that certain colors are going to seem new and fresh and others will be "last year's" color. Fashion, it can be argued, is actually rooted in excellence.

Suggested website reviews schedule
There are several aspects of a website that should be reviewed regularly. Following are suggestions for consideration in reviewing sites hosted on the Deakin domain, based loosely around the academic calendar.
Strategies:
Schedule reviews to meet needs:
Its a good idea to schedule reviews for completion immediately prior to times of increased site utilisation: for example, the "Change of preferences" website should be reviewed in November if the change of preference period commences in December. Record keeping and recommendations: :
Keep a record of any changes that are/should be made. This may prove a valuable resource during future reviews. Share any recommendations that develop out of your reviews with others in your area. Seek assistance with implementing the recommended changes if the required changes are extensive.

Web Content Management is Not Data Management
By Gerry McGovern Originally published: May 23, 2005 There are two almost polar opposite views of content within many organizations. The classic IT view comes from a data management perspective. It sees content as a commodity that needs to be cost effectively stored and distributed. Show a data manager a headline and they see 60 characters. Your organization likely produces a large quantity of data/content. It is essential that there is a strategy to manage this data; to put it in some sort of archive so that it can be retrieved in the future if it might be needed. Because there is so much data produced it overwhelms attempts at creating a cohesive information architecture for the intranet. The content publication process is usually rushed, and rarely does the content have quality metadata. Thus, the search delivers poor results and the navigation is a mess. Staff tire of wasting their time and lose trust in the intranet.

This includes 138 hours of required courses and 36 hours of electives. Students should allow for 6 months to 1 year to complete this program. In addition to class time, students should expect to spend at least six hours per week completing homework assignments. Course marks will be based on homework assignments, class participation and the final presentation of course work. Students entering the program are not expected to have any prior web training or programming experience.
