This article discusses how a web design curriculum can have a far-reaching impact on the lives of students. In addition to describing the web design program at Congress Middle School of Math, Science, and Technology (in Boynton Beach, Florida) and providing downloadable examples of an online project and lesson plan, we offer an outline of the larger, student-centered benefits of this program. Brianna is a bright young woman who loves art and drawing. Her home does not have a computer and her exposure to the Internet has been limited to school research projects. Nonetheless, she's fascinated by the web and all that it offers. Kevin comes from a very different background. He's been using a computer at home for many years. Although he's only 12 years old, he has studied JavaScript and HTML to build his own web pages.

How can I use WebCT to Support Teaching and Learning in Economics?
Up: Home Showcase Guglielmo Volpe , University of North London, g.volpe@unl.ac.uk
Background
WebCT is a software product that provides an integrated approach to the design and delivery of Web based modules/courses. In simplistic terms WebCT could be regarded as a 'black box' containing a set of 'tools' that lecturers can arrange and use to design an electronic version of their modules and to enhance the learning experience of students. It is open-ended software that can be customised for the delivery of courses in any subject. For example, the University of North London (UNL) has adopted it as the main course management system and it is widely used by lecturers in various subjects such as law, chemistry, psychology and marketing. Some of the tools available in WebCT include:
  • Student management: access to and use of the Web site can be monitored by the course tutor
  • Bulletin and chat-room: students can interact publicly or privately with other students and the teaching team

    Web Site Design
Design the act of working out the form of something; an arrangement scheme; a decorative or artistic work; the creation of something in the mind "You can design for all of the people some of the time. You can design for some of the people all of the time. But you can't design for all of the people all of the time." (William Hudson with apologies to Abraham Lincoln) Many elements go into successful Web site design; we can cluster those elements into sensory, conceptual, and reactive aspects. That is, design isn't only what you see, it's also what you think and feel as you navigate a Web site.

Creating Meaningful Web Pages: A Project-Based Course
Amy Kayser (United Arab Emirates) Many researchers and ELT practitioners have noted the value of project work in English language teaching. Characterized by student collaboration on concrete outcomes, project work has a number of benefits including purposeful language use and increased student involvement and responsibility (Sheppard and Stoller 1995). Project work can also add extra motivation for students because it offers them the opportunity to use their language skills in a new and challenging way (Fried-Booth 1986). Educational technology, which is increasingly being used in ELT programs around the world, has immense potential for enhancing project work. Project-based computer assisted language learning (PBCALL) can be a powerful tool for language teachers because it combines the benefits of project work with new technologies. This article describes a course that was designed to train students in Web design and guide them in the production of an electronic project. It also addresses some of the benefits and difficulties of teaching such a course.
    Project work and PBCALL
In PBCALL, students use technology to create meaningful projects that can be shared with worldwide audiences (Debski and Gruba 1999). For example, students from a variety of locales might produce Web pages by collaborating with other students electronically. Like traditional project work, PBCALL gives students more responsibility and control of their learning because they are able to select, plan, and create a project of their own choice (Fried-Booth 1986).

Whether it is derived from whim or from serious research, a model offers its user a means of comprehending an otherwise incomprehensible problem. An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem, enabling the would-be designer to negotiate her design task with a semblance of conscious understanding. Models help us to visualize the problem, to break it down into discrete, manageable units. The value of a specific model is determined within the context of use. Like any other instrument, a model assumes a specific intention of its user. A model should be judged by how it mediates the designer's intention, how well it can share a work load, and how effectively it shifts focus away from itself toward the object of the design activity. -Martin Ryder

In casino craps, the players place their bets and the casino bank "covers" them. In addition to covering every player's bet, the casino-banked craps game offers many other types of proposition bets. These bets, along with the basic "pass" and "don't pass" bets, will be explained.
There are four people actively running the game. The boxman, who sits behind the middle of the table, is the boss. He keeps a constant watch over the game. The two dealers on each side of him pay off the winners and "rake" in the losers' chips. Each dealer handles all the players on his side. The table is divided by the center box of proposition bets and also by the stickman, who stands on the players' side of the table.

What made us human? The story of our past can be found in clues from a wide range of sources everything from details of DNA to evocative murals in Ice Age caves. This is why the scientific quest for human origins requires the curiosity of a philosopher coupled with the skills of a skeptical detective. This course will introduce you to the study of human evolution a branch of anthropology which seeks to understand human uniqueness by studying the human past using scientific methods. We can learn alot about ourselves by studying the behavior of living primates, like chimpanzees. And we can look at fossils and archaeological sites for the evidence that reveals when and where humans first began to behave like "odd animals:" to walk upright, eat and cook unusual foods, invent tools and art, speak languages, and enjoy the wide range of social and cultural practices that we consider so "human" today. 100. Rubrics For Web Lessons
Authentic assessment, therefore, blurs the lines between teaching, learning, An oral presentation augmented by a HyperStudio stack; A web page showing
    http://edweb.sdsu.edu/webquest/rubrics/weblessons.htm
Introduction How often have you attempted to grade your students' work only to find that the assessment criteria were vague and the performance behavior was overly subjective? Would you be able to justify the assessment or grade if you had to defend it? The Rubric is an authentic assessment tool which is particularly useful in assessing criteria which are complex and subjective. Authentic assessment is geared toward assessment methods which correspond as closely as possible to real world experience. It was originally developed in the arts and apprenticeship systems, where assessment has always been based on performance. The instructor observes the student in the process of working on something real, provides feedback, monitors the student's use of the feedback, and adjusts instruction and evaluation accordingly. Authentic assessment takes this principle of evaluating real work into all areas of the curriculum. The rubric is one authentic assessment tool which is designed to simulate real life activity where students are engaged in solving real-life problems. It is a formative type of assessment because it becomes an ongoing part of the whole teaching and learning process. Students themselves are involved in the assessment process through both peer and self-assessment. As students become familiar with rubrics, they can assist in the rubric design process. This involvement empowers the students and as a result, their learning becomes more focused and self-directed.
