    Why?
You don't have to learn HTML to design web pages. You can use any number of wsiwyg editors or adapt other people's materials, but the more you learn about how it works, the more versatile you can be as a practitioner. And to the degree your materials are web-based, they become more portable and accessible to you and other users not only in your workplace but throughout the world. University of Indiana - Purdue University, Indianapolis Introduction "What's most important in school? Working with good teachers who can convey method as well as content. Except to the extent that students are involved with a caring teacher, schooling is limited to teaching facts and techniques. In this sense, network access is irrelevant to schooling-it can only prevent this type of interaction." This cautionary remark from computer guru Clifford Stoll should ever be in the minds of teachers and administrators. The discussion that follows is based, thus, on the following premises: first, there is no substitute for an engaged, caring teacher desirous of teaching, in our case, German language and culture. Second, the reader belongs to that esteemed group. A third premise that must be in fact addressed is that German Americana is a useful way to both engage students' interest in German and serve as a vehicle for linguistic development and cultural knowledge. This issue of UP in itself is evidence that a significant number of teachers agree to or are at least curious about premise three.

    SITE DESIGN
In architecture as in all other operative arts, the end must direct the operation. The end is to build well. Well building hath three conditions. Commodity, firmness, and delight.
The Elements of Architecture THE DESIGN OF THE SITE will determine its organizational framework. At this stage you will make the tactical design decisions about what your audience wants from you, what you wish to say, and how to arrange the content to best meet your audience's needs. Although people will notice the graphic design of your Web pages right away, the overall organization of the site will have the greatest impact on their experience. The fundamental organizing principle in Web site design is meeting users' needs. Ask yourself what your audience wants, and center your site design on their needs. Many organizations and businesses make the mistake of using their Web sites primarily to describe their administrative organization, and only secondarily do they offer the services, products, and information the average user is seeking. Most readers won't care how your company or department is organized and will be put off if such inside information is all your site appears to offer. Talk to the people who make up your target audience, put yourself in their shoes, and make the items and services they want the most prominent items on the home page.

to Web teaching guide Quite simply, these two books ought to be on the desk of any teacher who has an interest in using the Web for teaching and, in the case of the style guide, on the desk of anyone who is contemplating the design of a Web site. Even those with plenty of experience in the field will find things of interest. The Yale Web Style Guide was probably one of the first sites to be used by the amateur Web designers who sprang up a few years ago (in fact, more or less at the same time as Information Research began to be published). I certainly used it a great deal (although the journal may not meet all of Lynch and Horton's desiderata!) and arranged its download to the Departmental server for easier use by students. The Style Guide is sub-titled, "Basic design principles for creating Web sites" and this is exactly what it delivers. A glimpse at Lynch's Web site shows that he is well-suited to deliver design principles: he is Director of Biomedical Communications, a medical illustrator and painter. Horton worked with Lynch at Yale before moving to Dartmouth College, where she has been mainly concerned with developing teaching sites.

Workshops are small sessions administered by the Tech Guides or Interns that provide individuals with a chance to acquire computer skills in a specific area that the workshop is geared towards. By providing these workshops, we hope to equip the students of the College of Education with the technological skills necessary to work and teach in the 21st century. We realize that not everyone feels at ease in front of a computer, and therefore adapt the workshops to the needs of those attending. If you have a group of 8 or more and would like to set up a workshop, please send an e-mail the Tech Guides at otat@msu.edu

Teaching Web Composition: Logistics and Design Selected Links HTML prewriting Web Pages for Absolute Beginners The Cern Guide Before teaching the nuts and bolts of HTML composition, you may want to check our HTML prewriting information . We have found that the actual skills of composing with HTML come fairly quickly to students, so rather than explicating commands, this page focuses more on teaching strategies. It offers advice about file management, presents models for potential assignments and provides information about Web style and design. File Management For the HTML author, getting comfortable saving files with the proper names and formats is an important first step. But before you can demonstrate the appropriate formats and the best way to handle the Web files, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the logistics of your own system. Generally, Web files will be distributed by UNIX based servers. These servers demand that file names be written with all lower case characters and that they contain no spaces or nonstandard symbols. We recommend that students use lower-case characters and simple conventions. Whatever the demands of your system, establishing standards for file naming and management and drilling students about them will save a number of headaches in the long run. Once students are clear on how to handle their files make sure they know how to display their work in a browser window and that they get comfortable switching between composition and view mode. Each step along the way provides an opportunity for students to see their work in progress. As students test their work in a browser, prompt them to articulate their goals at any given stage of the composition process and to assess how well their work is fulfilling them. It is also important that you build a draft and revision stage into your HTML assignments. Students should draft their projects and include a "mailto" option on their pages so that you and peers can offer feedback about the projects.

    • Demographic profiles of computer owners or net surfers
    • How many web pages there are
Or other related questions. For answers, you might try Media Metrix or DoubleClick . I also can't tell you how many ophthamologists there are in Montana, or how many people visited Disneyland in 1997, or what the most popular brand of fish sticks is. For those, try LEXIS-NEXIS or DIALOG . Also see Paula Berenstein's nice book, Finding Statistics Online , which deals with such questions much better than I could.

Design the act of working out the form of something; an arrangement scheme; a decorative or artistic work; the creation of something in the mind "You can design for all of the people some of the time. You can design for some of the people all of the time. But you can't design for all of the people all of the time." (William Hudson with apologies to Abraham Lincoln) Many elements go into successful Web site design; we can cluster those elements into sensory, conceptual, and reactive aspects. That is, design isn't only what you see, it's also what you think and feel as you navigate a Web site.
