Elements of Web Page Design
Teaching Guide
Module Home Intro Rationale Content Ideas ... Task 2 Aim: The purpose of this module is to help teachers become familiar with different types of web pages and to help them to decide what kind of web page will suit their needs. Examples of quality web sites will be presented and they will select options for their web page once they have decided on a style. They may design their own page using suggested design principles, or may use the provided templates. At the end of this module, participants will email their mentor with the type of web page they plan to create. Rationale: Creating and using web pages are vital skills for teaching professionals in the twenty-first century. Technology is playing a major part in efforts to improve education, and by creating and using web pages, teachers can engage their students in new and meaningful ways. The Internet is a gateway to new educational opportunities; by developing thoughtful, well planned pages, teachers can provide a customized portal in which members of their school communities can navigate through information and learning opportunities. Specifically, web pages can facilitate student learning, teacher productivity, and parental communication in a number of ways including the following. Web pages can:

46. Web Teaching Articles: Choosing A Web Authoring Tool
As the tools for web page design become more sophisticated, knowledge of HTML is page information. From web Teaching Guide Copyright 2000 Sarah Horton

Choosing a Web authoring tool
Selecting a software package is easy for some tasks. For example, standard tools have emerged as superior for editing a photograph or writing a book. By contrast, because the Web is relatively new, the choice is far from clear: there is no preeminent tool for Web site authoring. Complicating the decision is that you can approach a Web project in many ways. You can create your pages the old-fashioned way, writing your content and the HTML code that renders the page in the browser by hand using a basic text editor. You can use Web page design software, designing the pages and adding content, but letting the software generate the HTML. This second approach resembles working with page layout software, in which you position text and images and never need to look at the programming code that generates the printed page. Or, instead of creating your own Web pages, you can use a courseware system, which is a combination of tools designed specifically to deliver online instruction. First find out what tools and options are available at your institution. Although it is important to choose software that suits you, choose whenever possible from those that your institution uses and will support for the foreseeable future. If you are collaborating on a project, try to select a tool that works for everyone involved.

Teaching Styles and Instructional Uses of the World Wide Web
To say that teachers approach their classrooms differently is no great insight. However, to recognize that this approach profoundly affects the design of a web-based course is crucial to developing effective instructional materials. A web site may replicate a text book or become a working site for problem-based instruction. A teacher who clearly understands the possibilities and limits of his or her teaching style can make more consistent judgments about how best to use this medium. Below, you will find some suggestions based on the work of Anthony Grasha, professor of psychology at the University of Cincinnati, whose book Teaching with Style (Pittsburgh, PA: Alliance Publishers, 1996) describes how an understanding of teaching styles and learning styles can help faculty enhance their teaching. This page contains several links for faculty that use Grasha's categories in planning their distance education courses that have been developed by the CTL. You can connect to:

As more and more teachers and students develop and publish their own online documents, especially web pages, it's a good idea now and then to remind ourselves of some tried-and-true principles that can lead to more useful and easy to read publications. Even though new software tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash make it easy for the novice to develop a fancy web site quickly and easily, these programs do not prevent you from violating the guidelines for good web page design. Here are some principles to consider. Display Size Design for the display size and aspect ratio of your user's web page display. A computer screen, for instance, is wider than it is tall, while a Palm is taller than it is wide. Let your design fit the shape that most of your users will see. Understand the size restraints of your user's web page display. Make sure that key content, especially navigation information, appears within the view of a user with the smallest likely display. Locating Functions Place key functions of the web page, especially titles and navigation, where they are most evident and expected. If you want a certain item or message to be noticed by the user, put it near the top, or in a place with few other items competing for attention.

Grade Level - 6-8 Lesson Plan - Designing Web Pages
Northeast Middle School DESCRIPTION: GOAL: OBJECTIVES: Students will use the Web Page Wizard to design their own web page.
Students will format the look of their page with bullets, text color, background pattern and color, and horizontal images. Students will insert at least 3 hypertext links onto the web page. Students will save the page under a filename they choose. Students will edit their web page to continue to add details and improve design. Students will learn to insert images from remote web sites. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In a world of ever changing technology, the hottest innovation is designing web pages. This is a skill that can be used as a career, to enhance a career, to learn to express individual interests and hobbies, and to enhance learning by making "topical" web pages for class assignments. This will give my students another edge to their future. PROCEDURE: 1. Introduce the concepts to be taught.
