    Introduction
Hi, I'm Joe Gillespie and I am a graphic designer working in London UK.
The purpose of my Web Page Design for Designers site is not to teach people how to produce web pages. There is little mention of HTML or any other technical stuff except where necessary.
It is assumed that the reader already has a grasp of HTML programming, or has made the decision to use a WYSIWYG Web page editor.
It is aimed at people who are already involved with design and typography for conventional print and want to explore the possibilities of this new electronic medium.
They are probably already using page layout tools like QuarkXPress, Photoshop, Freehand and Illustrator and have discovered that designing web pages is something quite different.
When I started this site in August 1996, it was with the intention of helping other graphic designers make the transition from print to web design as I did.
At that time, I had no idea that it would become so popular with such a broad base of readers. In the first year, WPDFD had almost a quarter of a million visits and is now recommended or required reading in many colleges, universities, government departments and businesses throughout the world.
Needless to say, I get an enormous amount of email on the subject, some which I can answer and some which I can't, due to lack of time, or because I just don't have the answer.

Written with my usual unusual sense of humor, this book is not dry like most teaching texts. With a minimum of technobabble and plenty of full color graphics, interspersed with unexpected punch lines, you will find learning really can be fun. Don't let the humorous aspect fool you though, this is a serious teaching text. The first edition was very popular, needing 3 separate printings to keep up with demand. Early indications are that this edition will be even more popular. Unsolicited User Comment

    Introduction and Executive Summary
Teachers at all levels, from preschool to K-12 to university programs to adult and continuing education, now deal with a remarkably diverse student population. Growing numbers of students have such disabilities as attention deficits or learning disabilities. Many older students have impairments of hearing and of vision. Large numbers of students come from cultural traditions other than the Euro-American, Judeo-Christian Western "white" culture and for this reason bring different expectations to the classroom. Chapter 1 explores the characteristics of these non-traditional students. Meeting all of the tremendous variety of needs these students present is not something most teachers can do. What is possible is to design and deliver instruction that responds to most of these needs. That is what this book is about.

The Power of Persuasive Writing is a three week communication skills and interdisciplinary middle school Internet project. This project has been designed for a sixth grade English class, but it can be adapted and used as a project in any upper elementary, middle school, or high school class. The flexibility of this project should allow teachers to focus on certain issues. This can shorten or lengthen the scope and sequence of the lesson(s). It's not your imagination...it's the real thing! A fun and motivating process to teach writing and emphasize reading to your students. This project invites you and your students to sift through persuasive documents, scan advertisements, and browse newspaper articles and editorials. You are offered an opportunity to understand how persuasion techniques in media is a part of your daily life. Together, teacher and students, will work together to arm themselves with critical reading skills and a talent for identifying persuasion tactics so that we might strengthen our thinking skills and avoid pitfalls of letting others manipulate our thinking.

EASI has created 3 separate but interconnected programs specifically designed to support institutions making their computer and information technology systems accessible to employees, students, staff and instructors with disabilities. Besides the Certificate program, EASI provides monthly 60-minute live Web conferences on current technology and an annual institutional membership with special networking and support features. EASI is partnering with the University of Southern Maine to provide this certificate in accessible information technology delivered entirely online at any time from any where. No need for expensive travel or no need to take time away from work or use a precious vacation. The 9 individual courses listed below can be taken individually for 3 continuing education units each or a package of five courses will earn the certificate in Accessible Information Technology. This provides the solid foundation of current disability-related legislation and of accessible information technology to enable an institution to design and maintain a barrier-free information and computer technology system.

    Teach Yourself HTM Programming
Hi there! This page is for the many of you who have learned everything they know on Microsoft PCs. You probably browse the Web (well, you found this page, didn't you?) but wonder what it takes to make your own Web pages. Well, to do this, you need to learn HTM, and it's not that hard! If you're an expert HTM programmer, most of this page will be review, sorry. But there are some good tips on how to encourage your visitors to use IE. HyperText Markup (HTM) is the lingua franca of the Web - it tells your browser what a Web page contains and how to display it. HTM is pretty primitive; there's not much control over layout and the fonts look pretty bad. If the people who set up the Web had thought to use Microsoft's Rich Text Format, we'd all be better off... but we've got to work with what's there. Most of the Web pages you see are just text files, with the special HTM extension. For example, a guestbook page would be called GUESTBOO.HTM. A good name for the Declaration of Independence on-line would be DECOFIND.HTM. You get the idea.
    Tools you'll need
You'll need the following things before you start:

Published: Sams.net Publishing You know, being a systems manager can be a pretty tough racket. I run around all day, supporting applications, doing backups, figuring out budgets, dealing with users, etc., etc., and so on. One of my many duties in recent years has been to create a website for the department that I work for (so long ago it was actually written using HTML 1.0). Unfortunately, our website has become a "cobweb site" that just sits there and is hardly updated, mainly because I'm a busy guy and nobody wants to deal with the maintenance (hey, I work for a university, don't even think about the words, "Hire a webmaster."). Lately (not to boast), I've managed to get things pretty well organized, and I've decided to revamp our siteyou know, change the look, reorganize the content, that sort of thingonly it's been a while and I'm not up on my HTML. I checked out Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours by Dick Oliver and Molly Holzschlag, who have both authored many books on HTML and Web design (though not together). Rather than taking the approach of just saying, "Here's how HTML 4 is different than HTML 3" (which I honestly couldn't tell you), Dick and Molly take the view that you've never set your eyes upon any HTML at all.

Tor: An anonymous Internet communication system
Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features. Your traffic is safer when you use Tor, because communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers, called onion routers . Instead of taking a direct route from source to destination, data packets on the Tor network take a random pathway through several servers that cover your tracks so no observer at any single point can tell where the data came from or where it's going. This makes it hard for recipients, observers, and even the onion routers themselves to figure out who and where you are. Tor's technology aims to provide Internet users with protection against "traffic analysis," a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Traffic analysis is used every day by companies, governments, and individuals that want to keep track of where people and organizations go and what they do on the Internet. Instead of looking at the content of your communications, traffic analysis tracks where your data goes and when, as well as how much is sent. For example, online advertising companies like Fastclick and Doubleclick use traffic analysis to record what web pages you've visited, and can build a profile of your interests from that. A pharmaceutical company could use traffic analysis to monitor when the research wing of a competitor visits its website, and track what pages or products that interest the competitor. IBM hosts a searchable patent index, and it could keep a list of every query your company makes. A stalker could use traffic analysis to learn whether you're in a certain Internet cafe.
