Buy Going Wild
Foul Is Fair
Hot to get good photos in bad weather By Robert Winkler n his 1973 tune "Kodachrome," Paul Simon sang about the color slide film that "makes you think all the world's a sunny day." Looking at our own photographs, we might be led to the same conclusion. How many pictures have you taken in bad weather? Not surprisingly, bad-weather shots are nearly absent from the repertoires of most amateur photographers. The condition is particularly acute, though understandable, among those of us who travel. No one likes to admit to a rained-out trip, let alone return with tangible evidence of it. No one likes to travel a great distance to go out in the rain, much less go out in the rain to take pictures.
For the dedicated photographer, however, there comes a time to go beyond sunny-day pictures and show that the world can be beautiful even when the weather is not. So first, an exploration of what foul-weather photography has to offer; then, advice on how to do it simply and without risking damage to your equipment.

How Should I Handle My Camera in Cold Weather?
'Tis the season, and we're getting lots of letters from NYI students and other Northern Hemisphere Web visitors about taking photos in cold weather. There are lots of great photo opportunities out there whether your idea of a good time is ice fishing, snow shoeing or just plain walking in the winter wonderland. You just need to get out there and take the proper steps.
The letters we get reveal that the proper steps to protect your camera are often confused in people's minds. Here's an e-mail we got recently from a photographer in Ontario, Canada, that is typical: "I am happily snapping away, but having a bit of a problem keeping my camera warm and unfrozen in our cold, blustery weather. If I carry it bundled under my coat, should I keep it in a plastic bag (I read about this somewhere) to prevent condensation? Any suggestions?"
Okay. You asked. Here are the facts and the answers to all the basic camera tips regarding cold weather.
The problem with lots of tips about cold weather photography is that they get out of sequence. Here's why. There are really three different scenarios to consider: First, what to do when you take your camera from a warm, cozy home or car into the bitter cold outside. Second, what to do when you're shooting pictures outside in the cold. Third, what to do when you finally bring your freezing camera back into that warm cozy house or car.

NYI Student Profile: Jim Edds
NYI Graduate Jim Edds has a love for adventure and he's been able to combine it with his passion for photography quite successfully. The result is a career that has taken him on a breathless journey from the depths of the ocean to the eye of the major storm.literally. Jim spent years working as a successful underwater photographer whose images were published in over thirty magazines. Today, Jim makes his living as a storm chaser, videotaping hurricanes and other extreme weather as a stringer for The Weather Channel and other television stations.
Jim was already shooting underwater pictures when he decided to take the NYI Course. At the time, his photographic success was limited to selling the occasional slide of the Florida Keys or Pensacola Beach to a postcard company. But Jim likes to keep his options open and the fact that the NYI's Complete Course in Professional Photography encompassed many different areas of photography appealed to him. He wanted to hone his skills, find some direction and become a well-rounded photographer who "could pick and choose my particular photographic area of interest." After all, says Jim, "Who knows where you'll be in 2 years, 5 years or 10 years. If I want to set up a portrait studio in a few years, I'll know how to do that."
Jim remembers that he found the NYI Course great at explaining difficult material to him. Even today, when much of his career is no longer in still photography, Jim says that whether he is shooting photographs or video, "the same compositional techniques I learned in the NYI Course apply. No doubt about it, a good camera background will help you shoot good video."

Cold weather photography
on: I am off to Norway in 3 weeks time, with a group of photographers hoping to catch the Aurora again, our first night is staying at the ice hotel in Alta, where room temperatures are between -4 and -7C, does anyone have any suggestions as to how the 20D will be affected, and what the best way of keeping the camera, batteries etc warm. When we went to Norway last November the temperature was not an issue as it was unseasonably mild, mostly above freezing, and managed to capture the lights on 4/5 nights. Logged santa Member Offline Posts: 228 Re: Cold weather photography Reply #1 on: the only affect on the camera will be....cold. No big thing. I shoot all night with mine at -30F. Nothing much to worry about. If your batteries are charged there is similarly nothing to worry about. You might put them in bed with you
