Lightning strikes can kill people, knock out radio communications, electrical power, destroy houses or trees. When a person is struck by lightning the chances are about 50% that it will be fatal. Usually, the lightning enters the head or one of the ears. Contrary to what one might think, lightning usually strikes out of the body skin again after a few centimeters, because it is a highly transient electrical current, and these flow mostly at the surface of conducting material (like flesh). However, a person usually suffers cardiac arrest, apart from burns, temporary blindness and deafness. A strike can have profound effects on someone's life, if the person survives. In many cases neurons are permanently damaged.
When a house is hit by lightning, the electrical current will find its way down by anything conductive, preferably around the perimeter of the house. This may include antennas, plumbing and gutters. Any person taking a bath, making phonecall, washing hands, or otherwise touching metal plumbing either directly or indirectly, may be shocked or killed. Electrical appliances are likely to be damaged or destroyed, either by large peak currents or by the electromagnetic shock wave.

SEVERE WEATHER PHOTOGRAPHY IN MID WALES -
WELCOME TO JOHN MASON'S WEB SITE
....dedicated to all aspects of Welsh weather but especially to storm-chasing - the art of deliberately intercepting thunderstorms, floods, tornadoes, hail, blizzards and the like, armed with a camera and a certain amount of caution!
Wales has a "tabloid" reputation for just being wet all of the time. To put it politely this is totally untrue! We have an amazingly varied climate here, from the tranquil beauty of a seascape summer sunset to the full fury of an autumn "Atlantic Bomb" cyclone.
The combination of the beautiful landscapes and dramatic things going on in the skies overhead is enough to challenge any serious photographer. These pages

30. JOHN S. MASON, MID-WALES, UK: Severe Weather Photography
Introduction to severe weather photography. I have been intercepting and photographing severe weather events for several years now.
http://www.geologywales.co.uk/tornado.htm
Storm-chasing is an activity normally associated with the Great Plains of the USA, Tornado Alley and the film Twister. But the UK in fact gets more tornadoes per square mile than the USA! They are, however, almost always weak affairs compared to the destructive storms that cut swathes through Kansas, Oklahoma and elsewhere.
I have been intercepting and photographing severe weather events for several years now. It gets you away from the desk, gives you a much better understanding of meteorology and the photographic potential is awesome! It can also get quite exciting at times.

HITS TO THIS PAGE SINCE OCT. 14, 1997. Some Local Severe Weather Photography Watching the weather to buy time and save lives! Internet services provided for free by Alachua County FreeNet Alachua County SKYWARN
Much thanks to Michael Masters and Middle Tennessee SKYWARN for allowing us the use of thier rotating SKYWARN pog graphic. This page depicts some severe weather related events that I have been able to photograph and/or video. The reason I thought to put up this page is because after taking some spotter training classes, and after browsing the web I began to realize that there really wasn't that much photographic documentation on severe storm phenomena as they occur in Florida out there especially as they occur here in Alachua County . I figured if noone else is going to do it, I might as well. Besides, I need an excuse to display these things. In the future, I hope maybe this will grow to become more of a photographic library of things severe weather related as they pertain to the area of northern Florida. As it is now, of the severe stuff photographed, it seems to quickly be becoming something of a library of things that can fool you, or of things which are as yet unknown as to what exactly they were. This will do just as well, though. For all the photos of the obviuos out there, I'd still like to see examples of things which can fool me, too. This way, I can learn.
