Historical Weather Data
WeatherBank maintains hourly and daily historical data records from every National Weather Service reporting station in the United States, as well as other locations around the world. We currently archived weather data on a real-time basis and certain updates are made hourly. This hourly archiving began in late November, 1994. We have combined this hourly database with daily records, which span the entire period of record. In some cases, we have data as far back as the mid- 1800's. We can provide you with packages of historical weather data from the last 10, 20, or 30 years, or just the last few years, whatever is required to meet your needs. Since we manage this data in real-time, we also have the flexibility of manipulating the data. Our historical data has been edited for missing and spurious data by correlating the spurious records with data from adjacent locations, and by using climatological information. This assures you that your models and software will operate flawlessly. Our historical database addresses some 20 different weather parameters, including recorded values of temperatures, precipitation, humidity, and cloud cover percentages. We can also provide many calculated variables, such as an average daily temperature, heating or cooling degree day values, or even specific and proprietary parameters unique to your company. And, our historical data can be delivered to you via Email, HTTP(browsers), FTP, XML, CD-ROM, floppy disk, and/or hard copy. We can provide the historical weather data in any format you require, including ASCII text, Microsoft® Excel and Access formats, and many other formats.

Many citizen weather stations are producing weather data today. When these data are used only by the weather station owners, data quality is not an issue. With the communications revolution and the vast capabilities of the internet, many people with weather stations are sending their data far and wide for other people to use. In that case, data quality matters. The Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) is a private-public partnership with three main goals: 1) to collect weather data contributed by citizens; 2) to make these data available for weather services and homeland security; and 3) to provide feedback to the data contributors so that they have the tools to check and improve their data quality. In fact, the web address, wxqa.com, stands for weather quality assurance. Tools that will help members improve their data quality are listed under the "Data Quality" link above left. There are over 4,500 registered CWOP members world wide and a graph of the

Weather Data Online This service has been in operation for four years with no changes, providing access to daily data for locations throughout the United States and in several locations throughout the world. Unfortunatly we have never received any funding for the development, setup or continued operation of this service. Ideally we would like to keep this service free, but there are costs associated with continued operation, maintenance and development of this service. In the absense of funding, we are asking for donations to help fund this service. Several organizations from both the government and private sectors have expressed an interest in seeing this service continue, and several individuals have also voiced their support for this service. Our hope is that there are enough organizations and individuals willing to make voluntary contributions for the use of this service so that we can continue its operation. We are asking for annual voluntary donations based on the following guidelines:
Yearly Personal Use (non-business) Donation up to 15 uses per month $20.00 16+ uses per month $50.00

T he Delta Agricultural Weather Center is located at the Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) in Stoneville, MS. The center is a joint effort between the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) and the Mississippi State University Extension Service (MSU-ES). The purpose of this center is to provide historical and up-to-date weather data and products to aid farmers in making agricultural decisions. About the Center...
On March 31, 1996, the National Weather Service located at Stoneville, Mississippi, closed its doors. Through volunteer efforts, weather data collection continued as it had since 1915 so there would be no gap in historical data. It was soon apparent there was a need for public access to weather data, particularly DD60's and DD50's. The Delta Research and Extension Center secured a Federal Extension grant to fund a basic weather project. This grant allowed the Delta Agricultural Weather Center to become fully operational in May 1998. The Center began operation with three on-farm sites recording weather information daily. Other sites were added and continue to be added throughout the entire Delta region. Contact Mark Silva

Space Weather studies the environmental dynamics of "geospace": the active (and sometimes stormy) region above the Earth's lower atmosphere including the ionosphere (which often reflects AM radio waves back to Earth) and the magnetosphere (home of the Van Allen radiation belts and the environment of many spacecraft including the numerous geosynchronous satellites used for communications and other applications.) However, with the proliferation of many great sites which present lists of weather links, I've decided to remove this section and replace it with a list of a few of these comprehensive sites from which you can obtain many others. This will let me focus on the research data portions of the FAQ which are more important and interesting to me professionally. For weather related software, see the research data section (part 3).
