We all know that bad weather can spoil a holiday or an outing, but it is, generaly, no more than a nuisance. Boating, however, presents a quite different picture. You should not even contemplate going out for a trip in your boat without having found out the likely weather conditions. It doesn't matter that you won't be far from shore, suddenly and seriously changed weather conditions can cause disaster on the water. This means that you need to have some knowledge of weather and what causes it. Barometers and air pressure Weather is caused by air travelling around areas of high or low atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is commonly called barometric pressure because we usually measure it on a barometer. Atmospheric pressure is constanly changing. Change, therefore, should beconstanly noted. The unit of measurement is now called the hectopascal although the old, familiar term milibar slips out occasionally, even from meteorologists. If there is a change downwards of more than about 7 hectopascals in the 24 hours since the previous reading then it is likely that, as a low pressure area is approaching, poor and certainly changed weather conditions can be expected. As a rule of thumb poor weather is generally associated with low pressure systems but this is not always true. Reference to weather forecasts, therefore, become essential.

WIND AND CURRENT A boat’s handling characteristics are affected by wind and current, no matter what type of hull and power combination it has. Keeping a course or maneuvering in close quarters may be straightforward on a calm day during a slack tidal current, but the boat may become quite ill-mannered when coping with a stiff crosswind or crosscurrent. Since bows on many power boats are higher than the terns, they tend to fall off the wind when backing, despite anything that is done with the helm. Hull type has the most effect on how a boat reacts to the current. Displacement-type hulls with considerable draft are affected by current to a greater extent than shallower-draft, lighter, planing-type hulls. Water is much denser than air, so a half-knot cross current may have more effect on a displacement cruiser than a stiff 15 to 20 knot wind. On the other hand, given the same conditions, a planing - type hull with a high tuna tower could be more affected by wind than by current. Neither a displacement nor planing boat can ignore the wind current. Skipper of both will find one of them a major factor affecting the boat’s maneuverability. This becomes most apparent while running at low speed in close quarters. TIDES AND SEA CONDITIONS Large ocean undulations, generated by distant storms and unrelated to local causes, are called swells. The surface of a swell may be perfectly calm, but it is usually textured by the wind into groups of tiny ripples called "catspaws". The ripples gradually build into waves.

Boating Safety
Safety Tips : Taking basic safety measures every time you go out on the water will help ensure a safe experience for everyone.
  • Make sure safety equipment, required by law, is on board, maintained in good condition, and you know how to properly use these devices. Know and practice the rules of the road. Keep an eye out for changing weather conditions and act accordingly. Maintain a clear, unobstructed view forward at all times. "Scan" the water back and forth; avoid "tunnel" vision. Most boating collisions are caused by inattention.
Rules of the Road : The inland navigational rules, commonly called the "Rules of the Road," govern the operation of boats and specify light and sound signals on inland waters in order to prevent collisions. You can download the latest edition of the navigational rules in pdf format or order a copy from the Government Printing Office by clicking here Equipment Requirements : There are federal government requirements for safety equipment on recreational boats.

Phil Leaves. Again.
A Hunter 37 left Beaufort last week, destination England. That may not strike many people as news. But here in Oriental this event was newsworthy because it’s now been almost a whole week and the boat and its captain, Phillip Hay-Jahans have not come back to NC.
We first met Phil one morning in February after overhearing his British accent while he was getting coffee at The Bean. Word had been going around Oriental that a British sailor was having a hard time getting away.
Phil Hay-Jahans
“Are you the sailor who keeps trying to leave?” Phil Hay-Jahans smiled. That was surprising. A full-face grimace would’ve been in order given the run of bad luck Phil had had since December.

HOBIE 21 WITH NO NAME
Andy Little of Chapel Hill and his friend Mike Collins arrived on the shores of Oriental on Mother's Day evening. They'd just spent three days sailing Andy’s Hobie 21 from Virginia Beach.
Their journey actually began a half-year earlier in November. Then as now, teamwork was necessary. Mike was the tactician, carefully watching a clock tick down.
But on that day last fall Andy and Mike weren’t at the starting line of a race. They weren't even on a boat. Rather, they were trying to phone in the last and highest bid in an EBay auction. The prize? A Hobie 21 being sold in Virginia Beach. They won.
Mothers Day weekend was Andy and Mike’s first chance to bring the Hobie to NC waters. They left from Virginia Beach, setting out an inlet in to the Atlantic.

One leads to another and yet another, and they all lead you through more than a thousand miles of some of the prettiest and most historical regions of the U.S. east coast. Most of this course runs very close to the Atlantic, giving opportunities to glimpse the ocean while safely inside, or to even venture outside if you wish. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] But it also takes you through swamps dating back to the Pleistocene era and forest where bear and deer swim across the channel. The experience continuously broadens as you savor wild coastal marshes, barrier islands with lonely beaches, quaint villages, thriving cities, wilderness preserves, and finally white sands and clear waters beckoning to the Caribbean.

REFUELING TIPS
Refuel with care When refuelling, take precautions. It could save someone's life … maybe yours. Make sure the engine and all electrical circuits are off. Extinguish any open flames such as pilot lights, barbeques, cigarettes, and close ports and deck hatches. Ensure everyone is ashore and no one is smoking nearby. Remember that gas fumes can build up in the bilge, so before you start the engine always turn the blower on for at least five minutes. Unless you clear the fumes, you'll be inviting an explosion or fire.
MARINE WEATHER BROADCASTS
"Radio Aids to Marine Navigation" includes information on marine weather broadcasts. The edition covering Ontario's waterways is subtitled Atlantic and Great Lakes (T51-4-E) or in French (T51-4-F).
