How The Port Works ... Glossary
Fremantle Ports has a number of boats that assist visiting vessels to enter and exit the harbour
Inner Harbour Small Craft Towage in Fremantle's Inner and Outer Harbours is provided by private operators. Tugs are small, powerful vessels used for towing or pushing ships in port. Line boats are small, powerful vessels controlled by one person. They are used to pull heavy mooring lines fastened to the line boat, from a ship to the wharf. Port Services personnel then secure the lines on bollards. The Harbour Launch Company operates line boats in Fremantle's Inner Harbour. Pilot Boats and Pilots Each year Fremantle Ports' pilot boats provide almost 4,000 pilot transfer services in all weather conditions. Fremantle Ports' Small Craft crews and the pilotage contractor, Fremantle Pilots, work together to ensure the effective and safe transfer of pilots to and from ships in Gage Roads. The nature of pilot transfers, and the environmental factors, in the water off Fremantle are challenging. However, the experience of the skippers, crews and pilots, and the quality of the vessels ensure that the transfers are performed efficiently and safely. During a pilot transfer, the skipper of the pilot boat must match the speed of the vessel being boarded.

FORGET THE PALM TREES
by Mark Richards
I was up at daybreak and into the wheelhouse. Jock, the captain, looked very bleary-eyed, and remarked that is had been one of the most difficult nights he'd ever had at sea, with the combination of the weather, tides, and dodging the sheer volume of other shipping in the lanes. His comment was that they needed traffic lights in the North Sea.
The cross from Plymouth to Guernsey was uneventful. The promos and boat visits were very popular. The only bummer was due to some security deal in the harbor we had to anchor in the bay, and all the visitors had to be ferried back and forth in a rubber ducky. There were some interesting moments getting people on and off the boat with it rising in the swell.

The building has a plank floor with a diagram of the Coos Bay waterways cut-out of the flooring (bottom right photo). There are also a dozen or so wood post from the different native species that are on display (one is seen to the left of the fellow with the bike in the bottom right photo). The middle photo below is the harbor tour boat the Rendezvous. The Rendezvous provides dinner tours of the Coos Bay waterways. Our next stop is at the tug boat and shipping interpretive center. Coos Bay has a deep water port that services several wood product shippers. There are several informational placards as well as the old tug the Koos No. 2 on display (photos below).

  • Our future in Canada
    First impressions of Canada
Did it begin when we first travelled from England to Canada for our honeymoon in 1994? We did see a lot of the country on that trip, flying into Vancouver, seeing the sights and then boarding a train to Toronto. The train trip gives you an idea of just how much peace and open space there is. Magnificent mountain ranges, wide open prairies, then lakes, trees and rugged hills.
    Checking out moving to Canada
minus 25 Fahrenheit ! However with bright blue skies and lots of crisp white snow it was quite beautiful and possible to get about if properly wrapped up. We started to make friends in the village and still wanted the house just as much.
    Decision to move
In March we had our medicals, an experience in itself, but eventually we were both declared fit. Back to waiting. In April we committed ourselves to buying the house subject to receiving visas. June 1, 2000, almost a year after sending in the forms, the visas arrived and we could at last make arrangements to move. We now had 12 months from our medical to get to Canada. However we decided we wanted to be in before the winter. That gave us 3 to 4 months.

For a ship to operate safely, the owners, operators, and crew must embrace a safety culture and create an environment where precautions and safety are primary concerns. Smart operators make decisions with the safety of their passengers, crew and vessel a priority. The safe operation of any vessel requires a keen knowledge of its handling characteristics and limitations. It also requires knowledge of the waters where the vessel is operating, including local weather conditions; water levels; low, slack, and high tides; currents, rapids, and white water; direction of water flow and other water conditions; overhead and underwater obstacles (bridges and underwater cable). Boat and fire drills should be practiced regularly. Practicing responses to a variety of emergency situations will teach crewmembers how to quickly and properly react to any situation. Operators should think about emergency situations and be able to answer "What would I do if" type questions so they can respond decisively if the question becomes, "What do I do now?" To help avoid an actual emergency, it is good procedure to run through a safety checklist before departure (see

    • When planning a passage or just a day out on the water, always get a weather forecast. Although most UK forecasts are written from the same Met Office data the methods of deriving forecasts from this data differ, so try to obtain a second or even third opinion when obtaining weather forecasts. The closer a forecast is issued to the time it is covering, the more accurate it is likely to be. Be aware that forecasting beyond three days in advance is still considered an inexact science, so treat the last 2 days of any 5 day forecast with caution. Understanding the underlying patterns that drive the weather in your part of the world allows you to understand what is happening when forecasts prove inaccurate or unavailable, and make you much less likely to be caught out. This is why an understanding of weather is a core seamanship skill included in the Yachtmaster® syllabus. You can also improve your level of understanding with the help of a number of RYA publications available in the RYA shop (select meteorology in the drop down list).
