Location: Alberta Government Sust. Res. Dev. Fish and Wildlife Wildlife in Alberta ... Weasel Family Management Last Review/Updated: May 31, 2002 Wildlife is a renewable resource. Renewable resources are those natural resources which are capable of replenishing themselves. Such resources include forest trees, agricultural crops, grassland forage and water, as well as fish and all forms of wildlife. At any given point in time, the abundance of a renewable resource depends upon the rate at which it is being used and the rate at which it is replenishing itself. Weasels, like all living things, have limited rates of reproduction. This determines how many of these animals people can harvest without harming their populations. The Fish and Wildlife Division is responsible for maintaining desirable levels of wildlife populations in the province. Provincial government legislation, the Wildlife Act , covers all members of the weasel family. They are classed as either "fur-bearing animals" or "fur-bearing carnivores." This act protects all weasels and their homes and specifies the circumstances by which they can be harvested or controlled. Because of the economic value of their fur, the Government of Alberta allows commercial trapping of weasels. The Fish and Wildlife Division estimates the population level of each weasel species. By registering all trappers, traplines and fur sales, Fish and Wildlife determines the number of each species being harvested. If a population, such as the river otter, is in danger of being overharvested, Fish and Wildlife may reduce trapping quotas, shorten season lengths and designate areas closed to trapping to limit the harvest, thereby ensuring the future welfare of Alberta's furbearer populations.

27. Country Reflections Article - Mallard
Country Reflections wildlife column Mallard. weasel ferocious predator ablur as it closes in on its victim. LIKE a tiny tiger in its ferocity,
http://www.countryreflections.co.uk/columns/weasel.htm
WEASEL: ferocious predator a blur as it closes in on its victim LIKE a tiny tiger in its ferocity, the weasel strikes terror into the shy inhabitants of hedgerows or fields when it sets out to hunt them.
Savage in its pursuit of prey, the bigger male still measures just eight inches long without its stubby tail and weighs about four ounces.
Whether shooting across the road like an elongated mouse, or bounding excitedly after its quarry, the weasel is usually moving too fast for close study. Described memorably by one observer as looking like an 'animated cigar', the weasel boasts a beautiful chestnut coat which gives way to a milky white underside. Still widespread across the country, it nests in any available crevice, giving birth to five or six young at a time. Smaller than its equally vicious cousin, the stoat, the weasel's dexterity and acrobatics are legendary. Mice and voles are its main prey but weasels will also take rabbits and rats when they can overpower them.
Nesting songbirds are another favourite target and its ultra thin body means the weasel has no difficulty slipping inside most garden nestboxes. Even boxes whose entrance holes measure less than an inch and a quarter in diameter are not safe.

The British Wildlife Centre Collection Weasel - Mustela nivalis The weasel is the smallest member of the Mustelid family and Britain's smallest carnivore. It is smaller than the stoat and has no black tip to its tail, although it does have small white patches under its chin and throat.
It is widespread and common on mainland Britain but absent from Ireland. Like the stoat it is still persecuted by gamekeepers. The weasel may travel up to 2.5 km on a hunting expedition. It climbs well and will often raid birds nests, taking the eggs and young. When ratting, its courage is even greater than the stoat's. Female weasels are considerably smaller than males, but both are small enough to pursue rats, mice and even field voles in their own tunnels. It is common in most habitats and frenetically active both day and night as it must consume a quarter to a third of its body weight every day to survive.
Origin:

Native. British Distribution Size: Males 20 - 22 cm, plus short tail 6.5 cm. Females 15 - 18 cm, plus short tail 4.5 cm. Description: Body and neck cylindrical and long, legs short. Brown on the back, white under-parts. Smaller than the stoat.

http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/dnr/fur/species/weasel.html
Weasels Scientific name Mustela frenata (long-tailed weasel); Mustela nivalis (least weasel) Description Two species of weasels live in Illinoisthe long-tailed weasel and the least weasel. The long-tailed weasel is 2-3 times larger than the least weasel. Both have long, slender bodies, short legs, and a broad, slightly flattened head that's barely larger around than the neck. Male long-tailed weasels are larger (13-16 inches in length; 6-16 ounces) than females (11-14 inches in length; 3-9 ounces). The tail is nearly half as long as the head and body combined and has a distinctive black tip. The least weasel is the smallest living carnivore in Illinois. Males are up to 10 inches in length (including the tail) and weigh 2.1-3.2 ounces. Females are up to 9 inches in length and weigh 1.2-2.5 ounces. The tail is less than one-fourth of the length of the head and body combined. Both species have a summer coat that's reddish-brown or tan except for a yellowish-white belly. Weasels begin shedding their summer coats during early fall and replace them with winter coats that tend to be lighter in color. In parts of northern Illinois, the winter coat is nearly all white, helping them to blend in with a snowy background and avoid detection by predators like hawks and owls. Further south (where snow cover is uncommon), the winter coat can have patches of brown and white or remain mostly brown like the summer coat. Weasels molt again in the spring, replacing their winter coats with darker summer colors.

Weasel Family
Members of the weasel family vary greatly in size, appearance, and behavior, but they all have low-slung bodies, short legs, and short, rounded ears. Most are nocturnal, so the best time to look for them is at dusk and dawn. Weasel
Weasels are long and slender. They have brown bodies with white underparts and a black tip on the tail. In winter, they turn completely white except for the tail tip. Adult males are about 12 inches long (including the tail); females are half that size. Weasels spend most of their time on the ground hunting. Mink
Minks are long and thin, but larger than weasels. Adult males are 20-30 inches long (including the tail). Their bodies are chocolate brown to black except for white chin patches. They live and hunt on the ground near water and are good swimmers. Marten
Martens are taller and stouter than mink. Adults are about two feet long, including their long, bushy tails. They usually have orange or buff-colored throat patches. Secretive and elusive, martens spend most of the time in the trees and are rarely seen.
