March 8, 2004 It was 5:15 p.m. on January 13 when Timothy Spahr received the daily batch of observations from the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) telescope in Socorro, New Mexico. The telescope searches the skies for new asteroids. Spahr, an astronomer at the Minor Planet Center at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was heading out for dinner with a colleague visiting from Hawaii. He quickly sifted through the data. Out of the thousands of observations, he was unable to identify five objects. Nothing uncommon. As usual, Spahr calculated possible orbits for the objects and posted his results on a Web site, so that other scientists could confirm the location of the asteroids. Then he left for the day. What Spahr didn't realize was that for one of the five objects, he projected an orbit that showed a direct impact with Earth the next day.

Irrigation systems allow rivers to be used to water fields so that they can growcrops. Most of the world s water is contained in her oceans.

River Basins and the Water Cycle A river basin is an area of land that is drained of its water by a river system. They can be any size from a couple of miles width to the size of a large country. A river basin will contain all the elements that make up a river system from its source until it reaches the sea. The boundary of the river basin is called a watershed. Typically, a watershed is formed by the crest of a hill or a mountain. Any rain that falls onto one side of a hill will fall into one water basin. Any rain that falls on the other side should end up in a different water basin system. Rivers can have many sources. They usually start in higher land areas where the rain falls on the hills or on the mountains. Sometimes, especially in mountainous areas, the water could actually fall as snow. The source would then be the snow as it melts. It is also possible for water to be pushed up from under the ground in what are called springs. The source of the water will form small streams of water as it flows from high land to lower land. These streams will form into tributaries which in turn will flow into larger and larger rivers. Finally, you will have one major river for the basin that will flow into the sea at the mouth of the river. Water in the sea is heated by the sun and evaporates. As it rises, the cooler air condenses the vapour and turns it into clouds. The wind in weather systems then move these clouds around and often back over land. These clouds can release the water as rain, hail, sleet or snow. The cycle then starts again.

Courses
Because of the renumbering of courses in the Department, students should see for a list of equivalent courses.
GEOG 200 World Geography (3 credits)
This course provides an overview of world geography. It first examines the main environmental and social factors that geographers have employed to divide the world into a series of distinctive regions, and uses examples of specific countries to explore the distinctive geographical processes by which these patterns are transformed and perpetuated.
NOTE: Students who have completed courses numbered GEOG 209 and above may not take GEOG 200-208 for credit.
GEOG 203 (also listed as SCHA 203) Canadian Environmental Issues (3 credits)
This course explores a number of contemporary and controversial environmental issues in Canada. It provides a general overview of the policy context of environmental decision-making, focusing in particular on the involvement of aboriginal groups in natural resource management and the role of various levels of government, non-government organizations, the news media and the international community in shaping Canadian environmental policies. Issues explored in the course include national parks, animal rights, fisheries management, and northern development and environmental impact assessment.
NOTE: Students who have received credit for GEOZ 203, SCHA 203, 254, or for this topic under a GEOG 298 number may not take this course for credit.

Atmospheric Systems
Atmospheric systems research within the group is split into the following three linked areas of:
Monitoring
Process Studies Applied climatology
Central to all three is the role of precipitation and precipitation related processes.
1. Monitoring
Precipitation is one of the most fundamental of all climate variables due to its importance as a natural resource and its role in atmospheric dynamics. Building on earlier research retrieving rainfall information from microwave satellite data as part of the
Figure 1 NASA Mission to Planet Earth WetNet Project (Figure 1), the focus on monitoring has centred around the development and testing of satellite based precipitation methods. Dominic Kniveton has been a contributor to a series of international precipitation intercomparison projects conducted under the auspices of the Global Precipitation Precipitation Climatology Project  (GPCP) and the NASA WetNet Project, and was responsible for the analysis and processing on the first WetNet Precipitation Intercomparion Project, PIP-1. Currently Dominic is on the science team of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission exploring the delineation of low rain rates over land and is a co-investigator on a project to explore the utility of Meteosat Second  Generation data to monitor the hydrological cycle in southern Africa. Recent rainfall retrieval work has focused on combining different satellite data sets to provide small-scale rainfall information using such techniques as neural networks in collaboration with Tim Bellerby from the University of Hull, Martin Todd from UCL and Chris Kidd from the University of Birmingham (Figure 2).
