Welcome to the Wizard Water Ski Club Cyber World The following text is simply an intro to a not so typical water ski and wakeboard club in North America. For the latest news, click on ALL the above Bumfluff's but, we encourage you to read about us in the following. We are located at 53.4 deg nth latitude where the sun shines 18 hours per day in Summer and 6 in winter. Our season lasts from May (Brrrr) to October (Brrrrr) although we have skied on April 7th (earliest) and around November 15th (latest) at our site. The rest of the time, id be frozen man! Well! It is now the Summer of 2005 and the Club is in full swing! Check out the Bumfluff for pics, info and other tidbits Wizard Winter Skiing Pics The Wizard Water Ski Club is located about 75 km southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, on the south shore of Wizard lake. The club is one of the largest and oldest (since 1961) in Alberta. Our membership ranges from recreational skiers (re. Wally's) to past national champions (yes Vern Oberg did actually win the senior men's overall title a few years ago and Cindy Trueman is the Current Women's 3 National Champ!). Besides three event skiers, we also have many wakeboarders and barefooters (none of the barefooters are any good, but they always have lots of beer). Actually, methinks we have more wakeboarders! But, can't tell because they never get up until the afternoon. We even have a few Air Chair wankers - lots of stuff to do here.... The club site itself is located on a parcel of land which was acquired in the early 60's as a long term lease from the Goodrich family. Now, the land is solely owned by the Wizard Water Ski Club. The site consists of: the club shack (a clubhouse overlooking the lake), lakeside sauna/change room and pier, equipment and gas sheds, various club member cabins, slalom couse, ski jump, and of course a couple of ski boats (a 94 American Skier TBX, and a 92 Flightcraft outboard). The down side is that Wizard Lake is fully accessible to the public and within an hours drive of Edmonton (750,000 people), so the lake can and does get swamped with (the curse of all ski clubs) wallies and jet skiers.

Generally, California permits nearly any kind of recreation on major storage reservoirs. California has some terminal water supply reservoirs that provide recreation in the form of boating and fishing, but not water contact recreation like swimming or water skiing. Other jurisdictions prohibit any human activities in the watershed of terminal reservoirs. This has been the source of considerable tension between water managers, who would prefer no possible contamination, and recreation advocates, who believe the risk of contamination is tolerable, considering the degree of treatment that is required. In the San Francisco Bay area, the East Bay reservoirs generally permit some fishing and boating recreation while the San Franciso Peninsula reservoirs (Crystal Springs and Lake Pilarcitos) generally prohibit access even to the watershed without a special permit. It is my understanding that the difference is because the water source for Crystal Springs Reservoir is the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct from Yosemite Park. This water is so pure and free of minerals that the only treatment it receives before distribution is the addition of a small amount of lime to reduce its corrosive effect on pipes.

Water releases from the reservoirs during the dry summer months have also resulted in an improved river fishery. Species of fish vary between projects, depending on such variables as water quality and temperature. Lake trout, bass, brown trout, muskellunge, walleye, panfish and many others are waiting to be caught. Boat Launch Swimming Fishing Winter Sports Park Origin and History: The first white man to enter the region probably was Peter Skene Ogden, who trapped beaver in the area during 1829 for the Hudson Bay Company. Other trappers followed Ogden's route, and soon the Humboldt Trail was established. An area at the park's north end where emigrants rested and grazed their livestock became known as Lessen Meadows. The Applegate-Lessen Cut Off to California and Oregon left the trail at the meadows, and a barrel placed there served as an informal post office for emigrants. In the 1860's the nearby town of Unionville, Rochester and Star City boomed after the gold and silver strikes, but died quickly when the veins ran out. The town of Rye Patch, located closed to the river, processed ore from the mines with a 10-stamp mill built in 1864. Named for a patch of wild rye along the railroad route, Rye Patch had a school, post office, boarding house and, after 1869, a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The mill processed one million dollars worth of gold and silver, but after it closed down in 1877, the town gradually declined.

Back to Main Previous Index Contact us Water Sports Before you use park areas or any waterways with a boat or other watercraft, be sure to check the appropriate park office or governing agency for a map and list of regulations. Brochures are available at the main national park offices in Bushkill and, in New Jersey, at Kittatinny Point Visitor Center on I-80. A motorized boat must be registered. Canoes, kayaks and tubes do not have to be, but if they are registered you don't have to pay launch fees at state parks. In all crafts, you must have U.S. Coast Guard-approved, wearable personal flotation devices (PFDs) or life jackets for each person on board. Become familiar with the Pennsylvania regulations for PFDs and boat registration. For most of this information, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boating Commission can be reached at, Bureau of Boating, P.O. Box 67000, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17106-7000, 570-657-4518. Good preparation for boating starts by taking a boating safety course. The Coast Guard Hotline can give information on where to register for a course. The course includes "rules of the road," equipment requirements, boat handling, boat loading, weather notes a float plan, emergency tips and more.
