It shouldn't. Illinois has taken in a big way to water skiing, a sport that has grown to involve some 15 million participants nationwide and one that has developed an amazing diversity of types. No longer limited to "two square-backed boards," today's water skier might just as likely be found riding a kneeboard (a short surfboard-like device) or "barefooting" with no skis at all! Many Illinoisans have taken up the thrill of tournament skiing, competing against one another in the slalom, trick and jumping events. Still others prefer putting on Cypress Gardens-style ski shows. Originally an exhibition sport, water skiing became a competitive sport in 1939 with the development of the American Water Ski Association (USA Water Ski). Today there are almost 11 million water skiers in the United States alone, and thousands more learning each year. The slalom course contains six buoys on alternating sides that the skier must successfully go around while the boat stays on a straight path. The difficulty comes when the rope is shortened, then it is more challenging for the skier to wrap around the buoy. The shorter the rope, the faster you must travel to successfully get from one buoy to the next. The intense acceleration and rocket-like speeds that occur while chasing down the next buoy down are amazing. NQ Water has decided to allow the Townsville Water Ski Club to use the Ross River Dam on a trial basis starting from June 2001. The Club already uses the Dam for competition events for 12 weekends each year - this has been the case for many years. Six to 14 boats participate in these events, racing over either a 13.5 km or 5.3 km course. There has also been some limited use of the Dam for training by our world champions. Ross River Dam offers the only stretch of calm water suitable for long course events. This is particularly significant given the number of champion skiers based in the local area, including the state and national barefoot water ski champions, and the world disabled slalom and jump champion.
