Water skiing is a warm-weather sport in which a motor-propelled craft tows a skier through the water. Equipment Once made of highly polished wood, most skis are now made of plastics, polyurethane foam, and other materials. They come in many different sizes and styles, depending on whether their intended use is cross-country, downhill, or backcountry skiing or ski jumping. The bindings that attach the ski to the boot vary as well. Most skiers also use a pair of poles, each of which has a wriststrap on the top, a sharp tip on the bottom, and a circular ring about 4 in. (10 cm) from the tip to prevent it from sinking into the snow. The bottoms of skis may be waxed for maximum glide in varying snow conditions. Types of Events Traditional competitive skiing comprises four events: (1) downhill, a steep descent in a race against time; (2) slalom, raced on a sharply twisting course marked off by flags; (3) the ski jump, in which contestants leap from specially prepared jump slopes, and are judged on both distance and form; and (4) cross-country, in which skiers race over a long course (ranging from 10 km/6 mi to 50 km/31 mi in the Olympic games) on which the terrain and obstacles test stamina and maneuverability. The first two are known as Alpine events, the latter two as Nordic events.

... Windermere remembered Beaumont keeps Windermere protest afloat Published on Monday 06 May 2002 By Kate Hoey - The Daily Telegraph BILL BEAUMONT , the former captain of England and the British Lions, is a mild and reasonable man. Not someone who could be described as a `demonstrator'. But he, like many others who share a love of water sports, is gearing up for months of campaigning. Last August, he joined in a mass boat parade when 400 craft circled Belle Isle in Lake Windermere to protest against the introduction of a 10 miles per hour speed limit on Lake Windermere in three years' time. The effects of the restriction will stop water skiing, wakeboarding, power boating and jet skiing on the lake.

The Slovak Junior Olympic Team celebrating their Bronze medal victory in 1999 Slovakia has always been a country with a rich sports tradition. Among the winter sports, ice hockey and skiing are especially dominant here, but figure skating also has a great tradition. The natural conditions implore the inhabitants of this country to the cultivate winter sports. Football, volleyball, tennis and ice hockey are popular. There is a very good network of marked trails in all mountain areas, and it is possible to plan a walking tour in advance. Hunting is available. Highlights Since independence Slovakia has been represented as a unique nation in the Olympics and other international sports venues. Although Slovaks played a prominent role under the banner of "Czechoslovakia" they had to prove themselves all over again under their new nation state. Slovakia made its Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer 1994. Success has followed for this nation of 5 million people. At the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Slovakia picked up 3 medals, including one gold. Nagano 1998 was shutout but victories in other international events followed. At the Hockey World Juniors in 1999 the Slovak team managed to get bronze. In 2000, at the Icehockey World Championships Slovakia clinched the silver medal after a defeat by their former partners, the Czech Republic.

PAT MESSNER
Pat Messner Pat Messner has the distinction of being Canada's only Olympic medallist in water skiing. That happened at the 1972 Games where water skiing was on the program as a demonstration sport. She won the bronze in women's slalom, an achievement that launched a successful international career. ''Being at the Olympics was an amazing experience,'' said Messner, who was coached by her father Joe Messner, a 15-time national champion. They currently run Mesle Canada Water Ski School in Ottawa. ''I wish it could have been granted official status but unfortunately it didn't work out. Still, water skiing remains extremely popular at the participation and that in large parts explains Canada's continued success.'' After the Olympics, Messner ran off a string of firsts for a Canadian woman. She won four world championship medals including the gold in women's slalom in 1979. She was the first Canadian woman to win gold at the Masters Tournament finishing first in slalom in 1978. Messner collected 18 national titles- the first in 1964- and broke Canadian records 19 times. She was on the national team in 1972 and from 1975-80. Place of Birth: Ottawa, ON

Jaret Llewellyn sweeps all four gold at Canadian Open water skiing championships
August 22, 2004 ABBOTSFORD, B.C.- Jaret Llewellyn of Innisfail, Alta., won all four gold medals in men's competition Sunday in the open event to conclude the 55th Canadian Water Ski Championships at Albert Dyck Park. Llewellyn, who is the Wayne Gretzky of Canadian water skiing and still going strong in his 21st season on the national team, withstood tough challenges from some of Canada's brightest young stars in the sport for his victories in jump and slalom. In jump, Llewellyn prevailed leaping 68.5 metres to edge Ryan Dodd of Olds, Alta., in second at 67.3 while Kole Magnowski of Russell, Man., was third at 60.0. "Ryan is probably one of two guys I worry the most about from anywhere in the world in the jump competition," said the 33-year-old Llewellyn. "I really had to fight hard for that win." In slalom, Llewellyn prevailed at 53 buoys just beating out 16-year-old Jason McClintock of Cambridge, Ont., at 52.25. Dodd, 20, was third at 51. In tricks however, Llewellyn was unchallenged tabulating 11,090 points with Dodd second at 9,260 and Alexandre Lallier of Quebec third at 5,700.

Eager to follow a fast-paced exercise routine to prepare for ski moguls, Olympic ski champion Shannon Bahrke mountain bikes, hikes, water skis and takes to the links six times a week. "I love being outdoors, experiencing the mountains and fresh air, so my exercise routine is pretty much the same," the 23-year-old Park City, Utah, resident says with a laugh. "So many outdoor activities cross train for ski season. For instance, water skiing is awesome because you use your back a lota direct relationship to mogul skiing. Having a strong back is essential." With over 15 career top-10 finishes for Freestyle Ski Moguls on the World Cup circuit, the 5'4" natural athlete complements her outdoor activities with regular gym routines. "Depending on the phase of the year we do different things, but most of the time it's endurance training. We need a lot of endurance to last the whole season," Bahrke explains. "There's also a lot of strength training to keep muscles fit while building themmaking sure they can take the impact of what we do." Intervals of 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off are an integral part of Bahrke's training. "Because a mogul run is only 30 to 40 seconds, you need a lot of energy in a short burst of time," she says.

This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.
