Water Skiing, A Look Back Through 75 Years
1920's 1930's 1940's 1950's ... 1990's
  • Ralph Samuelson designed the first water skis from two pine boards and successfully skied on Lake Pepin in Lake City, MN
  • Samuelson made the first water ski jumps off a makeshift ramp. Fred Waller patented the first water skis, the "Dolphin Akwa-Skees."
  • Don Ibsen develops his won water skis on the West Coast, never having hears of Samuelson or Waller.
  • The first ski shows are held at the Century of Progress in Chicago and the Atlantic City Steel Pier.
  • American Water Ski Association (AWSA) was organized by Dan B. Hains. The first National Water Ski Championships are held on Long Island.
  • A.G. Hancock and Dick Pope, Jr., became the first barefoot water skiers respectively. Chuck Sligh set the first water ski jump record of 49 feet at the Dixie Water Ski Tournament at Cypress Gardens.
  • First World Water Ski Championships held in France. Willa Worthington and Dick Pope, Jr., represent the U.S. and Worthington wins slalom, jump and overall titles. Martin meters for measuring jump distances are introduced.

Demonstration Sports at the Olympic Games At most modern day Olympic Games there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games, but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later gone on to become official Olympic sports. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games, but now they are often used as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic medal sport. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include the following:
  • American Football: 1932, Los Angeles

HONG KONG WATER SKI ASSOCIATION (II)
The forming of HKWSA
Aims and Objectives
The Mission Statement of the HKWSA is ¡V
"To increase the awareness of, and encourage the greater participation in towed water sports in Hong Kong. In particular the sports of Water skiing, wakeboarding and their derivatives.¡¨
The Objectives of the HKWSA is ¡V
- To train and develop skiers/riders from elementary to national and international level.
- To represent Hong Kong in regional and international events.
Sadly after the loss of regular use of the West side Coffer Dam until 2000, the high standards achieved in the late 1970's and early 1980's were not maintained. However, negotiations with the Government have resulted in increased access use of the Coffer Dam on two Saturdays every month during November to May. This objective remains at the top of our list. HKWSA's medium term objectives include:
- Securing a permanent site for competitive skiing and training
- Establishing low-cost mass skiing facility, probably by means of overhead cable - Providing ski boats and competent drivers to enable members to ski more regularly - Encouraging new and especially young skiers to channel their energy into developing competitive skiing/wakeboarding skills, so that the Association will one day be able to field a world-class ski team

Rollerskating ballroom dancing (also known as dancesport) and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games . You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding as new events to future Olympic competitions
Olympic Events - Too Many Dumb Ones
There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics . They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events ? These are not sporting events, these are ways of killing people. The same goes for synchronized swimming , which you'll be seeing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece . If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport. What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's Bodybuilding actually defined as a circus act or a freak show) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies, rather than sports.

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer
