On this page: Encyclopedia WordNet Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping skiing Encyclopedia skiing, sport of sliding over snow on skis—long, narrow, flexible runners. Water skiing is a warm-weather sport in which a motor-propelled craft tows a skier through the water. Equipment Once made of highly polished wood, most skis are now made of plastics, polyurethane foam, and other materials. They come in many different sizes and styles, depending on whether their intended use is cross-country, downhill, or backcountry skiing or ski jumping. The bindings that attach the ski to the boot vary as well. Most skiers also use a pair of poles, each of which has a wriststrap on the top, a sharp tip on the bottom, and a circular ring about 4 in. (10 cm) from the tip to prevent it from sinking into the snow. The bottoms of skis may be waxed for maximum glide in varying snow conditions. Types of Events Traditional competitive skiing comprises four events: (1) downhill, a steep descent in a race against time; (2) slalom, raced on a sharply twisting course marked off by flags; (3) the ski jump, in which contestants leap from specially prepared jump slopes, and are judged on both distance and form; and (4) cross-country, in which skiers race over a long course (ranging from 10 km/6 mi to 50 km/31 mi in the Olympic games) on which the terrain and obstacles test stamina and maneuverability. The first two are known as Alpine events, the latter two as Nordic events.

This weekend, Wakestock brings the erupting action sport subculture into Toronto's main stream er, lake
    BY PAUL CARLUCCI
This weekend, Centre Island will be transformed into a youth culture hoorah scored by 30 bands and besieged by vendors. Over 50,000 people are expected over four days for the eighth annual Wakestock Festival. The focus is on wakeboarding and wakeskating, two sports that mix water-skiing, skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing, using boats to pull riders through courses. Other action sports will also be present: two back-to-back 80-foot gap jumps for freestyle motocross riders and a free, full-sized skate park built by local designers for amatuers and pros alike. "When all the pros come up, just all the guys from Florida and the states and all that, it's just incredible to watch," says Canadian wakeskater Jono Boysen. "It's really inspiring." This event may be the first time many Torontonians have ever heard of wakeboarding, but for those inside the culture of action sports, this trip into the limelight has been picking up speed for years. At the first Wakestock, in 1998, wakeboarding was the baby of the action sport family, overshadowed by skateboarding and snowboarding.

    Shifting Gears
As founder of the first adaptive water skiing program in the nation, Phil Martin finds his on-going battle with multiple sclerosis to be more of an irony than a hindrance. By Monica Minnick Originally published in The Water Skier Magazine, September 2003 It's been six years since Phil Martin last skied, but he still refers to the disabled water ski community as "us." It was "us" even before he was diagnosed with the disease in 1995, although he prefers to think of it not as a disease, but as an irony. The first time he felt the numbness, he assumed it had something to do with the brutal crash he'd taken off the jump ramp several days earlier. The final verdict blindsided Martin — he had developed multiple sclerosis. Slowly but surely, Martin's vision began to materialize. Disabled water skiing was a demonstration sport in the 1982 and 1983 Special Olympics. In 1989 Martin watched as Bill "Super Quad" Furbish landed a jump for the first time in quadriplegic history. Several years later, Martin helped lead the U.S. Disabled Water Ski Team to two international victories. He was team manager at the 1991 Disabled World Trophy and team coach at the 1993 Disabled Water Ski World Championships — the first year of recognition under the International Water Ski Federation. But nothing was more exciting to Martin than the athletes themselves. "That's what I miss," he says. "Every time we went out, we came back totally awe-inspired. Their determination absolutely blows you away."

    Chamonix, France
Site of the First Winter Games
By Susan Thomas Chamonix (pronounced Sham-oh-nee) is a quaint little town with the language and food of France, and the beauty and class of Switzerland. It was here that the early Olympic organizers decided to hold the very first Winter Games. An ice rink in the shadow of 15,000-foot Mont Blanc provided the setting for skating. A snow made bobsled run, which no longer exists, ran from part way up the mountain and into the town. And the skiing of course took place on the slopes where skiers flock every winter, 74 years later. At the time of the first Winter Games, a train moved people about half way up the mountain to the glacier, Mer de Glace. The train has been upgraded and it is still there for sightseeing. The Mer de Glace is an impressive, immense glacier that runs down the flanks of Mont Blanc almost touching the town of Chamonix. The glacier reaches down into the valley like a crooked old finger made of old snow and blue ice. It wasn't until 1955, 3 decades after those first games, that the Telepherique (tram) de l'Aiguille Du Midi (that's the high peak at the top, translated as the Needle of Noon) carried locals and tourists all the way to the top of the Mer de Glace. Now, that tram lures people from all over the world to Chamonix.

In 1980 a group of 12 International Sports Federations decided to join forces by forming the World Games Council, later to be renamed the International World Games Association (IWGA). The founding meeting was chaired by IOC Executive Board Member Dr. Un Youg Kim, who is also the President of the International Taekwondo Federation. The purpose of the new organization was to create a multisport event for sports (and/or disciplines of sports) not included in the programme of the Olympic Games. This aimed at, among other things, creating more exposure in the media and increased interest from spectators, which would assist the Federations in developing their sports. This initiative came during an era when international sports, including the Olympic Games, were yet to become the great television success - and thus the sponsoring venture - they are today.
    Akita 2001
The 12 International Sports Federations mentioned were: International Badminton Federation (IBF) International Baseball Federation (AINBA) International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB) International Bowling Federation (FIQ) International Casting Federation (ICF) International Softball Federation (ISF) World Union of Karate-do Organization (WUKO) International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) International Roller Skating Federation (FIRS) World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) World Water Ski Union (WWSU)
Now about 20 years later, Badminton, Baseball, Softball, and Teakwondo are no longer involved in the IWGA and the World Games as they are now - provisionally or otherwise - included in the programme of the Olympic Games. In the meantime also other sports, Beach Volleyball, Triathlon, Women's Waterpolo, Women's Weightlifting and individual trampolining, were once included in the programme for the World Games event(s) but are now also part of the Olympic Games.

This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.
