The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has proposed revisions to Iowa's Water Quality Standards. These changes are in response to threatened lawsuits by the Iowa Environmental Council and the Sierra Club, among others. There are three main changes being proposed.
  • Reclassification of all General Use Streams to Class A1 (Primary Contact Recreation). Elimination of the "Protected Flow" concept. Elimination of the adjustment for "effluent-dominated streams."

Green Mountain Water Environment Association Welcome to our website! Mission Statement Green Mountain Water Environment Association is a non-profit group of water supply and wastewater treatment professionals formed by the merger of Vermont's two long-active but separate, water treatment and wastewater treatment organizations. We came together in 1994 to promote public awareness and support of the water treatment and wastewater treatment industries and their water quality professionals. Our combined resources allow GMWEA to represent a variety of water quality interests. These include: Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Industrial Wastewater Treatment, Water Distribution Systems, and Biosolids Management. Our quarterly newsletter, the GMWEA News, brings regulatory updates and association news to all members. GMWEA officers and members regularly provide state and federal officials with input on regulations having an impact on the profession. Board of Directors Membership Training and Events Committees ... Publications library 15 November 2004 - Consultation launched Nitrates Directive Consultation on transposition of the Public Participation Directive and revisions to Nitrate Vulnerable Zones Nitrate levels in many English waters, both ground and surface waters, are increasing. Nitrate pollution is of concern because it has to be removed before water can be supplied to consumers, and it can harm the water environment. Over 70% of nitrate enters water from agricultural land. The following pages provide details of action to reduce agricultural nitrate pollution, which is one aspect of the broader problem of diffuse pollution from agriculture. We are also taking action to reduce similar pollution from other sources. For example, the

ADEQ... We Protect and Enhance Arkansas' Environment
The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality is an agency of the state of Arkansas. We are headquartered in Little Rock and have offices and area inspectors throughout the state. We strive to protect Arkansas' priceless natural resources - its air, water and land - from the threat of pollution. We accomplish this in a variety of ways: Our regulatory programs set and enforce safe environmental limits for industries that affect air, water, solid waste, hazardous waste, regulated storage tanks and mining. Proactive programs encourage Arkansans to be good environmental neighbors. We help communities and businesses develop recycling programs, we help small businesses and communities with environmental compliance and pollution prevention, and much more.

Introduction Adelaide's metropolitan beaches are widely recognised as some of the safest beaches in Australia, due largely to their protected Gulf waters and shallow slopes. Similarly, the beaches of Encounter Bay are some of the most popular outside the metropolitan area for their surf beaches and protected waters for swimming. The EPA monitors water quality along the beaches to identify any problems that may affect the health of bathers and marine life. During and after storms, pollution may be washed down into drains, and flow into creeks and rivers. This pollution can then be washed out into the sea and the water in which we swim. Other pollution may come from overflows from sewers or from accidental spills. It is generally a good idea to avoid swimming near creek and river outlets or stormwater drains when they are flowing after storms. Discharges from industry and the wastewater treatment plants can also contribute to water pollution problems.

Water quality
The National Water Quality Management Strategy (NWQMS) was introduced in 1992 as a response to growing community concern about the condition of the Australia's water bodies and the need to manage them in an environmentally sustainable manner. The policy objective for the Strategy is "to achieve sustainable use of the nation's water resources by protecting and enhancing their quality while maintaining economic and social development." The Strategy provides policies, a process for water quality management, and a set of national guidelines that cover issues across the whole of the water cycle. The guidelines focus on specific water resource issues and aim to help the community, catchment managers, environment protection agencies and water authorities to develop local action plans for water quality management. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/
Transportation planning and project development must reflect the desires of communities, and take into account the impacts on both the natural and human environments. Transportation projects are closely looked at to see how they might impact the community, the natural environment, and our health and welfare. Before any project can move forward to construction, the FHWA must address and comply with laws related to the environment. These laws cover social, economic, and environmental concerns ranging from community cohesion to threatened and endangered species. To get through this detailed process, FHWA and FTA use the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to evaluate impacts associated with each individual project. Two Offices within the Federal Highway Administration focus on environmental protection and enhancement. The Office of Natural and Human Environment primarily focuses on environmental programs associated with air quality, noise, and water quality, and on programs associated with the built environment, including transportation enhancements, bicycle and pedestrian facilities and scenic byways. The Office of Project Development and Environmental Review focuses on NEPA project development process as a balanced and streamlined approach to transportation decisionmaking that takes into account the potential impacts on both human and natural resources and the public's need for safe and efficient transportation improvements. Information regarding the full range of FHWA environmental programs can be found on this website. If you don't see the topic you are looking for, check our
