    By Pat Bigold
    Star-Bulletin
Honolulu's Chris Duplanty knows the best way to distract attention from his nearly nude photo on the cover of Life magazine is to win a medal at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Not that the United States water polo team captain is embarrassed by the photo that shows him and three teammates holding water polo balls in strategic places. In fact, it the photo has added to the 30-year-old bachelor's catalogue of snappy one-liners. "Thank God we play water polo and not tennis," he said. "Every four years, water polo gets a little exposure, and this is it," deadpanned the former University of California-Irvine and Punahou star. Duplanty said he and the others helped Life with its unique Olympic photo essay, 'Naked Power,' because they knew it would be both classic and classy. "We all had a lot of fun doing it, but if Playgirl calls, I'm not calling back," he said with a laugh. The pose ranks above Duplanty's first big media splash in 1994's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

    History
As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports developed, roughly patterned after land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. Water rugby became the most popular of these sports, but somehow the water polo name became attached to it, and it's been attached ever since. As played in England, the object of the game was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. The goaltender stood on the pool deck, ready to dive on any opponent who was about to score. Water polo quickly became a very rough sport, filled with underwater fights away from the ball, and it wasn't unusual for players to pass out for lack of air. In 1877, the sport was tamed in Scotland by the addition of goalposts. The Scots also replaced the original small, hard rubber ball with a soccer ball and adopted rules that prohibited taking the ball under the surface or "tackling" a player unless he had the ball.

Greece Hungary in Naples Italy Water polo is a team water sport , which can be best described as a combination of swimming football (soccer) basketball ice hockey ... rugby and wrestling . A team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The goal of the game resembles that of football/soccer—to score as many goals as possible, each goal being worth one point. A perfect water polo athlete can be best described as having the over-arm accuracy of a baseball pitcher , the vertical of a volleyball player, the toughness of a hockey player, the endurance of a cross-country skier and the strategy of a chess player. Of course, to find a player of this ability is difficult.

    http://www.waterpoloaus.asn.au/info/Info1999/Info05/History.htm
INFORMATION History of Water Polo in Australia As far back as 1876, a Scotsman named William Wilson devised the first rules for a game played between teams in the water. The first games were held in England as a reaction to the public's boredom with the swimming carnivals of the time. The game was later to be known as WATER POLO, although this name is a misnomer, being stolen from a game which preceded it. That game was played atop barrels and truly resembled the sport of polo. Although very rough in the early days until the late 1960s, the game now is an energetic sport which emphasises swimming ability and ball skill over toughness. It is played by both men and women and is the longest-standing team sport in the Olympic Games, being introduced in Paris in 1900. The sport is governed by FINA, the world swimming body, and is played in more than 100 countries. The Sport
The sport is the most physically demanding of all team games, requiring top performers to cover up to three kilometres in the pool during the one hour it takes to complete a game. This exertion is quite apart from the physical contact, both above and below the surface of the water that players must endure. Despite this, the sport is almost totally devoid of injury from personal contact and generally speaking is played in the spirit demanded by the stringent rules.

Players must tread water throughout Water polo is one of the Olympics' most demanding sports - fast and furious from first to last.
The game consists of four seven-minute periods, during which no quarter is asked or given. While rough play is punished, most of the players' bodies are submerged underwater out of the view of the referees, so it is difficult to spot foul play. Holding or pulling people down under water, grabbing, pushing, eye gouging or swimming trunk yanking are all common occurrences. In between the rule bending, the aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition. TOURNAMENT TEAMS Men

In Water Polo, the Brutality Is Just Beneath the Surface
By Peter Carlson Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, August 19, 2004; Page C01 ATHENS, Aug. 18 Sure, all these swimming races are exciting and inspiring and all that, but after a few days of watching people paddle back and forth across a pool, your average red-blooded American sports fan begins to wonder: Hey, where's the violence? Fortunately, the happy answer is just a couple hundred yards away, in the indoor pool, where the preliminary rounds of water polo are in progress. There's enough violence in an average water polo match to fill all your brutality needs, at least until football season starts.
With all the churning white water in the pool, there are plenty of penalties a water polo referee will never see. Wedgies are one of the more benign tactics. (Michael Robinson-chavez The Washington Post)

    The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.
