In King Edward's reign of England (1307-1327), laws were passed that threatened imprisonment to anyone caught playing soccer. King Edward's proclamation said:" For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future." Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. A group of about twenty young men had gathered in the gymnasium of the Farragut Boat Club in order to hear the outcome of the Harvard-Yale football game. After Yale's victory was announced and bets were paid off, a man picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone. Swimming.

WATER POLO REPORT Sunday, September 24 Twenty-year fight won in a flash
From Craig Lord in Sydney Forget the 1912 wrestling bout that took so long - 11 hours and 40 minutes - to decide that refreshments had to be served every half an hour. The title of longest-fought tussle towards an Olympic title passed to the Australian women’s water polo team tonight with their 4-3 victory over the United States in front of a riotous record-breaking crowd of 17,500. The match took less than an hour, was decided in just over a second, but was 20 years in the making, and Australians led the charge from the moment they launched the campaign to have women’s water polo included in the Games after watching a men-only tournament for 100 years. The dry fight was every bit as bruising as the wet one at the weekend. Wearing green and gold wigs and swim suits and brandishing balls aloft their heads, the bouncing Matildas had stormed an IOC meeting to grab the headlines four years ago. A year later they were at it again, waving banners at Sydney airport in the face of a frowning Mustapha Larfaoui, the Algerian who is a member of the IOC and heads Fina, swimming’s global authority. They even threatened to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. The IOC succumbed in 1998. Tonight, while the lean and lithe of the swimming world celebrated the end of their Games, the latest belles of the baths turned the waters of the Ryde Aquatic Centre into the world’s biggest washing machine, so frantic was the froth generated by 22 bodies bashing about.

WATER POLO REPORT Sunday, October 1 Hungary outmuscle old foes
From Craig Lord in Sydney The blood that turned the water polo pool red the last time the Games were held in Australia was thankfully missing today, but the shadows of Melbourne, 1956, are clearly long. In the first water polo final of the 21st century, Hungary defeated Russia 13-6 to extend their tally of Olympic titles to a record seven, and evidently there is still little love lost between the two nations. The Russians did not go over to the Hungarians to congratulate them in tune with tradition after the final whistle, camaraderie possibly impossible after politics had been allowed to pour into the pool at the Melbourne Games in 1956. Even after the medals were presented, there was no handshaking, no eye-contact, no Olympic spirit. More time is needed for these particular old wounds. Three weeks before the Games of 1956, Russian firepower had crushed an anti-communist uprising as Soviet troops took charge on the street of Budapest and the Olympic water polo semi-final was a bloodbath that had to be stopped before the end. Hungary were powerless in politics but triumphant in the pool, winning 4-0, while police were brought in to quell the fighting that broke out among spectators. The Hungarians went on to win the final. They did so again today as the Russians became the victims of a different kind of firepower, folding under the weight of a Hungary team that outperformed them on every level, even size. The 12 Hungarians averaged out at 6ft 4in and 15st 4lb; the Russians at 6ft 2in and 12st 10lb.

Whitney Foster, Peter Gordon, Ed Hirsch, John Testa, Ed Opalach, Jerry Mujica and other "post collegiate" players form the Atlanta WPC, aka Georgia Tech Water Polo. Program grows rapidly over the next year including large growth of GT undergraduate participation. Atlanta WPC starts hosting tournaments, including several Zone Championships, and starts to build a reputation as a great host. ATL WPC sends squads to several USWP Indoor National Championships ('92, '93). In 1992 ATL WPC becomes the only water polo team in the U.S. sponsored by PowerBar as part of the company's TEAM Elite program.
Moving On Up - 1994-1995
More and more GT students join the club and playing time becomes an issue. Knowing that it was in the best interest of those GT student who wanted to play, ATL WPC moved on to help start club water polo at nearby Emory University. After just over a year Emory student participation soars and the "post collegiate" players again decide to move on. In just over 2 years ATL WPC has been critical in the foundation of three new water polo clubs in Atlanta: Georgia Tech, Emory (men) and Emory (women).

History of Water Polo in Australia
As far back as 1876, a Scotsman named William Wilson devised the first rules for a game played between teams in the water. The first games were held in England as a reaction to the public's boredom with the swimming carnivals of the time. The game was later to be known as WATER POLO, although this name is a misnomer, being stolen from a game which preceded it. That game was played atop barrels and truly resembled the sport of polo. Although very rough in the early days until the late 1960s, the game now is an energetic sport which emphasises swimming ability and ball skill over toughness. It is played by both men and women and is the longest-standing team sport in the Olympic Games, being introduced in Paris in 1900. The sport is governed by FINA, the world swimming body, and is played in more than 100 countries. The Sport
The sport is the most physically demanding of all team games, requiring top performers to cover up to three kilometres in the pool during the one hour it takes to complete a game. This exertion is quite apart from the physical contact, both above and below the surface of the water that players must endure. Despite this, the sport is almost totally devoid of injury from personal contact and generally speaking is played in the spirit demanded by the stringent rules.

History Little is known about the origins of water polo. However, it is known that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-nineteenth century England as a water version of rugby. Early games used an inflated, rubber ball from India known as a "pulu,"pronounced "polo" by the English. Both the ball and the game became known as water polo. In 1870, to attract more spectators to swimming events, the London Swimming Association created a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools. The U.S.A. started playing Water Polo in 1888. However, the American version of water polo resembled American Football in the water. Games were so spectacular that by the late 1890s it was one of the nation's most popular spectator sports. In 1890 the New York Athletic Club started playing the game Water Polo, and at the Sydenham Swimmers Club, J.H. Smith and Arnold Heilban started a Water Polo team (1900). The sport has been popular ever since. The Sport Water Polo is a team sport. You have to shoot a buoyant ball into a netted goal. The goals are rectangular with a wood, metal or plastic frame.

Back to CAAWS June 17, 2000 13 is lucky for women's water polo team Montreal, - The puzzle has been solved. The International Olympic Committee finally rendered its decision to allow 13 players per team in the women's water polo tournament at the Sydney Games. Thirteen is also the number of players permitted under the international federation's rules. Thirteen is also the number players allowed per team in the men's Olympic tournament. The women, who had to fight hard to be admitted into the Olympic family, also had to battle for Olympic fairness in their own sport.
Daniel Berthelette, the head coach of the women's national team, says the Australians must be credited for today's decision. "The Australians put a lot of pressure. Playing 11 players aside didn't favour them because they have heavy players who need to be frequently substituted." Berthelette said he won' t need to modify his preparation for the Olympics. "We always worked as if we would be 13 players in Sydney."
Two players in particular now have all the motivation they need to continue training for the Olympics. Melissa Collins and Sue Gardiner have been informed by Berthelette they are assured a ticket for Sydney. "I'm very excited," said Gardiner. "Since the coach named the nine forwards (the goaltenders have not yet been selected) I found it hard to pursue the training. I even thought about quitting and going home to B.C. But now it's great to see me compensated for the all the efforts. And the girls reacted well to my selection. I feel I'm a full member of the team."

Formed in 1889 and based at the Cable Street Baths, it did not take long for the team to win its first major league championship. This gave the Club the magnificent Merigold Trophy for the first time in 1895 when the North East Lancashire League was won. After this initial success the club continued to grow in stature and in reputation and by 1914 it had won the Lancashire Senior Cup for the first time. The intervention of the Great War, no doubt, cost Lancaster many further successes but when the sport resumed after the ending of the hostilities, the Lancaster team was soon victorious with their second win in the Lancashire Senior Cup in 1919.

A bloody war that spilled into the pool
In 1956, the 16th Olympiad was scheduled to begin in November in Melbourne, Australia. At this time, the world was deeply embroiled in the Cold War and, as had become customary, the political war was about to spill over into the Olympics. In Hungary, Soviet tanks and troops were in the midst of ruthlessly suppressing a popular, democratic uprising that had begun in late October 1956. Predating the Prague Spring by nearly a decade, this was the first time an Eastern Bloc country had tried to throw off the yoke of Soviet control. For two weeks Hungary was free, then the bloodshed began as the Soviet Red Army rolled back into Budapest. Students and everyday citizens were mercilessly gunned down in the streets. Thousands more were imprisoned and executed in the following months. The world watched traumatized and paralyzed. An international powerhouse, Hungary's water polo team was defending Gold Medal champions with a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars like Ervin Zador considered by many to be one of the best players in the world at age 21. In the midst of the revolution and only days before the Olympics were to begin, the Hungarian water polo players had been spirited out of the country by their Soviet handlers. Many on the team, fearing this could be the last time they might see certain friends and family, risked furtive farewells with their loved ones the night before their sudden departure. The team arrived in Melbourne a week later to hear Western media reports of savage brutality and murder by the Red Army in the streets of Budapest. The Hungarians began the defense of their Olympic title with the hopes and pride of an anguished country riding on their shoulders.

There is little documentation as to the origins of water polo. It is known, however, that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-19th century England as an aquatic version of rugby football. Early games used an inflated, vulcanized rubber ball imported from India known as a "pulu" (the single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the ball and the game became known as "waterpolo." To attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London Swimming Association developed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools in 1870.
At first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands. A favorite trick of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive under the murky water, then appear again as near the goal as possible. If the player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted to stand on the pool deck. Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one man floating to the surface unconscious. The introduction of the "Trudgeon stroke" by Scottish players changed the nature of water polo. It became a game that emphasized swimming, speed and passing. Scottish rules moved from a rugby variant to a soccer style of play. Goals became a cage of l0 x 3 feet and a goal could be scored by being thrown. Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and the ball could no longer be taken under water. The small rubber ball was replaced by a leather soccer ball.
