Oh me, oh my, Omar is here. And he's there and pretty much everywhere these days. After graduating with honors from the University of California-Irvine in 1997, water polo's Omar Amr made the toughest decision of his life: to fly across the country to attend medical school at Harvard. This decision meant leaving the three most important things in his life at home - friends, family, and water polo - to follow another dream - medicine. The discipline and dedication he found in water polo allows Omar the strength to go after things most only dream of. Dream chasing has made Omar's life hectic, to say the least.

History of Santa Barbara Water Polo The Santa Barbara Water Polo Club was formed in 1975 by Dante Dettamanti who coached at UCSB from 1974-76 before leaving for Stanford University. Pete Snyder took over in 1977. In 1979, Snyder led the Gauchos to the only Division I NCAA title in school history and was among the most successful coaches ever at UCSB. In 15 years at Santa Barbara, Snyder coached 31 All-Americans. In 1980, five years after formation of SBWP, the 18-and-under boys team, led by Pete Snyder and Allen Lorentzen, won a gold medal at the Junior Olympic National Championships. Santa Barbara crushed a strong Newport Harbor team in its own pool and then went on to win the title game in Milwaukee, WI. This team was composed of standout athletes from Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Santa Barbara, and Cabrillo High Schools. Peter Neushul

Did you know...?
A brief look at the history of water polo.
-Did you know that water polo was originally patterned after polo played on land, with barrels floating in the water replacing horses?
As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports were developed roughly based on land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick.
-Did you know that water polo as we know it was originally known as water rugby?
As played in England, the object of the game of water rugby was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool.
-Did you know that "American style" water polo of the late 19th century was perhaps the roughest game ever played?
Not only were holding and sinking legal, but so were the 'jujitsu toe hold and 'back strangle hold.' The main attraction of this version of the sport for spectators was the violence and mayhem, although it was a spectacular game that featured plays like the 'flying salmon,' where the player with the ball could leap 15 feet through the air, from the backs of his teammates, to score a goal over top of the defenders.
-Did you know that water polo originally had the goaltender standing on the pool deck?

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.
