History of Water Polo and the nwpl in Australia
THE NATIONAL WATER POLO LEAGUE
The NWPL, as it has become known as, conducted its inaugural season in 1990. In the early years the competition was dominated by the Victorian Tigers who won the first four championships. The Cronulla Sharks from Sydney's south then started their record run of five championships in six years. Recently the Fremantle Mariners from Western Australia, who in 2004 set the record of eight consecutive Grand Final appearances, have won three titles. Finally in 2002 the Sydney University Lions broke through for their first NWPL title. The Lions successfully defended their title in 2003 to become the fourth team in NWPL history to win back to back titles. The Brisbane Sirromet Barracudas broke through for their first win in 2004. WOMEN IN NWPL The 2004 season saw the first year of competition of the women's teams. A total of 12 teams competed with the Fremantle Marlins beating the KFC Queensland Breakers in the Grand Final. For details of NWPL finalists and details of all of clubs who have played in the NWPL since 1990 please click the link below: NWPL FINALISTS 1990 TO 2004 In the 2001 season the NWPL played its 1,000th league match when two of the foundation clubs, Victoria Tigers and Brisbane Barracudas played a record goal scoring match in Melbourne. The History of Water Polo
(SOURCE: USWP
There is little documentation as to the origins of water polo. It is known, however, that the sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-19th century England as an aquatic version of rugby football. Early games used an inflated, vulcanized rubber ball imported from India known as a "pulu" (the single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the ball and the game became known as "water polo." To attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London Swimming Association developed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools in 1870. At first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands. A favorite trick of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive under the murky water, then appear again as near the goal as possible. If the player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted to stand on the pool deck. Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one man floating to the surface unconscious.

FINA WORLD CUP: gold (1991), silver (1985); WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Very rarely will you find an Olympic athlete in one of the roughest Olympic sports who has
the easy demeanor and control of emotions as does this captain of three Olympic water polo
teams. At 6 feet 3 inches, 210 pounds, he became one of the best players in Olympic history
to play the two-meter position, the quarterback of the offense. For over 15 years and 4 Olympic Games, Terry Schroeder was the USA team leader and one of the most revered players in international competition during his career. He never lost his temper in play. There was not time for that. As the “hole man,” he had to wrestle the heavyweights, take blows and keep focused on the game. That was his strength – to take a beating and hold his own. He was fouled up to 75 times in a game. He had a total of 100 stitches in his face. But he never relented, leading his team to great international achievements. During his career, Schroeder led the National Team to five FINA World Cups winning gold and silver medals, and four Pan American Games winning three golds and a silver medal. On the club level, he played for Industry Hills, Malibu, New York Athletic Club and Harvard, competing seven times on National Championship teams. He was voted National MVP six times and was an All-American fourteen times. He was twice named International Player of the Year and carried the U.S. flag at the 1988 Olympic Closing Ceremony. In 1984, he modeled for sculptor, Robert Graham as the bronze male torso sculpted for the Olympic Gateway at the entrance to the Los Angeles Coliseum at the Olympic Games. This headless figure represents all Olympic athletes.

For 31 years, Monte Nitzkowski produced gold medal water polo teams. It is difficult to find anyone more dedicated to a sport than Monte is to water polo. Fortunately for the sport, his career as a swimmer eventually channeled his talents into coaching, beginning in 1955 and continuing through 1986. An All-American swimmer, Monte specialized in the 100 yard butterfly at Fullerton Junior College in California where he swam and played water polo for two years. Monte transferred to UCLA after Fullerton and his success continued in both water polo victories and swimming accomplishments, culminating in a berth on the 1952 U.S. Olympic Team in Helsinki, Finland, swimming the butterfly-breaststroke. Having Phenomenal success as a coach, his polo teams at Long Beach City College were undefeated for eight consecutive years. He served as coach of four USA Pan American Teams from 1967 through 1983, winning gold medals in all but one competition. An Assistant Olympic Coach in 1968, Monte returned in 1972 as head coach, where his Olympic team won the bronze medalthe first time the U.S. team had won an Olympic medal in water polo since 1932. Monte continued his Olympic coaching career as head coach in 1980 and again as head coach of the 1984 team which won the silver medal in one of the closest finishes in Olympic history.

Australia created a piece of Olympic history by winning the first-ever womens' water polo match of the Games. And while there was no spilled blood in a physical 9-2 win over Kazakhstan there was certainly sweat and tears from the Aussies. Australian captain Bridgette Gusterson admitted to being overwhelmed by the occasion at the Ryde pool. "I've never actually cried before a game but I did today. It was an honour and a privilege and a very special thing for us all," said the 27-year-old. There was embarrassment for Australia's Yvette Higgins in the first quarter when she had her costume ripped, forcing her to dash to the changing rooms for repairs. Unanswered That wasn't the host nation's only hitch as they fell behind after just 44 seconds as Olga Lechshuk scored the historic first goal as Australia took time to shake off what coach Istvan Gorgenyi described as:"stage fright". But Australia recovered to lead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter and finished in style with four unanswered goals in the final quarter.

n. A water sport with two teams of swimmers each of which tries to pass a ball into the other's goal.
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in. (about 70 cm) in circumference into net-enclosed goals at opposite ends of a pool 19 to 30 yd (17.37 to 27.43 m) long and at most 20 yd (18.29 m) wide. The two competing teams consist of seven players each, one of whom is the goalie. Only one hand may be used to advance the ball, which must be carried on the surface. Rough defensive techniques permitted include ducking, i.e., holding a player underwater. Water polo was devised in England in the 1870s and became popular in the United States in the early 20th cent. It is played mainly by club teams, although it is also popular in collegiate competition. Water polo has been an men's Olympic event since 1900; women's water polo was first played at the games in 2000. A far rougher version of the game, played with a soft rubber ball in a larger pool and known as American or softball water polo, was formerly popular in the United States. However, its extreme violence brought it into disfavor, and today only the international or hardball game is played throughout the world.

Water Polo Water polo originated in England during the 1870s, and as legend has it, the sport was developed by spirited young men who wanted to play rugby and cool off at the same time. It soon became popular in the United States and is now a major sport in a number of European countries. Its first appearance in the Olympics was at the 1900 Games where it was the first team sport admitted to the Olympics. Click a link to

Games are divided into four periods of seven minutes each, with a two-minute interval between periods. One point is scored when the ball is thrown or shoved completely past the face of the goal. In case of a tie, two three-minute overtime periods are held; if necessary, two more are played until a winner is decided. Players wear caps of contrasting colors for easier identification; the official rules stipulate white for one team, blue for the other, and red caps for the goalies.

The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Water polo became the modern Olympic movement’s first team sport when it was added to the program for the Paris Games in 1900, but parity for women’s water polo players has been a long time coming. In fact, the sports female half may still be waiting for admission if it wasn’t for some confrontational tactics pursued by members of the Australian women’s water polo team. Led by goalkeeper Liz Weekes, a contingent of Australian players interrupted a meeting of Olympic powerbrokers in the lead-up to the Sydney Games demanding that women's water polo be added to the program.

Filled with angst, controversy and argument, the 1904 aquatic competition was, in large part, forgettable-and in some respects, even regrettable. There were no women, no fast-skin suits, no starting blocks, no lanes or lane lines, no turning boards, no water polo ball per se, and, in fact, not even a swimming pool. But there was swimming, water polo and-for the very first time-a diving event at the first Olympic Games ever held in the United States.

Menlo School water polo coach wins press post at Olympics
Kyle Utsumi named press room supervisor for water polo events It will be an exciting summer for Kyle Utsumi, the Menlo School water polo coach who led the 1998 girls' varsity team to the Central Coast Section championship. Utsumi, who has been working with the U.S. Men's and Women's Olympic Water Polo teams, was recently hired by the Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games to serve as a news media specialist for the water polo events. He will head up the press room at the sport's venue, overseeing a staff of writers, supervising the distribution of press releases, and doing previews for every game. There will be 12 men's and 6 women's teams competing. Men's water polo was the first Olympic team sport, debuting at the 1900 event. This year, women will be allowed to enter the competition, making it at once the oldest and the newest team sport in Olympic history. Utsumi's love of the sport and connection to top water polo teams go back many years and has taken him around the world. A varsity team player at Stanford, he later became a member of the press information team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He traveled to Athens, Perth and Winnipeg for World Cup matches. This spring he was in Palermo, Italy, watching the women qualify for this summer's Olympics.
