Water polo isn't a game for sissies
Serious water polo is something that resembles a wild hockey game played on melted ice without hockey sticks. The reason I chose to write about the sport the late Sun columnist Ted Reeve dubbed the "glub-glub" sport is that a major international water polo tournament will be played July 6 to 10 at the University of Toronto's Olympic-size pool. The World Water Polo League's one semi-final will be the first major international tournament since John Bitove Jr. organized the 1994 world basketball championship. (Small wonder that the IOC never awarded Canada the Summer Olympics). The other semi-final will be played at the same time in New York, with the final six teams three from each semi-final meeting in August in Belgrade for all the marbles ($500,000). Toronto fans will get to see the Athens Olympics silver medallist Serbia-Montenegro, as well as the national teams of Greece (fourth in Athens), Germany (fifth), Spain (sixth) and, of course, Canada. New York will host Hungary, Russia, Croatia, Italy and the US.

By GEORGE GROSS Toronto Sun

These teams will be battling not only for the money, but also for the honour of their respective countries, factors that very often inspire players to resort to some nasty underwater maneuvering. That's why players have to wear two bathing suits. In earlier years, there were occasions when a player was left in his birthday suit pleading for another bathing suit.

No. 14/15 Football Hosts No. 1/1 USC In Pac-10 Showdown
Weekly Release (PDF) 2005 Stats/Results Coming off an impressive 42-24 Pac-10 opening win on the road at Oregon State, the No. 14/15 Arizona State University Sun Devils return home this weekend to take on No. 1/1 and two-time defending national champion USC. (more) Sun Devils Open NCAA Preview in Fourth Place The sixth-ranked Arizona State University carded a four-over 292 and is currently in fourth place. ASU is just eight shots off the leader. (more) Quotes from Dirk Koetter's Monday Press Conference "I think we were a little bit spoiled because in the first three games Sam didn't get touched. They sacked us twice in this game. Sam delivered two great throws. We forget some times because Sam isn't as tall as Andrew Walter. But Sam is all of 6'4 and 235lbs. Sam is a thick guy. He can take a hit. Sam will be good to go for USC." (more) Quotes from Derek Hagan's Weekly Press Conference Senior wide out addressed the media regarding this week's matchup with No. 1 USC

Add a Club or Team to Swimmers Guide Return to the ADD A POOL introduction page. We use the terms club and team interchangeably in this section, if you consider yourselves a "team" and we use the term "club" or vice versa don't be offended. Some of the questions we ask may not apply to your club. And you may not be able to answer some of the questions that do apply. Not to worry. We don't expect that everyone who tells us about a club will know everything. But do tell us as much as you can. Skip any questions that you don't know the answer to. If a question does not apply, and you know it doesn't apply, enter a response "NA" or "not applicable" it will save us some work. The questionnaire is in a free form layout which allows you to type in as much (or as little) information as you have for each caption of a Swimmers Guide team listing.

INFORMATION History of Water Polo in Australia As far back as 1876, a Scotsman named William Wilson devised the first rules for a game played between teams in the water. The first games were held in England as a reaction to the public's boredom with the swimming carnivals of the time. The game was later to be known as WATER POLO, although this name is a misnomer, being stolen from a game which preceded it. That game was played atop barrels and truly resembled the sport of polo. Although very rough in the early days until the late 1960s, the game now is an energetic sport which emphasises swimming ability and ball skill over toughness. It is played by both men and women and is the longest-standing team sport in the Olympic Games, being introduced in Paris in 1900. The sport is governed by FINA, the world swimming body, and is played in more than 100 countries. The Sport
The sport is the most physically demanding of all team games, requiring top performers to cover up to three kilometres in the pool during the one hour it takes to complete a game. This exertion is quite apart from the physical contact, both above and below the surface of the water that players must endure. Despite this, the sport is almost totally devoid of injury from personal contact and generally speaking is played in the spirit demanded by the stringent rules.
