Provides information on water issues including oceans, pollution, drinking water, everglades, conservation and restoration.
http://www.nrdc.org/water/
Whether it's the creek that meanders through town, the lake where we fish and swim, the majestic ocean beaches that inspire our awe of nature, or simply the glass of water we drink, clean water is essential to our well-being. NRDC fights to safeguard drinking water, to protect, preserve and restore our rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and coastal waters, and to promote conservation and better water management in the arid western states.

From the Chair
Eric Perl, Chair
Allegheny Mountain Section EVPerl @ nauticom.net Well here we are back already after a beautiful summer. It sure did go quick. The kids are or will be back to school soon, the Steelers are playing pre-season games, and the Pirates are again out of the pennant race. You can tell fall is near. Over the summer we did have our Annual Golf Outing in June and it turned out to be a gorgeous day, the thunder burst only occurred after our dinner and awards ceremony ended. We had 9 foursomes playing in a very competitive scramble and it was a great time. Even I received a prize so consider golfing next year. Many, many thanks to Jay Klaus and Connie for all their hard work in organizing the event again this year. Hopefully all of you had a great summer and are ready for our fall programs. Our Program Committee has been hard at work over the summer lining up interesting programs. To start off our first luncheon program on September 8th, Ken Bowman review his first year as the SW PA DEP Regional Director and discuss his and PADEP's agenda for the upcoming year. Our October program will take a little different twist from the norm as we will have George Jugovic, Senior Counsel for the Citizen's of Pennsylvania's Future, provide us with the citizen's advocate perspective on environmental issues. These are two programs I'm sure you will not want to miss. The Program Committee is always looking for suggestions for topics and speakers for future programs that will be of interest to our members. If you have a suggestion please contact Peter Kroll or Jill Merrill. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming fall programs.

Tip-Top-Hot Web Sites Contact Join Now Ring Hub ... Random Prin transformarea reziduurilor in resurse utilizabile, reciclarea ofera o modalitate de administrare a reziduurilor solide reducand poluarea, conserva energia, creaza locuri de munca si dezvolta industrii manfucaturiere mai competitive. La fel ca si deversarea reziduurilor in zone special amenajate sau arderea lor in incineratoare, reciclarea costa si ea bani. Cointeresarea societatii in reciclare presupune o constientizare deplina a beneficiilor si costurilor economice si de mediu ale reciclarii, comparativ cu consumurile unilaterale de resurse si stocarea produselor uzate in zone special amenajate sau arderea lor in incineratoare. Cand se iau in considerare toti acesti factori, devin evidente avantajele reciclarii.

151. Water Quality Monitoring: Total Phosphate
How to test for phosphates in surface water. Discusses the conversion of phosphate pollution to water quality index.
http://www.fivecreeks.org/monitor/phosphate.html
Water Quality Monitoring: Total Phosphate
Total Phosphate
  • Phosphorus is usually present in natural water as phosphates (orthophospates, polyphosphates, and organically bound phosphates).
  • Phosphorus is a plant nutrient needed for growth and a fundamental element in the metabolic reactions of plants and animals (hence its use in fertilizers).
  • Sources of phosphorus include human and animal wastes (i.e., sewage), industrial wastes, soil erosion, and fertilizers.
  • Excess phosphorus causes extensive algal growth called "blooms," which are a classic symptom of cultural eutrophication and lead to decreased oxygen levels in creek water.
Test Equipment
  • Hach Total Phosphate Test Kit (Cat. No. 2250-01)
  • Graduated cylinder and cap for square mixing bottle
  • Alcohol lamp, matches, and tripod
  • Wash bottle containing demineralized water
  • Gloves and goggles
  • Waste container
Procedure
If turbidity is low (less than 5 jtu), it is possible to skip the total phosphate measurement and proceed directly to orthophosphate, since very little phosphate will be attached to suspended solids in the water. In the summer, when turbidity is often low, algae is prevalent, and the total phosphate measurement will include phosphates bound up in the algae. This phosphate is not available for use by other plants and should not be included in the measurement. The color comparison performed at the end of the procedure can be difficult if the sample water is colored or if the reagents produce a hue that does not closely match the color wheel. Cerrito Creek is often slightly yellow, for example. The treated sample can be compared to one or more of several reference points including distilled water, untreated sample, and reagent blank (i.e., treated distilled water). Please note on the field data sheet which reference point is used and any difficulties in comparison. If comparing to a reagent blank, please also compare the reagent blank to distilled water and record the offset.

Information on beach pollution, water quality, and threats to the oceans and the life forms that inhabit them.
http://www.nrdc.org/water/oceans/
Pollution, habitat destruction and overfishing take a serious toll on our oceans, so NRDC works to preserve and restore the rich diversity of ocean life and the quality of coastal waters. Our widely covered beach-pollution research has prompted many states to clean up their beaches. We work to stop destructive fishing methods, end overfishing, rebuild fish populations, and reduce the tonnage of fish caught accidentally and thrown away dead. We helped create networks of fully protected marine reserves off the California and Florida coasts, and are pressing for more elsewhere. Finally, we work to ban offshore drilling in coastal areas, while promoting sound coastal zone management.
