The Ecology Center is a member of Earth Share of Michigan and the Michigan Environmental Council Members Local 174 Testing Finds High Level of Mercury in Store-Bought Fish in Michigan Ecology Center released the results of a major 22-state mercury testing project which included samples of swordfish and tuna taken from Kroger in Michigan. The national project confirmed that store-bought swordfish and tuna contain levels of mercury that the federal government has determined may be hazardous to human health, particularly children. EPA Balks on Banning Major Automotive Lead Use Environmentalists criticized the decision by the Environmental Protection Agency to reject a request to ban the use and sale of lead-containing weights used to balance wheels on vehicles. The Ecology Center, a Michigan-based environmental advocacy organization, had asked EPA to ban the sale of one of the largest unregulated sources of lead to the environment, automotive wheel balancing weights. The Ecology Center is now considering legal action to compel EPA action, along with ramped up efforts to pass legislation at the state level to ban the sale of lead-containing wheel weights.

Ecology Will Order Boomsnub to Repair Groundwater Protection System
Olympia, WA - The Washington Department of Ecology will require the Boomsnub Corporation to repair an underground vault designed to protect ground water below the chrome plating facility, located at 3611 NE 68th St. in Vancouver. The plant opened in August 1994, after ground water was contaminated at the company's former location on Northeast 47th Avenue. "Chromic acid and other chemicals are not leaving the plant. Ground water samples taken in February 1997 showed no signs of chemical pollution," said Megan White, manager of Ecology's hazardous waste and toxics reduction program. "The steps Ecology will require the company to take are to prevent problems from happening in the future." The vault is a backup to the plant's main system for collecting spills that may occur from the plating tanks. "Our inspectors have seen only a small amount of liquid in the vaultless than a teaspoonat any one time. The vault is cleaned daily and any spilled liquid is returned to the plating tanks," White noted. The underground vault is designed to provide a watertight seal between the plating plant and ground water. Ecology believes the vault has been breached and ground water can now seep into it.

Environmental scientists design ways to protect the earth and its atmosphere. While some focus on the quality of air, water, and soil, others predict volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and floods.
Wilkes offers both...
a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in EES. You can also pursue a minor in geology or a concentration in water quality, marine ecology, or environmental analysis. Students also turn to our faculty... for research opportunities. Research projects involve the fate of chemotherapeutics in the aquatic environment; groundwater resources in Latin America; and a geological survey of volcanic unrest at Yellowstone National Park using GPS technology.

In 1996, James Dick Construction Ltd. purchased the 200 acre Rockfort Farm property and applied for a license to operate a dolostone quarry on that site. The proposal, known as "THE ROCKFORT PROPOSAL" will result in 66% of the land being mined to a depth of 150 feet, including 100 feet that lies below the water table. The CCC (Coalition of Concerned Citizens) was formed to oppose the granting of that license.
At full production, each day the Rockfort quarry will pump more than twice the average daily quantity used by the 40,000 people of Georgetown. When the quarry is in full production they will pump water at a rate of 6.03 million gallons per day.

International Conference on Headwater Control VI:
Hydrology, Ecology and Water Resources in Headwaters BERGEN, NORWAY, 20 - 23 JUNE 2005 PROGRAM Revised 10. June 2005 REGISTRATION
Contribution to UNESCO / IHP VI
The Conference is a contribution to UNESCO`s International Hydrological Programme, IHP VI (2002-2007) . The conference will address a wide range of water related topics, linking together several themes in rural development, and soil and water conservation. It will also focus on the way different societies throughout history have perceived and used headwater areas in relation to their culture, tradition and religion. The conference aims at facilitating the exchange of scientific knowledge by bringing together people of varying disciplines, such as scientists, planners, practitioners and policy makers. Jointly convened by: The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE)
International Association of Hydrological Sciences
(IAHS)
- International Association on Headwater Control (IAHC) University of Bergen (UiB) Objectives and Scope Headwaters are the places where rivers and streams originate and where the precipitation (rain, snow) is high. They are the ultimate source of a great portion of terrestrial fresh water. Headwaters today face a variety of problems that affect not only the people in the headwater region, but all people living downstream and ecosystems in the associated catchments.

The Water Poverty Index
Millions of people throughout the world do not have enough water to sustain their livelihoods — so they have reduced capacity to lift themselves out of poverty. The relationship between poverty and water is complex, but water is such a valuable resource that it must be managed responsibly, to ensure long-term sustainability for future generations. The Water Poverty Index (WPI) captures the characteristics that link water and poverty. It has been developed in consultation with water researchers, practitioners and stakeholders. This international multi-disciplinary team has identified key issues that provide the framework for a holistic composite indicator, combining data from the physical and social sciences. The WPI framework can be applied at all levels. Communities can assess their own WPI values, and make comparisons. A training package will ensure appropriate in-country capacity so that this can be achieved. Overview:
Despite commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act of 1972, significant scientific and resource management challenges remain in reaching the goal of protecting the biological integrity of our Nations' water resources. Ecological studies conducted by scientists of the NAWQA Program provide data, information and scientific insights into the status, trends, and understanding of factors that influence the biological integrity of streams and rivers. These studies are conducted by investigative teams distributed throughout the Nation, and are synthesized at regional and national scales to understand how stream ecosystems may respond in differing ways to the diverse natural and human factors present in the Nation. About the Shark Research Committee
Founded in 1962 as a tax-exempt non-profit scientific research organization, the Shark Research Committee's primary goal was to assist Leonard P. Schultz of the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) in documenting shark attacks from the Pacific Coast of North America. This initial objective was soon broadened to include conducting original research on the general biology, behavior and ecology of sharks indigenous to waters off the Pacific Coast , with particular emphasis on potentially dangerous species. Early in this research, it was determined that the
