Fresh water ecology can be a fascinating, but often challenging field of study, as the processes and organisms are not always readily observable. Most people have some exposure to the wide diversity of freshwater habitats around them. These habitats form an integral part of the cycle of life on our planet, and are generally a joy and wonder to study. In this course you will learn much about the freshwater habitats around this amazing state of California You will learn about the physical, chemical and biological processes that create, shape and transform freshwater habitats. In addition you will learn how to study these systems as well as learn to identify major groups of aquatic invertebrates within the systems. I hope, at the end of the semester, you will have a rich appreciation for the fresh water flowing in, around and through our lives. A BACKGROUND IN BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY IS VERY HELPFUL FOR THIS COURSE.

Unit Overview
This unit enables students to analyze the environmental and economic impact of uncontrolled chemical dumping. Students have an opportunity to evaluate water quality by measuring the abundance and diversity of organisms, clarity, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, and the presence of nitrates, phosphates and coliforms. Sections in the unit include toxic waste dumping and water ecology. Exercises in the unit include measuring toxic waste, diversity of life, the clarity of water samples, dissolved oxygen in water samples, pH, and measuring the concentration of nitrates , phosphates, and coliforms in water samples. THE MAIN DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCHES
  • Study of theoretical and applied aspects of biological invasions of alien species;
  • Realization of thematic researches with the purpose of the description of process of changes in concrete ecosystems under new population contacts;

THE BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
Biological invasions, both natural, and connected with activity of the man, always rendered essential influence on ecosystems. These influences became especially appreciable in the second half of our century, when changes of natural habitats and the penetration of living organism in new communities occur on a background of general climatic and anthropogenic changes. In many cases, alien species, entering in contacts with populations of the natives, transform the structure of biocenosis essentially. Unfortunately, in our country until recently the attention to theoretical development connected with the problem of biological invasions almost was not given. In particular, consequences of intensive activity on the introduction of living organisms for increasing the efficiency of ecosystems were not comprehended. Based on the analysis of the original data and materials of scientific publications the explanation of the reasons unsuccessful introductions is given; It is shown, that the susceptibility of ecosystems to biological invasions is not always connected with the level of biological variety and that reintroduction of alive organisms by its effect should be compared to biological invasions.

Water ecology Fresh water lakes, ponds and rivers Standing water communities The Marine Environment Fresh water lakes, ponds and rivers The freshwater environment is discontinuous unlike the continuous marine biome. This means that different freshwater ecosystems are isolated from each other often by large tracts of land. Due to the variation in the volume and quality of the water present in these ecosystems there tends to be less diversity in the variety of organisms living in the ecosystem when compared to marine environments. Freshwater ecosystems may be classified as either standing water (lakes, ponds and swamps) or running water (streams creeks, dams and rivers). Different communities tend to be adapted to the different environments in these ecosystems. Environment Characteristics Typical Organisms Rapid streams Rapid water flow makes a firm bottom. Waste Waster Treatment
The pollution of groundwater and oceans by sewage and other contaminants is an extremely serious environmental problem. Not only do intensive human settlements release quantities of effluent far above the natural carrying capacity of the surrounding environment, but the problem has been exacerbated by the removal, or "reclaimation", of wetlands which previously would have absorbed the material. In the wrong place sewage is a dangerous problem, containing pathogenic microorganisms and organic pollutants, however it is also a nutrient-rich resource, for a truly sustainable approach to dealing with sewage to be born this is how we must view it. Sewage as Problem
Sewage contains pathogenic organisms dangerous to health, as well as other pollutants, and can cause disturbance of natural ecosystems due to high levels of organic materials entering the system. 26 billion litres of sewage is produced everyday in the UK, of which 1.4 billion is discharged untreated into the sea. The high levels of organic matter can cause eutrophication of the water, basically high levels of biological productivity which can alter the ecosystem balance. Eutrophic waters are characterized by the presence of highly dense phytoplankton crops called algal blooms. This increased productivity can change the entire ecosystem of the water body due to the greater food output and reduced oxygen in deep water. Extreme cases of eutrophication, hypertrophication, result in noxious algal blooms which can kill vast numbers of fish and render shellfish etc poisoness to eat.

The Lithuanian karst region covers about 1000 km in the northern part of the country. This is the most vulnerable area from a pollution point of view. The structure of the total dissolved solids (TDS) shows that the flow of rivers in the karst region is from hydraulically interconnected aquifers. For the last decade (1991-2000) TDS has varied considerably, from 529 to 732 mg/l. The predominant sources of nitrogen and phosphorus within the headwaters of the monitored rivers were diffuse and agricultural in nature. Downstream from the towns nitrogen and especially phosphorus showed both diffuse and point source signals. Contributions of point sources to the stream pollution by nutrients prevail.
