General:
The inland or central bearded dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) is rapidly becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. A moderate-sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail), it has a melow dispostion and seems to enjoy interacting with humans. A native to south, central Australia (see range map at right) Pogona viticeps can be found in arid, rocky, semi-desert regions and arid open woodlands. They are diurnal (active during the day) and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the light going off in the evening. With proper care bearded dragons have lived for 10 years in captivity. Because of very restrictive wildlife export laws in Australia, all individuals available in the United States are captive bred from founder animals imported from Europe.
Housing: Initially a relatively bare enclosure is preferred, either glass aquarium or large plastic enclosure. A screen cover is recommended, primarily to protect the lizard from children and / or other pets. Within the first year the dragon will grow to almost its full length, so while a 10 gallon aquarium may be suitable for a new hatchling, within 6 months or less the animal will require an enclosure 24 inches long (e.g., a 20 gallon long aquarium). As adults, a 50 gal tank (or larger) is preferable, especially if two or more animals are to be housed together. As adults bearded dragons love to climb branches and bask, be sure if several animals are housed in one large enclosure to provide multiple basking sites. They also benefit from having hiding spots. Females especially appreciate having a safe place to escape from the male's attentions during breeding season.

Publication Date: 21 April 2003 ITIS TNS Google MSN The Chinese or green water dragon, Physignathus cocincinus , is a large arboreal lizard that inhabits the forests of eastern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and southern parts of China. Water dragons live in the immediate vicinity of fresh water. They are aptly named as they are strong swimmers and can remain submerged for 25 minutes or more. Water dragons use their swimming abilities and facultative bipedality to escape predators. Today, Physignathus cocincinus is one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade, which is where this specimen originated.

You need a Dangerous Wild Animals licence to keep some reptiles in Britain. Snakes and lizards are becoming increasingly popular as pets, and they are fascinating creatures. You can set up a rocky background, and imagine your lizard as a dinosaur, in a prehistoric setting. There's romance about a reptile, but you also need to be practical. These are generally high-maintenance, long-lived creatures. The equipment you need to house them and keep them at the right temperature can cost a lot and take up a lot of space. Large reptiles can defecate copiously and messily, and need a lot of cleaning. You need to have a special fascination for reptiles before buying one, enough of an obsession to put in the effort needed to keep them healthy. You'll also need to have reliable friends, neighbours or family members who'll help take care of your herps while you're on holiday. Some snakes and lizards are easier than others, so if we haven't put you off yet, try starting off with the smaller and more placid types, like bearded lizards, and some of the chameleons and geckos. Green iguanas are handsome creatures, but they can grow up to six feet long, and be aggressive. And beware of being seduced by a Burmese python - it can grow up to 20 feet long!

Jackie and I have 3 children and 12 grandchildren. We keep and raise Bearded Dragons from Australia. We have for over six years now. We think that the Bearded Dragon (the Pogona vitticeps)is one of, if not the greatest of all reptile pets. We just love them! We have the Inland Bearded Dragons and the Lawsons or Rankins Dragons. We also have a few other types of lizards, we also have the Argentina Red Tegu and a few geckos. Following is a list of most of our herps. Everytime we go to a herp show we add to our collection. So it is almost impossible to keep this list current but I will try. (Updated 04/15/2003)

Heathcliffe the Water Dragon A colored picture is coming soon!
Introducing Heathcliffe
Heathcliffe is a Water Dragon.
Not an ordinary lizard.
Heathcliffe is special.
He can swim, climb trees, run on his hind legs and do all sorts of things that ordinary lizards can't. He's also a very handsome lizard. He has black and green and brown stripes, and two splendid yellow splotches on his sides. When he sits still in the garden, you can hardly see him, he blends in so well with the background. He's also a very big lizard, nearly three feet long from the point of his nose to the tip of his long thin tail. He has spiky bits on his head and along his back. He thinks the spiky bits make him look very smart. Sometimes he looks at his reflection in the swimming pool and admires himself. Heathcliffe is very vain. He lives in a beautiful garden at a small hotel in Byron Bay. He's sure it's just the best place to live in the world. The Hotel is run by Alison, who looks after the guests and cooks the breakfasts, and by Ken, who takes care of the garden. The hotel is not very big. It was an old house, built nearly a hundred years ago. Last year, the builders changed the house from top to bottom. They knocked down old bits and painted everything in sight. They made an awful mess, but now it's all clean, shiny and peaceful again. It has a very big garden filled with palm trees and tropical plants and gum trees. There is a splendid swimming pool in the garden with deep blue tiles. Just the perfect place for a Water Dragon like Heathcliffe.

I got ahold of a webcam for a little while today and while playing around I snapped some pictures of the cage I built for my latest addition. The cage is not quite finished, I am working on the waterfall and automation system right now. (Yes my lizards are going to be having an auto-lighting system, 3 zone climate control system, and misting system run by off of a redhat 7.2 P1 100Mhz machine).
The brown one is named E liz abeth, and she is an Australlian Frilled Dragon. You have probably seen one on TV at one time or another. When she is scared she brings the skin around her kneck up and it makes a large frill around her head. She also runs on just her back legs (incredibly fun to watch her chase crickets). The green one is a Chinese water dragon and he is named Freddy. He is eagerly awaiting his new waterfall as playing in the water is his favorite thing next to sleeping.
I also have a Yellow throat plated lizard named Jason (he looks like a snake with small small legs) and a Green Anole (some people like to call them florida geckos) which we just call speedy because of how fast he runs.

HAVE you ever walked near a water course, heard a mysterious splash and been left wondering about the identity of the creature so anxious to get out of your way? You may well have been tantalizingly close to the Eastern Water Dragon. If you were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this lovely dragon before it plunged into the water you would probably see it basking on a tree limb overhanging a creek or river. From that vantage point it can drop without hesitation when threatened and remain submerged in the water for up to half an hour. I t is a semi-aquatic lizard with nostrils on top of its nose which enable it to breathe and check out the area for danger while remaining mostly underwater. It is arboreal - that is, adapted to living in trees and is therefore a skilled climber and uses water primarily as a refuge when alarmed. The Eastern Water Dragon occurs along water courses of the East Coast of Australia from southern New South Wales to Cape York Peninsula.
