They are strong swimmers and if necessary, can remain submerged for long periods of time, up to 25 minutes. They will usually live in groups with one dominant male and several females. The male is territorial, and will attempt to drive off other males. This animal resides in the Reptile Discovery Center next photo

Draco
Draco is a genus of reptiles, often refered to as the flying dragons. All members of this genus have a wing-like flap of skin on either side of their body. These flaps are supported by elongated rib bones. Species in this genus live in tropical rainforests, and the flaps are used for gliding from tree to tree. Members of this genus can glide very efficiently, and lose little height over long distances. These reptiles stay in the trees for most of their lives, though the female returns to the ground, to bury her eggs in the soil. There are 16 species of flying dragon. The following are described on this page:

Chinese Water Dragon General Info: Adult length up to 40". Water dragons can be long-lived pets if maintained properly. These water loving animals do best in large terrariums and benefit from the use of air stones in their water bowls. If possible, small water features should be included within water dragon enclosures to simulate the moving water they are accustomed to in their native habitat. Temperature/Humidity: Ideal daytime temperature for water dragons should range between 75 and 85 degrees. Additionally, a basking lamp should be used to maintain a local temperature of 90 to 95 degrees. Nighttime temperature should remain between 65 and 75 degrees. The humidity for these lizards should be kept at or near 70 percent. Lighting: Chinese water dragons require ultraviolet lighting to maintain good health. Ultraviolet lighting is recommended for 12 hours per day. The use of a timer will help maintain an accurate lighting schedule. Habitat/Housing: Individual juvenile dragons can be maintained in a 35 to 50 gallon terrarium. As adults, water dragons should be housed in a 75 gallon terrarium or larger. A screen lid is essential for proper air exchange. These lizards are best kept singularly. However, for multiple pets, increase habitat size accordingly to ensure each individual has plenty of space to move about and not interfere with tankmates. An undertank heater should be placed on the same end of the tank as the basking lamp. A shelter for hiding is necessary, especially if multiple pets are in the same enclosure. Misting the habitat occasionally will help maintain proper humidity levels and allow for these desert lizards to intake water in a manner to which they are accustom. Substrate

Volume 3 Number 2 March 1, 1999 Off to see the Lizards - by Laurie Fumea (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) May 31, 1998 Even without Moe and Curly, Larry is quite a character. The
bearded dragon and his owner, Georgete Suskie of Johnstown, drew a crowd at a recent Pittsburgh Herpetological Society meeting in the education center of the Pittsburgh Zoo in Highland Park. "They're (bearded dragons) very personable," said Suskie, adding the demonstrations and programs she gives help "break down barriers" between the human and reptile worlds. And that's the main goal of the society - to foster an appreciation of all reptiles and amphibians through husbandry, conservation and education. Many of the group's monthly meetings feature speakers, such as Suskie and three others who recently presented programs - Swantje Willms of East Liberty (newts and salamanders), Allan Taylor of Swissvale (water dragons) and Dolly Ellerbrock of Morningside (giant common green iguanas).
The programs and tips are designed to educate reptile enthusiasts and potential owners. "I go over the basics about water dragons - what to look for and set up," said Taylor.
He said he enjoys the dragons because they are easy to maintain. "They handle very well," he said.

The term iguana refers to a large species of typically New World lizards. Lizards are part of the subclass Lepidosauria which in recent years has been considered a subdivisions of the super order, Dinosauria. Iguanas regularly grow to more than 1.5 m (5 ft) in total length. Marine iguanas will often swim along shore but can dive to depths more than 10.5 m (35 ft), remaining submerged for up to 30 minutes feeding on algae. Their sharp spines and tough, flat faces give them a foreboding appearance. When approached, marine iguanas can puff a kind of steam through their noses, intimidating predators like the dragons of old! The common iguana eats both plants and animals, including leaves and fruit, insects, birds, and small mammals. The well-known dinosaur Iguanodon received its name because its teeth resembled those of the iguana. To the left is the sail-tailed Water Dragon (Hydrosaurus amboinensis) which grows over 1 m (3 ft.) in length and usually lives near streams in Asia. Aided by fringes on the toes of its hind feet, it can run on the surface of the water for some distance before sinking and swimming away.

Thai Water Dragons, Physignathus cocincinus , are also known as Asian Water Dragons, Chinese Water Dragons, and Green Water Dragons. A related species, P. lesuerurii , is often called the Eastern or Australian Water Dragon. Natural Environment Physical Characteristics Male Thai water dragons may reach up to 3 feet in length, and the females are somewhat smaller. The tail makes up almost 2/3 of the length of the animal. They are bright green, with darker areas around the joints and head. There are usually 3-5 light bluish-green stripes running from the underside of the animal to the top of the back. The tail has alternating brown and green irregular stripes, and becomes progressively darker towards its tip. They have long clawed toes that aid them in climbing. The back legs are very muscular and used in climbing, leaping, and swimming. The strong tail provides balance and also helps propel them through the water when they swim. In addition, it may be used as a whip to defend the animal against predators. They have a sticky tongue and small teeth. Water dragons live 10-15 years. Compared to the female water dragons, mature males are generally larger, brighter in color, and have a bright yellow or orange area on the throat. Adult males usually have larger heads, jowls, and crests on the back and the neck, and have larger femoral pores. They will also develop hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail

Agama International is owned by Bert and Hester Langerwerf. They have been breeding reptiles, concentrating on lizards but also a few turtles and amphibians, for many decades. Bert started keeping reptiles when he was in his early teens back in Holland. His first reptile was a large land turtle from Morocco. It is still alive today! In Holland, however, the weather was not good for the reptiles. It was too cold and wet. So reptiles only was a hobby. A hobby that contained easily over 1500 lizards from over 40 species, including at one time two rare Tuataras from New Zealand. In Holland Bert also started breeding super mealworms (Zophobas morio) to feed his large collection of reptiles. He was the first person to breed these now so popular worms in the world. In 1985 the Langerwerfs moved to the Canary Islands off the coast of Morocco. There they built a reptile park for the tourists. After two years they left to start concentrating 100 % on breeding lizards. The park is still there today.

This manuscript will detail the morphologic features of leukocytes of the Chinese water dragon, Physignathus spp. ... As with the bearded dragon the most notable difference between the commonly used Diff-Quik stain and our Modified Wright's stain is the coloration of the granulocytes, namely the heterophils.
