Alice Springs Desert Park
is a world class showcase of Australian desert flora and fauna, and its natural setting brings in a variety of local wildlife in addition to the captive species. On a blisteringly hot day, we saw several of these attractive and speedy lizards patrolling the grounds. place this species in the genus Gemmataphora. Here is a complete list of the reptiles and frogs I saw on this trip to Australia.

Last Updated: 6/9/05 This web site is to show photos of other sailfin lizards/dragons in addition to Einstein. Photos of my female Philippines sailfin lizard Einsten, can be seen on her web site . A sailfin breeder e-mailed me to say that while Einy is an H. pustulatus (Philippines sailfin lizard), all of the sailfins below are H. amboinensis . The one exception is the last sailfin which is a female H. pustulatus If you would like to add your sailfin's photos and information here, contact me Click here to go to the main sailfin lizard page. This is a photo of a sailfin named Gojira that belongs to Jason. It is hard to tell for sure which species it is but a breeder e-mailed me that Gojira is an H. amboinensis . Jason thinks Gojira is female. Gojira is about two feet long and lives in a 55 gallon tank. Gojira may be on-line here These are two more pictures of Gojira. Here are Samson and Delila. A sailfin breeder says they are H. amboinensis

General Information Distribution Habitat Adult Size
— Most adult Australian water dragons are between 60 cm and 90 cm (24" - 36") in total length. Males are typically 90 cm or more in length while females usually only reach lengths of about 60 cm. Temperament Longevity Captive Care Rating
Their active nature and moderately large size require a large roomy enclosure. Diet : Hatchlings and Juveniles - crickets, meal worms, wax worms, other insects, soft fruits such as banana, melon, and peaches: Adults - same as young animals and the occasional pink/fuzzy mouse. NOTE: Though some Water Dragons may not accept fruits at first, it is an important part of their diet and should be worked in. For those that don't accept the fruits right away, try making the salad look more appealing by adding mealworms and purple grapes (they love grapes). Temperature : 20o to 38o C (68o-102oF); Bert Langerwolf, who has bred these lizards for over a decade, houses his lizards outside and reports that they have survived temperatures ranging from -15C to 39C (5F to 102F).

— Most adult Chinese water dragons are between 80 cm and 90 cm (31" - 35") in total length. Temperament Longevity Captive Care Rating Diet : Hatchlings and Juveniles - crickets, meal worms, wax worms, other insects, finely chopped leafy greens (dandelion leaves, Romaine lettuce, etc.); Adults - crickets, meal worms, wax worms, leafy greens and the occasional pink/fuzzy mouse. NOTE: Though some Water Dragons may not accept leafy greens at first, it is an important part of their diet and should be worked in. For those that don't accept the veggies right away, try making the salad look more appealing by adding mealworms and purple grapes (they love grapes). Temperature : 25o to 30 o C (77o-86oF) Required Space : Chinese water dragons require a fair amount of vertical space, as they are skilled climbers and spend a fair amount of time above ground. For this reason, a 4"x4"x2" is great for an adult. Babies can be housed in a 20 to 30 gallon aquarium until they get a little larger. Breeding : Water dragons are sexually mature at 3 to 5 years. After a slight cooling period, breeding occurs with clutches of up to 20 eggs being produced. On average, eggs hatch 67 days after incubation at 29o C to 30o C.

This Care Sheet was Supplied By Agama International
Care sheet for Australian water dragons Food: Newly arrived water dragons will normally start eating after 3-4 days as they need some time to adjust to their new surroundings. If you have recently arrived water dragons, it is important to have the temperature inside the terrarium high enough (80F) if you want them to start eating soon. As in Australia they will stop eating when days get shorter and cooler; they may do the same in your terrarium if temperatures and light periods decrease. At Agama International, Inc. we feed them mainly superworms as they can be fed from a feeding dish. This allows for very easy checking on their feeding habits. They also eat crickets. The drawback with gray- or house-crickets is that they are nocturnal and hide during the day, while the lizards are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. So it can happen that there are more crickets in the terrarium then needed, and that the crickets disturb the lizards at night. Of the cockroaches you should never feed German or American ones for obvious reasons (they will escape and become a true pest in the house). Hissing cockroaches, and deadhead cockroaches (Blaperus cranifer) can be fed easily from a container with smooth sides.

Lizards are novel pets, but equipping oneself with information before purchase is prudent. Their price costs little, but acquiring the more costly and proper diet/light/environment is vital in averting often, preventable health problems such as metabolic bone disease. Preventing potential for salmonella transmission from reptiles and amphibians is also essential. Some good lizards for beginners are green anoles, bearded dragons, blue-tongued skinks, and leopard geckos. Chameleons, other geckos, iguanas, and savannah monitors add challenge for non-beginners.

Water Dragons As Pets: Water Dragons (Physignatus cocincinus) are a popular alternative to green iguanas. They grow to 36" and prove to be an active, but tame lizard. Housing: Juveniles can be housed temporarily in a 20 gallon long tank, but will need up to a 75 gallon as adults. They are arboreal and aquatic, so they require climbing branches and a large pool for swimming and drinking. Substrate: Pick a substrate that retains water for constant humidity. Good choices are Bed-A Beast or Reptile Jungle Mix Lizard Litter. Both should have some terrarium moss added for extra humidity. Cleaning: The cage should be spot cleaned weekly and completely cleaned every month or two. Heating and Lighting: Your dragons cage should be a cool side of 86 degrees and a hot spot of 95 degrees. You can have a heating pad and high wattage basking bulb on the hot side, and a low wattage infrared or black light on the cool side. The low wattage bulb can be kept on at night to keep temperatures around 75 degrees. Fluorescent UVB lighting is a must for proper bone growth. We sell the Repta-Sun UVB 5.0 bulb for this purpose. Foods: Insects (crickets), earthworms, pinkies, live feeder fish. Feed adults and occasional mouse. Some individuals will eat soft fruits.

    LIZARDS Water Dragon
    Physignathus cocincinus
Originat es: Forested areas of South East Asia and Australia(different species).
Habitat: Tropical rainforest. Predominantly arboreal. Close to slow flowing water.
    Size: Up to 3ft.
Diet: Insectivorous. Most specimens of this species available in the pet trade are wild caught or captive farmed; however captive-bred specimens are becoming more common.
Ideally there should be moving water in their vivarium. They need to sit in water to shed properly, and they won't sit in static water. They prefer muggy, high humidity areas; and with the correct temperature and moving water, this can be achieved in the vivarium.
Water dragons are mainly insectivorous, although some may accept some fruit and vegetables. They will readily take mammals such as mice, but this should not be given in captivity as this causes obesity and liver damage. They should be fed a variety of insects including brown and black crickets, locusts and mealworms. It can take years before these lizards reach full adult size. They can be scatty as youngsters, but become much quieter as adults. There is quite obvious sexual dimorphism with the males being much more brightly coloured with much larger jowls

    for National Geographic News
November 16, 2004 Interpretation of Jesus Christ's reported ability to walk on water is left to biblical scholars. But scientists have figured out how so-called Jesus lizards are able to scurry across the surfaces of ponds and streams. The findings improve understanding of the physics involved in walking in general and may have practical use in the development of walking robots. The Jesus lizards, or basilisk lisards, accomplish the seemingly miraculous act of moving on top of water by generating forces with their feet that keep their bodies both above the surface and upright, according to Shi-Tong Tonia Hsieh. Hsieh is a graduate student in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Hsieh and her advisor George Lauder detail the process in today's issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences The finding challenges established rules for the mechanics of legged locomotion, which are mostly known from studies of how animals walk across solid surfaces in a laboratory setting, Hsieh said.
