http://www.lizardheaven.com/bearded.htm
GENERAL
The Inland Bearded Dragon, Pogona vitticeps , is native to eastern continental Australia, but most of the beardies in pet stores are now captive bred. The name Bearded Dragon comes from the beard of adult males, and the Australian word for this type of lizard. Their color ranges from the "normal" sandy colored tans and beiges to Golds, Oranges, and Reds.
Bearded Dragons make excellent reptile pets. Prominent spikes make them look like dinosaurs, but they are usually quite tame and easy to handle. They can even make good pets for children, if properly supervised, and their relatively small size makes them very manageable. A full-grown Bearded Dragon, snout to vent, is less than twelve inches, or approximately 20-24 inches snout to tail.
Bearded Dragons have just about the best temperment of all lizards (although water dragon owners might disagree!), they are generally docile, and many seem to actually enjoy being handled. My two watch my every move around the room, often pacing their enclosures and practically "begging" for food and attention! And boy, can they eat!
HOUSING
Here are some things you need to remember when it comes to housing beardies. First, they are very active lizards and need room to roam. Mel and Sydney thoroughly investigate their environments on a daily basis. (Sydney still hasn't figured out that rocks and driftwood don't taste good, though.) Second, the bare-minimum size for an adult Dragon is a 40-gallon breeder aquarium (36" x 18" x 16"); for a pair, use at least a 100-gallon. Custom wood cages can be used and are a good idea if you plan to house several adults together, but can be difficult to clean due to the porous nature of the wood. This can be overcome by using a non-toxic polyurethane or epoxy coating on the wood. You can also find cages made from molded plastic. They can be expensive, but are lightweight, durable, and easy to clean.

Enclosures
For indoor enclosures I would suggest a minimum size of 2'x4'x4' (Width x Length x Height). Hiding places and branches in one half of the enclosure and the other half should have a water bowl and a sandy area (imitation of a beach or river bank). The water bowl must be in a position where it can be cleaned very easily, as they defecate in the water. This may sound like a problem, but in fact it makes things easier for you as now the whole terrarium stays clean. You only have to clean the water bowl regularly. Be sure the lizards can get in and out of the water easily. I use those things in which you can dip your paint-roller to pick up paint, which are ideal for the lizards. A terrarium which is transparant all around either with screening or glass will make your young water dragon nervous. A terrarium which has only a transparant front and in the back enough hiding places will prevent stressing. After the new lizard is put in his terrarium, it is best to leave and not touch it for a day or so, untill the lizard has learned where to hide in case of danger. Then he will feel secure and will be much less nervous. Older water dragons are not so easily stressed, but will still be more comfortable in such an enclosure.

Philippine sail-fin water dragon
Scientific name: Hydrosaurus pustulatus Country: Philippines Continent: Asia Diet: Fruit- frugivore, insects- insectivore, frogs- ranivore, fish- piscivore Omnivore Habitats: Tropical rainforest, freshwater Conservation status: Lack of information Relatives: Plumed basilisk, frill-necked lizard Description: This large semi-aquatic lizard is found along the river banks, near the water rather than actually in it. The name 'dragon' refers to the high crest of skin on the base of the male's tail, which is supported by bony projections of the tail vertebrae. They can grow up to 90 cm. Lifestyle: When disturbed or alarmed they will drop from branches into water and they are strong swimmers - almost appearing to walk on the water. In fact, the back toes are flattened, enabling the lizard to push against the toes and the water - and to run across the water surface. Little is known about the social life of this lizard.

Water Dragons
Asian Water Dragon, Chinese Water Dragon, Green Water Dragon, Thai Water Dragon: Physignathus sp. Species, Range and Description P. cocincinus . Eastern and southeastern Thailand, eastern Indochina, southern China.
P. lesueurii . Eastern/southeastern Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria) Water dragons are native to the Southeast Asian mainland and Indo-Australian archipelago. Most imports arrive from Thailand or southern China. Males typically reach 3 feet; females are somewhat smaller. Males develop larger heads, jowls and crest on the back of the neck, and their femoral pores are somewhat larger than on the female. Always have new animals checked by a vet for internal and external parasites (bring a fresh fecal sample if you can - or get one to the vet at the soonest opportunity), hydration, nutritional status and overall health. Captive Environment
You will need a large enclosure, one larger than most people think will be needed by a lizard of this size. The reason most are missing much of their faces, rubbed off from the snout back past the front teeth, is that water dragons will literally rub their flesh off and break their jaw bones trying to get out of a too small enclosure. They need space at least 2 x their total length - so you are talking min 6 ft long (side to side), at least 2-3 feet deep and 4-6 feet high to do it right.

Dragons Down Under: The Inland Bearded Dragon
"Oh! A horned toad! I haven't seen one of those in years!" is a comment I often hear when event-goers see my bearded dragon. To me, the resemblance is superficial: the flattened body liberally supplied with sharp-looking spikes of various sizes. The head shape is very different, however, with the bearded dragon's being bluntly triangular as opposed to the slightly rounded head shape of the horned toad (whose proper name is horned lizard, Phrynosoma sp.) which is also furnished with longer spikes protruding from the back of the skull. The horned lizards are native to the American Southwest while the bearded dragons are native to Australia and New Guinea. Australia is home to a number of dragons, a name given to many of their agamid lizards which include the popular bearded dragons and water dragons. Australia has very restrictive export laws relating to its wildlife; thus, the bearded dragons found in the U.S. pet trade are descendants from founder animals imported from Europe. Bearded dragons are gaining popularity as pets. Wonderfully tempered, intriguing in appearance, quizzical in countenance, these lizards do not get very large (especially in relation to the green iguana), and require little in the nature of active training or taming to make them calm and handleable. As with all reptiles, there are important things to know before buying a bearded, and to keep them healthy and long-lived.

Bearded Dragon Husbandry HOUSING
  • Bearded dragons can be housed singly, in breeding pairs, or in groups with one male and two or more Females. Provide a terrarium size of at least 72 inches long by 16 inches wide by 17 inches high for a single adult dragon. A minimum of eight square feet is needed for up to three adults with another four square feet for each additional dragon. A minimum of 10-20 gallon aquarium is necessary for juveniles. It is recommended that juveniles be housed singly, but small groups of similar sized juveniles can be placed together if ample food is provided and if the smaller ones are separated out if they are not thriving. Newspaper or paper pulp material is recommended as a substrate as it is easily cleaned and will not cause gastrointestinal problems if eaten. Play sand (no finer than #30) or decomposed granite can also be used but, is not recommended as sand ingestion may cause problems and sand is difficult to keep clean.

Care of The Chinese Water Dragon
First of all ... Congratulations! I imagine you are either reading this because you are thinking about getting a water dragon, just bought one or already have one. Water dragons are wonderful lizards! If you get your dragon going properly you will have a fairly tame, non aggressive pet! I have written this care guide specifically for Chinese water dragons but there are a few other species that are very similar in care. The Australian water dragon, Sailfin lizards, and most species of Basilisks can be kept in a similar fashion as those described in this document. What is a water dragon?
Genus Species:
Physignathus cocincinus- Green Water Dragon Physignathus lesueurii- Australian Water Dragon Please note that this document will contain only information pertaining to the keeping of the Chinese water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus) from this point onward. The care of the Australian water dragon (Physignathus lesueurii) is apparently similar to that of the Chinese water dragon. There is at least one other species classed in the genus Physignathus, and that is Physignathus temporalis, but I have been told that both lesueurii and temporalis will be re-classed in the near future. Stephen J. Hernandez-Divers, B VetMed, D ZooMed (Reptilian), Exotic Animal, Wildlife and Zoo Animals Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine University of Georgia Athens Georgia USA The Thai water dragon, Physignathus cocincinus , originates from the forests of India and eastern Asia and often remains close to fresh water. This member of the family Agamidae may reach 90 cm in total length of which more than half is tail. Coloration varies from brown to bright green with males often the brightest during the breeding season. Captive bred specimens are far preferable over wild caught imports. Air temperatures should vary from 25ºC (77ºF) at night to 30ºC (86ºF) during the day. Daytime basking areas should reach temperatures of 35ºC (95ºF). Heating requires both basking and background sources. Infrared heat lamps and incandescent spotlights can be used for daytime basking sites, but they must be screened from the lizards to prevent burns.
