Inside the Animal Exhibit, you will encounter over 100 animals that make their home in our Museum because they can no longer survive in the wild. Some are injured so they cannot hunt for food or protect themselves from predators. Others were born in captivity or kept as pets so they never learned how to live in the wild.
Living at the Museum, these animals help us learn about and appreciate California's diverse and disappearing wildlife. Over one hundred and fifty years ago, much of the Bay Area was wild, providing lots of habitat, or homes for wild animals. Today, there are more people, less open space, and fewer plants and animals. We can help animals in the wild by preserving their remaining habitats.
At this web site, we give you a glimpse at just a few of the amazing critters we house at the Randall Museum. We will feature other animals in the future so make sure you come back and visit. Even better, drop by in person to the Animal Exhibit at 199 Museum Way!

CRISIS IN TIGER COUNTRY: An employee of the Forest Department walks through a dried-up stream which used to be one of the main sources of water in the Rajiv Gandhi Tiger Project at Mannanur in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh. Acute shortage of water in the forest is prompting wild animals to venture into human habitations to quench their thirst. HYDERABAD, April 14 IN the rural hinterland of Andhra Pradesh, severe drought and shortage of water is forcing people to migrate to cities and towns in search of employment and livelihood. Farther in the interiors, especially in isolated pockets of jungle tracts, another migration, of wild animals into nearby villages in search of drinking water, is causing concern to the Forest Department and village administration in several districts.

In 1971, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency of the U.S. Department of Interior, was put in charge of implementing the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act . When the Act was passed, the U.S. Senate stated: "An intensive management program of breeding, branding, and physical care would destroy the very concept that this legislation seeks to preserve… leaving the animals alone to fend for themselves and placing primary emphasis on protecting the animals from continued slaughter and harassment by man." Sadly, this Congressional mandate was blatantly ignored and over the past thirty years, no strategic plan to keep viable herds of wild horses on public lands was ever developed.
    National Academy of Sciences
estimates actual growth rates to be closer to 10%).
More Round-Ups Another well-established BLM practice is to thin out herds to the point where they are no longer deemed genetically viable , and then use the threat of in-breeding as an excuse to zero out such herds completely. Three fourths of the remaining wild horse and burro herds are below population levels that would guarantee their long-term survival. Sex ratios in wild horse herds normally average 50% female to 50% male. To further affect viability, the BLM will stack herds with 70% of males, severely disrupting herd dynamics and behavioral patterns.

Much of eastern Texas and the Gulf Coastal Plain has red and yellow soils that are mostly sandy and reasonably productive with the proper use of fertilizers. Parts of the Gulf Coastal Plain and central Texas section have soils based on weathered decayed limestone. This limestone, with its thick cover of native grasses, has formed a rich, nearly black soil. It is one of the best types of farming soil in Texas, although it becomes hard when dry. When wet, it becomes gummy and difficult to plow. Many of the soils of southern Texas are rich, especially along the lower Ro Grande, which has fertile alluvial soils. However, the soils in this area are often not productive because of scanty rainfall.

Adopting a Wild Horse or Burro
Providing a home for a wild horse or burro is a challenging and rewarding experience. For qualified individuals, this is a unique opportunity to care for, then own, a "Living Legend" a symbol of American history a wild horse or burro. This document answers the most frequently asked questions about adopting a wild horse or burro. Additional information will be provided to adopters of a wild horse or burro at the adoption site. What is a wild horse or burro? A wild free-roaming horse or burro, as defined by Federal law, is an unbranded, unclaimed, free-roaming horse or burro found on Western public rangelands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Wild horses and burros are descendants of animals released by or escaped from Spanish explorers, ranchers, miners, U.S. Cavalry, or Native Americans. Why does the BLM offer wild horses and burros for adoption? The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 gave the Department of the Interior’s BLM and the Department of Agriculture’s USFS the authority to manage, protect, and control wild horses and burros on the nation’s public rangelands to ensure healthy herds and healthy rangelands. Federal protection and a lack of natural predators have resulted in thriving wild horse and burro populations that grow in number each year. The BLM monitors rangelands and wild horse and burro herds to determine the number of animals, including livestock and wildlife, that the land can support. Each year, the BLM gathers excess wild horses and burros from areas where vegetation and water could become scarce if too many animals use the area.

The whole process you can see now, watching the movements of the deltriver-bed of Amu-Darya during the stormy spring floods. A t the endless territory of Turan lowland, where Turkestan is situated, two biggest deserts of the world are located - Kara-Kum and Kyzyl-Kum, which are separated with Amu-Darya. The desert Kara-Kum - "black sands" - was named not because of the colour of sand, but because of dark-green bush-woods of the black saxaul and the tree-like solyanka - cherkes and juzgun. Only Kyzyl-Kum - "red sands" - justifyes its name. D esert is hot and dry territory. Often winters are soft, snowcoverless here. From May till October as usually it is not raining. Sometimes in summer the dusty storm rushes over the desert, brought the stormciouds, the sky is pierced with the light-nings, it is thundering, but drops do not fall on the ground - they turn into air in the scorching air. The long frostfree period - about 240 days in the south and 270 days in the south-west - gives the possibility with the beginning of the spring rains to grow the grass up again and to walk fat for the herbivorous animals before the beginning of the frosts.

MBARI scientists encountered this four-meter-long animal with "elbows and wings" during geological studies off the island of Oahu in May 2001. image courtesy MBARI It was like a scene straight out of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. A humongous squid displaying the posture of a daddy longlegs and wide, batlike wings hung motionless in the water just outside the submersible Nautile The astonished scientists inside made no attempt to capture the strange-looking animal. At 4,735 meters deep off the coast of Brazil, they had other pressing research to attend to. But to ensure that colleagues wouldn’t accuse them of telling fish tales, they made sure to record it with the submersible’s video camera. Since that first encounter back in 1988, researchers have captured the 7-meter-long squid on camera eight times in deep waters around the world. But not once has someone laid hands on one, dead or alive. That hasn’t stopped marine biologist Michael Vecchione with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and colleagues from publishing a paper describing the “mystery squid” in the December 14 issue of the journal Science. “It’s a really bizarre animal,” says Vecchione, who is based at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. “Clearly, they don’t fit into any known family of cephalopods.”

IT was a special trainloaded to capacity with horses and dogs, camp baggage, moving-picture cameras, cowboys, photographers, and porters; and when it pulled out of the Nairobi station on the way to the "up country" of British East Africa, the period of preparation passed away and the time of action began. As the faces of the people on the platform glided by the window of the slowly moving carriage, there was good will written on all of them; but also unbelief. There was no doubt as to what they thought of Buffalo Jones's expedition that was setting out to rope and tie and photograph the wild animals of the East African Veldt. "How are you going to hold a rhino that weighs two tons and a half?" "What are you going to do when the lion charges?" Such were the questions asked us by the hunters of the country. They further took pains to explain that a rhino charges like a flash, and that a lion can catch a horse within a hundred yards. These items of information, however, were well known to Buffalo Jones before the expedition was organized in New York, and his preparations to meet the difficulties had been made accordingly.

It is a massive, powerful animal, with the widest horn span of any bovid - more than 6.5' (2 m). The wild Asian buffalo is very dependent on the availability of water. Historically, its preferred habitats were low-lying alluvial grasslands and their surroundings. Riparian forests and woodlands were also utilized. The wild Asian buffalo eats grass and leafy aquatic vegetation. It is mainly a grazer , feeding in the morning and evenings and lying up in dense cover or submerging in wallows during midday. During the midday heat, the wild Asian buffalo frequently wallows in water or muddy pools, sometimes almost completely submerged, with only its nostrils showing. In addition to keeping it cool, wallowing helps to remove skin parasites, biting flies, and other pests. Where there is substantial human disturbance, the wild Asian buffalo is mainly nocturnal A herd of female wild Asian buffaloes with young is led by a dominant matriarch and often accompanied by a single adult bull. Other males live solitarily or form bachelor herds of about 10. Young males spar with each other to assert dominance but avoid serious fighting. They mix with females at mating time.

The animals tend to concentrate in and around mountains, because most springs are there and snow on the slopes may provide the only moisture in winter. Concentrations of up to 100 camels occur near the mountains, but most herds contain 2 - 15 members. The small average herd size in the past 100 years reflects not just the aridity of the environment but also heavy hunting pressure. The range of the wild Bactrian camel in historic times extended from the great bend of the Yellow River at 110 deg E westward across the deserts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China to central Kazakhstan . It was already heavily hunted for its meat and hide in the 1800's, and by the 1850's it persisted only in remote areas of the Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts in

Basically, you and your pets need to avoid contact with rodents and other wild animals because they can carry some very deadly diseases. For example:
    • Rodents can transmit hantavirus and plague. Ticks can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. Mammals such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes can transmit rabies. In fact, bats cause most of the human rabies cases in this country.
When are most wild animals active?
Most wild animals come out at night and are afraid of people. So, if you see a wild animal during the day, you should avoid having contact with it and notify animal control authorities because it may have rabies. How can you discourage animals from nesting in your house?
    • Keep your home clean. At night when insects, rodents and other animals search for food, keep tight-fitting lids on food containers and on the garbage containers. Discard any excess food and take up pet water bowls when not in use.
