IN THE WILD HOME
Animals Animal Tracks Bird Watching ... NDOW Home In the Wild Nevadas's Guzzler Program What's A Guzzler? So what exactly is a Guzzler? Guzzlers are metal structures built in suitable wildlife habitats to provide an additional source of water for wildlife of all types and sizes. The structure collects rainwater in a pond and stores it in tanks; the tanks then feed the water to a drinker that can be accessed by wildlife. There are two main differences in any water development: the way the precipitation is caught and how the water is stored and made available to the wildlife. Large guzzlers have a 3,600 gallon capacity and are constructed with a 30x40 foot metal apron and pipe rail fence. Small guzzlers have a 325 gallon capacity and they are constructed with an 8x12 foot metal apron and barbed wire fence.
Why Are Guzzlers Important in Nevada? “With the amount of urbanization and human encroachment that has taken place, wildlife water developments provide us with another "tool" for wildlife management.” What Kind of Wildlife Uses Guzzlers?

Swamp Animal Printouts Swamps are warm, wet areas that are teeming with both animal and plant life; the water-logged land in swamps is often heavily forested, with trees like cypress and tupelo. Some animals live in the low-oxygen water (some fish, crayfish shrimp , tadpoles, insect larvae, etc.), some animals live at the surface of the water (like alligators caiman nutria , etc.), some animals live above the water (like birds, insects, frogs, etc.), and other animals live in the spongy areas of land surrounding the swamp (like raccoons, deer, earthworms, etc.).

Things That Kids Can Do To Help ***DO SOMETHING NICE FOR THE WILD ANIMALS OUTSIDE YOUR HOME***
First, keep your cat indoors, unless she is on a leash and harness and you are there to supervise. Let part of your backyard grow wild with weeds and brush and tall grass. Animals love to hide and build houses in wild brush and grass. Plant a tree in your backyard with your parents. One tree can provide a home for lots of animals like birds, raccoons, squirrels and bats. Put some dead wood, like old tree stumps and branches in your yard. More than 150 species of birds and other animals can live in dead trees and logs and feed off the insects there. Plant some raspberry, blueberry and blackberry patches for animals. Leave mole hills, ant hills and bee nests alone. Never carelessly turn over logs or rocks. There is a whole universe living there. Put out a bird feeder. You can even make one using pine cones and peanut butter. Spread peanut butter all over the pine cones, then dip the pine cones in birdseed and hang them on trees with some yarn. Just remember that if you start feeding the birds they will begin to expect food. If you forget to feed them during the winter they will get very hungry. They need to eat a lot of food often in the cold weather, so keep the feeders full.

Somali Wild Ass
Range: Northeastern Somalia and northern Ethiopia (in Africa) Habitat: Hilly and stony deserts; arid to semi-arid bushlands and grasslands Conservation Status Critically endangered Scientific Name: Equus africanus somaliensis
The Littlest Wild Equid
The Somali wild ass is one of three subspecies (types) of African wild ass. Overall, the species is the smallest of the wild equids (horses, asses, and zebras). A typical African wild ass stands about four feet at the shoulder and weighs about 600 pounds. (To put it in perspective, the average Grevy's Zebra stands five feet at the shoulder and weighs 900 pounds.)
Check Out Those Legs!
Somali wild asses are mostly gray in color, with a white belly. They do have one outstanding feature: the horizontal stripes on their legs. With legs like that, it's no surprise these animals are closely related to zebras. Like all African wild asses, the Somali subspecies has long, narrow hooves the narrowest of any equid. This unique design allows the animals to be swift and surefooted in their rough, rocky habitat.

Aquarium nets
Kids' old sneakers (to protect delicate feet)
Magnifying glass Drawing boards Clips Paper Plain and colored pencils, erasers and a sharpener PREP Your first and most important job is to decide where to take your children. Because we live by the Pacific Ocean, tide pools are an obvious choice. Every region of the country has possibilitiesponds, streams, marshes, forests, deserts, fields. Even if you've observed your chosen habitat before, spend some time with a nature handbook from the library or bookstore. The Audubon Society series of field guides are the best, and Eyewitness Books offers an excellent series in individual habitats and animal kingdoms. These resources can help you and your kids recognize animals you may have previously overlooked, as well as lead you to the big picture: how the animals live with each other and how they have adapted to the environment.

THIS IS AMERICA #1017 - San Diego Wild Animal Park
By Jerilyn Watson VOICE ONE: Every year, more than one-million people from all over the world visit a huge animal park in the western state of California. More than two-thousand animals live there as they do in the wild. I'm Steve Ember. VOICE TWO: And I'm Shirley Griffith. The San Diego Wild Animal Park is our report today on the VOA Special English program THIS IS AMERICA. ((THEME)) VOICE ONE: The animals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park are not kept in small spaces. Instead, this park provides a large area where animals live in their natural environment. The park is a center for the care, reproduction and protection of rare animals. It also supplies animals to zoos around the world. The San Diego Wild Animal Park covers almost seven-hundred-thirty hectares of land. This area is home to more than four-hundred kinds of animals and thousands of plants and trees. By the end of your day here, you will have seen wildlife, plants and trees from many parts of the world. VOICE TWO: You enter the Wild Animal Park through an area called Nairobi Village. Here, colorful birds fly among flowers, water pools and bridges. Their calls and songs fill the warm southern California air.

Traditional Navajo Taboos
By Ernest Bulows
Navajo Taboos for Nature, Domestic and Wild Animals
Coyote The Trickster
Of all the figures in Navajo life and mythology, Coyote (Maii') is the most contradictory and delightful animal. Coyote is considered a god, a trickster, and an evil spirit. He can not be killed because he is powerful and contradictory. The Coyote is important in traditional Navajo life, but he is the object with almost little taboos. Coyote always seems to be hiding or lurking just out of view. He is a shadowy figure that can be funny or fearsome. Navajos have an omen that can also be considered as a taboo. They say that if Coyote crosses your path, turn back and do not continue your journey. If you keep traveling, something terrible will happen to you. You will be in an accident, hurt, or killed.
Natural Powers and Nature
Don't point at a rainbow with your finger. The rainbow will cut it off or break it. In the Navajo tradition it is improper to point at anything or anyone with the extended fore finger, because of the threatening connotation of the action. Navajos point with the lips. They put their lips in a type of kissing gesture. The symbolic nature of the rainbow as a manifestation of life giving rain is universal. Rainbows appear in Navajo sandpaintings. Rainbows, and anything related to water, have a strong religious significance to the Navajos.
Wind
  • Don't throw rocks at a whirlwind. It will throw them back and chase you.

Exclusive pictures of the elusive buffalo!
The photographing of wild water buffalo is significant as this is the last known population in Cambodia. The last time an individual was photographed was in 2001. As there is a standing bounty on the wildlife trade markets in Vietnam of US$2000 for a good set of buffalo horns, the animals have been targeted by poachers. Yet another goal achieved!
Although the situation is serious in terms of population numbers it is believed that the resident population (estimated 30 - 50 animals left) now at least stands a fighting chance of survival. The contributions made thus far by WWF Netherlands have enabled a site-based project to develop, unlike any other in Cambodia. The rangers and forestry officials of the SWAP team have not only begun securing the area for the benefit of animals like buffalo

    Habitat
Wild Burros range through a wide variety of desert habitats as along as they are within 10 miles of drinking water.
    Description
The Wild Burro was first introduced into the Desert Southwest by Spaniards in the 1500s. Wild Burros have long ears, a short mane and reach a height of up to 5 feet at the shoulders. They vary in color from black to brown to gray. Originally from Africa (where they were called the Wild Ass) these pack animals were prized for their hardiness in arid country. They are sure-footed, can locate food in barren terrain and can carry heavy burdens for days through hot, dry environments. Wild Burros can tolerate a water loss as much as 30% of their body weight, and replenish it in only 5 minutes drinking. (Humans require medical attention if 10% of body weight is lost to dehydration and require a full day of intermittent drinking to replenish this loss.)
    Habits
Wild Burros feed on a variety of of plants, including grasses, Mormon Tea, Palo Verde and Plantain. Although some moisture is provided by these plant materials, Wild Burros must have drinking water throughout the year. They can usually be seen foraging for food during daytime, except for summers, when they will forage only at night and in the early morning.
