Water Activities at The Aloha Camps
Our spectacular locations on Lakes Morey and Fairlee in Vermont offer campers terrific opportunities for fun and learning, both in and on the water.  As it is for all activities at the Aloha Camps, safety is our first concern.
Swimming
Whether in Red Cross or our own modular instruction, free swim, water polo, long-distance swimming, or diving, campers at all our camps will surely improve their swimming skills.  Swimming is a high priority at the Aloha Camps, and we are committed both to safety and to fun in the water.  Campers generally swim every day, 'though at Aloha and Lanakila, our older, more skilled campers may elect a less intense swimming program.  There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a dip in the cool water!
Sailing
Sailors of all abilities have the chance to feel the thrill! Lake sailing is both safe and challenging, as the shifting winds provide lots of opportunity to learn to read their patterns. We launch a variety of boats – counselors can skipper larger ones, with beginners taking the jib, while more advanced campers pilot smaller boats on their own. At Aloha, the girls can also try windsurfing. Our trained staff is always alert and ready to give a bit of advice or help if necessary.
Canoeing
Whether on a quiet paddle before breakfast through the rising mist, in a race across the lake, or while learning to make a perfect landing at a dock, our campers have been canoeing the lakes and rivers of northern New England since 1905.  For our many city and suburban campers, canoeing has a special magic as they explore scenic places and move across the water with no motors or noise.  Experienced campers may learn to paddle white water or explore lakes and rivers in Maine and the Adirondacks, as well as those closer to Camp in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Learning swimming safety skills can help you enjoy a wide variety of water activities that can be enjoyed by all ages and while avoiding injury.
Most drownings happen when people forget to follow basic safety rules while they are in and around water. Learning swimming safety skills can help you enjoy a wide variety of water activities that can be enjoyed by all ages while avoiding injury. If you live in a area where water safety classes are taught, it would be a good idea to take the class as a family, especially if you have younger children. All water safety techniques should be practiced until you feel comfortable performing them for long periods of time. Survival floating, back floating and treading water are all types of water floatation that is designed to help your body relax and conserve energy if you do not have a lifejacket. SURVIVAL FLOATING 1. In a "Resting Position" face down, let your body float in the water with your knees tucked into your chest. You will be holding your breath concentrating on relaxing your muscles. 2. For the second position known as the "Exhaling Position" of survival floating, make swimming motions with your arms until you surface with your head above the water to exhale.

national health museum.org June 6, 2005 Hello! In some parts of the country, the season of water sports and outdoor activities is just beginning. In some regions, the season lasts all year. Wherever you are, summer vacation often means more time to enjoy the water and water related activities. Earlier this spring:
"A U.S. Coast Guard crew in Humboldt County took part in a daring sea rescue, plucking two boogie boarders from an onslaught of rough waves off Samoa Beach. Two teenage boys were found clinging to a single boogie board for flotation at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after a strong riptide dragged them away from shore. A helicopter rescue swimmer was lowered from a helicopter and was able to get a strap around the first boy, and quickly hoisted him aboard. The second boy lost his grip on the boogie board and had to be snatched from the powerful waves by hand. 'They were physically exhausted, and extremely grateful when we arrived to save them,' said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dave Beacham."

Return to Infinitec Home Page Scuba Diving Special Safety Concerns Skin Protection: Reduced circulation, lack of sensation, or lack of movement can lead to skin breakdown. It is advised that carpet strips be used on pool decks and rocky shorelines to protect skin on hands and feet. Feet should be covered with diving boots or other foot coverings and other sensitive extremities should be similarly covered. Medications: Depth of water and water pressure may increase the effects of certain medications to the point that it is not possible to safely participate in scuba diving. Medication and medical history is usually discussed in the first scuba class and individuals must consult their personal physicians about any safety concerns. Pulmonary Conditions: Before anyone begins a scuba certification program, a full medical exam with chest x-rays must be taken. Contraindications do exist for some types of disabilities. Certain pulmonary conditions can affect air trapping, heart conditions and even convulsive disorders. Check with your physician.
