community diaries shop Splash Into Safety This Summer 4 Simple "Water Safety Wisdoms" Drowning is the second leading injury-related killer of kids ages 1 to 14, but these tragedies can be prevented if parents practice four "Water Safety Wisdoms" highlighted by the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. While better quality supervision is critical, the study also found that many adults were not properly fencing pools, requiring use of personal flotation devices (PFDs) or teaching their children how to swim. "We want kids to be active and enjoy swimming, but we want them to do it safely," says U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, who joins SAFE KIDS in this important safety effort. "Drowning is a silent killer that can strike even older, more experienced child swimmers. The SAFE KIDS Water Safety Wisdoms will help keep children of all ages safe in the water this summer." 4 to Follow
As the summer season starts and children are more likely to be in and around water, SAFE KIDS urges parents to follow these 4 Water Safety Wisdoms:
  • Supervision : SAFE KIDS recommends adults take turns serving as the designated "water watcher," whose sole responsibility is to actively supervise children in or near the water (and not allow themselves to be distracted by common practices such as eating, reading, talking to others, talking on cell phones or napping). Active supervision means that the adult can always see and hear the child and stays close enough to intervene in an emergency.

River Safety Tips
  • Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don't.
  • Be sure your white water skills and experience are equal to the river and the conditions. NEVER BOAT ALONE.
  • Wear a Coast Guard approved type III - V, properly adjusted lifejacket at all times when you are in or near the river.
  • Know your limits of swimmers rescue and self rescue on white water rivers. Know when and how to swim for an eddy.
  • Reduce injuries by wearing protective foot wear and proper clothing designed for river running.
  • Helmets are required for Kayakers and canoeists at all times. Rafters must wear helmets in Class IV and above water.
  • Be prepared for extremes in weather, especially cold. Know about the dangers of hypothermia and how to deal with it. When air and water temperature add up to 120 degrees or less, hyperthermia is a high risk. Wear a wet suit and booties in spring to early summer and always in Class V water. Know early signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration in hot weather. Remember certain medications can complicate these types of environmental injuries.
  • Know how to recognize and react to river hazards such as holes, wrap rocks, undercut boulders and walls, rock sieves, and horizon lines across the river.

Contact Bill Ramos at 812-855-5990 and wramos@indiana.edu Inflatable arm bands and vests pose a drowning risk, according to Annie Eakin, assistant director for aquatics with IU Bloomington's Division of Recreational Sports. "Arm bands and other inflatable gear can cause a child to tip forward in the water," she explained. Once in this position, it is very difficult for the child to get upright. Even Coast Guard-approved life vests can be a risk if worn incorrectly, Eakin said. Have a qualified instructor teach you and your child how to fasten a vest properly. Inflatable pool toys are also unreliable as flotation devices. "Toys are not lifesaving devices," she said. "Always watch your child and be sure a lifeguard is present." Boats and booze don't mix.

Sports and Water Safety
Members Home Programs and Wellness Spring is upon us and that means that many of us will venture outside to participate in sports and, depending on the weather, water activities. We’d like to take this edition to help you and your family enjoy those activities in a safe manner. See below for tips on sports safety, water safety and questions that parents should ask when their children participate in organized sports. Sports Safety Tips:
◆ Start out slowly. With the warm weather approaching, we are all anxious to start an activity at full swing. It is important to start out slowly, especially if you are over 30, to ensure that you prevent
undue stress on muscles and joints.
◆ Warm up. Warm-up exercises raise the body’s temperature, slowly increase the heart rate, and get the blood flowing to muscles.
◆ Stretch. During the warm-up it is important to stretch your muscles so that muscles are less susceptible to injury.
◆ Wear protective eyewear. Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children and sports are the major cause of eye injuries in school-age children.
