Don't underestimate water's danger
Many people enjoy water sports. Boating, personal watercrafts (jet-skis) and tubing are fun ways to play, especially during hot weather.
Tragic water accidents happen quickly. The most common reason for these accidents is lack of safety knowledge. Remember, never underestimate water's ability to take your life.
PLAY IT SAFE USE PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFDs)!
Boating
A majority of boating deaths are due to capsizing, falling overboard and collisions.
Boat Safely
  • 75 percent of all deaths on the water involve people who do not wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD, also known as life vests).
  • Make sure there is one PFD for each person on the boat.
  • Wear a PFD at all times, even when getting in and out of the boat.
  • Choose the right size. Children need a child-sized vest that fits snugly.
  • Choose the right PFD for your activity:
Type 1: Float best. Will turn an unconscious person face up. Use in open, rough water when rescue may be slow in arriving. Type 1 devices only come in two sizes: adults weighing over 90 lbs. and children weighing less than 90 pounds.

General Water Safety
Summer is here and that means swimming and other water sports begin to rise in popularity. Unfortunately, with the abundance of bodies of water and swimming pools all over the states, we have a high rate of drowning fatality. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of four, and most childhood drownings occur in residential pools 1. Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. 2. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone. 3. Know your swimming limits and stay within them. Don't try to keep up with a stronger, skilled swimmer or encourage others to keep up with you. 4. Swim in supervised areas only. Never let children swim in unsupervised areas like quarries, canals, or ponds. Older kids are at risk of drowning when they overestimate their ability or underestimate how deep the water is. 5. Obey "No Diving" signs that indicate the area is unsafe for headfirst entries. Enter feet-first into water rather than headfirst if you don't know the depth. In addition, learn the correct way to dive from a qualified instructor.

Jan Mertens, 21 May 2005 The red and yellow flag is used in many countries (New Zealand for one, and I'm pretty sure Australia is another). In New Zealand, the usual situation is that when lifeguards are in attendance the beachside building they use as their office/HQ flies the flag of that particular club (usually a logo, and often sponsored). Two red and yellow flags will be placed on temporary poles hammered into the sand of the beach at either end of the patrolled area, and the public are advised to "Swim between the flags".

Recreational Water Safety Canadians have an abundance of fresh and salt water that can be used for recreational purposes. Unfortunately, waters in and around urban centres and agricultural regions are becoming increasingly contaminated. How do recreational waters get contaminated? There are many sources of contamination. These include: sewage or industrial waste discharged into rivers, agricultural run-off (including manure, fertilizers and pesticides) and urban run-off such as fertilizers which promote algae and weed growth. Other sources of pollution include: storm water run-off, animal feces, numerous bathers (especially those with infections), oil and gasoline spills from power boats and marinas, and pollution from boaters. What are some of the health risks of swimming in polluted water? Microbiological contamination (e.g. poorly treated sewage) can cause a number of illnesses. The most common are gastrointestinal illnesses such as diarrhoea and respiratory, eye, ear, nose or throat infections. Chemical pollutants may also pose health risks but disease-causing microorganisms from poorly treated sewage are a greater risk. Swallowing water is the main way pollutants enter the body. They may also gain entry through broken skin or through the ears, eyes or nose. Other physical hazards are possible when swimming in polluted water. If water is not clear due to contamination or weed growth, objects like rocks and broken glass are much less visible and more likely to cause injury.

Keeping teenagers safe near water... RoSPA joined forces with the Environment Agency to produce the "R U A DUMMY 2?" water safety awareness pack The scorching summer of 2003 brought a sharp increase in the number of drownings during June, July and August, but it is hoped that final figures for the year will be more encouraging. The previous three years had all shown a reduction in drownings, with water claiming 427 lives in 2002. The major problem is still with men from their mid-teens to mid-40s who cool off in inland waters such as rivers, lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs. RoSPA launched two new initiatives to tackle the problem - the one concentrating on youngsters who put themselves at risk near water, the other aiming to protect people enjoying themselves around Britain's coastline.

Where do Children Drown? Swimming lessons for toddlers or preschoolers Watch your child don't expect others to do it for you ... Go straight to links for more information:
Where do children drown? A study published in the July 2001 issue of Pediatrics reports that infants are most likely to drown in bathtubs, toddlers in swimming pools, and older children in other freshwater sites such as rivers and lakes . The study of 1,420 children was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Do not depend on baby bath seats or rings to protect your child. Your child can slip out of the seat and down into the water, and bath rings can tip over. Toddlers aren't strong enough to lift themselves back out of a toilet, bucket, container or wading pool. Consider using a toilet safety latch, don't ever leave your baby alone in the tub, not even to answer the telephone, and empty all containers and wading pools, and store them out of reach. Swimming lessons for toddlers: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against swimming instruction for children under 4 years old. In some areas, drowning is the number one cause of death in children under age 5. Children drown in pools, rivers, bathtubs, toilets, and even large buckets of water. Any amount of water - even a few inches in a bathtub - can be dangerous.

Other Water Sports Enthusiasts
Always keep a sharp lookout for swimmers while operating your PWC. Remember, glare and the sun make swimmers hard to see. Avoid congested swimming areas. Keep your personal watercraft at a minimal speed (just enough to maintain headway and steering) when you are near swimmers. When launching and landing onto a beach, maintain a low speed even if swimmers are not visible. Give sailboats and sailboarders plenty of room. Their vessels do not provide as much maneuverability as your PWC. High speed wakes can cause them to veer off course and lose their source of power - the wind. Often, the vision of sailboats and sailboarders is impaired by the position of the sail(s). A personal watercraft operator who is "heard but not seen" can make even the most experienced skipper or sailboarder nervous. Be familiar with both the Divers Down Flag and the International Diving Flag (also called the Alpha Flag). Displayed on a boat or a float, either flag indicates that divers are present in an area. Avoid the area surrounding the flag by 300 feet or more. Keep an eye out for air bubbles breaking the surface of the water in the event divers have strayed from the safety of their diving marker. Your wake could tip the boat and cause someone to fall overboard. Remember you are responsible for your wake.
