GENERAL WATER SAFETY TIPS
  • Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone. The American Red Cross has swimming courses for people of any age and swimming ability. To enroll in a swim course, contact your local Red Cross chapter. Swim in supervised areas only. Obey all rules and posted signs. Watch out for the "dangerous too's"too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity. Don't mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgement, balance, and coordination, affects your swimming and diving skills, and reduces your body's ability to stay warm. Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather. Know how to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies.

Holidaying Abroad Safely
HOLIDAYING ABROAD The picture-postcard scenes at venues abroad can often mask hidden dangers. People who travel outside of Ireland on their holidays must be aware of the fact that swimming pools in holiday centres, whether indoor or outdoor, may be only partially lifeguarded or not guarded at all. Consequently, extra precautions must be taken from the moment of arrival at the holiday center to the time of departure. The following points should be noted in particular 1. On arrival at a holiday centre, which has a swimming pool, do not allow children to go immediately to the swimming pool until you have checked out the safety arrangements. On many occasions there may not be any lifeguard on duty. 2. It is unwise to go for a quick swim after a lengthy car journey. 3. Never swim after consuming alcohol or food.

Advice on how to make sure your children don't drown FRIDAY, May 28 (HealthDayNews) With the start of the summer season this Memorial Day weekend, parents are being reminded to make sure their children stay safe in and around the water. Drowning is the second leading injury-related cause of death among American children aged 1-14, says the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. A study by SAFE KIDS found 88 percent of children who drowned in the United States in 2000 and 2001 were under the supervision of another person, usually a family member. Along with poor quality of supervision, the study revealed that many adults don't properly fence pools, don't require the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs), or don't teach their children how to swim. SAFE KIDS urges parents to follow these four "Water Safety Wisdoms" when their children are in and around water:
  • Supervision. Adults should take turns being the designated water watcher, someone whose sole responsibility is to supervise children in or near the water. Active supervision means the adult is always able to see and hear the children and is close enough to take action if there's an emergency.

To make the most of the summer weather, New Zealand schools focus on outdoor activities and water sports as part of the health and physical education curriculum at the beginning of the academic year. The first Hot Topic of 2003 looks at how to be sun-smart in the scorching New Zealand sun and how to stay safe in the pool, in rivers, or in the sea. The New Zealand sun The ferocity of New Zealand sun is well known. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and approximately 200 New Zealanders die from melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, each year. One of the reasons for this is New Zealand's proximity to the ozone hole. Scientists investigating the ozone layer discovered that it had been thinning over Antarctica. This has become known as the ozone hole. The ozone hole that forms each spring over Antarctica is triggered by a combination of chlorine pollutants in the atmosphere, cold winter temperatures, and the return of sunlight in spring. The longer the hole remains over Antarctica, the more likely it is that ozone-depleted air will reach New Zealand when the sun is high in the sky, increasing the risk of dangerously high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in New Zealand when people are outdoors enjoying the summer.

Water Sports Safety
The list of water sports that people engage in is very extensive and their popularity is ever increasing. Some participants will be members of clubs and channel their activity through organised club trips and events, others will be 'casual' users, who use their own equipment on accessible waters without supervision. Water sports take place in a wide variety of environments; at sea, at the beach, on lakes, in rivers and streams and in swimming pools. Many people participate in water sports, the British Marine Federation (BMF) estimates that 451,000 boats are kept in the UK and about 3 million people, over the age of 16, enjoy boating and watersports. Here you can read the research - Watersports Participation 2003 PDF format 125kb) - carried out by the BMF in conjunction with the Royal Yachting Association. The National Water Safety Forum is concerned primarily with water safety in water sports rather than other issues, like funding or qualifications. By illustrating the risks involved in water sports the object is not to deter people from participating but to encourage them to get adequate training and education and reduce the likelihood of injury.
