142. USGS Activities In Nevada -- Amargosa Desert Research Site
Over the years, the Amargosa Desert Research Site has provided longterm benchmark information about the hydraulic characteristics and soil-water movement for both natural conditions and simulated waste-site conditions in an arid environment.
http://nevada.usgs.gov/adrs/
In 1976, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began studies of unsaturated zone hydrology at a site in the Amargosa Desert near Beatty, Nevada, as part of the USGS Low-Level Radioactive Waste Program. Over the years, USGS investigations at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) have provided long-term benchmark information about the hydraulic characteristics and soil-water movement for both natural-site conditions and simulated waste-site conditions in an arid environment. In 1995, as a result of finding elevated concentrations of tritium and carbon-14 in the unsaturated zone beneath the ADRS, the scope of research was broadened to include the study of processes affecting transport of contaminants through the unsaturated zone. The ADRS was incorporated into the USGS Toxic Substances Hydrology Program in 1997. Research at the site is a multidisciplinary, collaborative effort that involves scientists from research institutes, universities, National laboratories, and the USGS. Introduction
Poor environmental practices have led to a degradation of the world's water, air and land as well as wasting our precious natural resources. Many of the processes and products associated with modern lifestyles have adverse effects on the environment and it is becoming increasingly expensive to treat and dispose of excessive waste. 'Waste to resources' is an approach that involves the control of environmental pollution, waste minimisation and the consideration of waste products as potential resources before disposal.

This adds up to big trouble for the environment. Americans are generating waste products faster than nature can break them down and using up resources
http://www.learner.org/exhibits/garbage/intro.html
If your habits resemble those of average Americans, you generate about 4 pounds of solid trash per day. This adds up to big trouble for the environment. Americans are generating waste products faster than nature can break them down and using up resources faster than they can be replaced. How can we find ways to meet our current economic and social needs without compromising the ability of our children, and our children's children, to do the same? Our success will depend on understanding the difference between
  • Sustainable practices: practices that provide ongoing economic and social benefits without degrading the environment.
  • Unsustainable practices: "quick fixes" that fill an immediate need for resources. Over time, however, these practices deplete or damage natural resources so they cannot be used or enjoyed by future generations.
In this exhibit, you can find out how to improve next year's environmental record. You'll learn how waste is handled now and how some communities are doing it better. In the activities, you can test your knowledge about hazardous waste we generate in our homes and try to shrink a landfill.

Waste
In New Zealand, we tend to think that rubbish or waste is something we throw away. But in fact most of the waste produced is simply moved out of sight - at best it is changed to take up less space in a tip or landfill, poured down the drain, or released to the air. In March 2002 the New Zealand Waste Strategy was launched. The strategy sets a new direction for minimising waste, and for improving waste recovery and management. In these pages you will find information on the Ministry for the Environment's various programmes on waste. This information will help you contribute to minimising and properly managing our waste.
