They are products used in cleaning, home improvements, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, and a variety of other tasks. Each year, thousands of people are injured by exposure or accident involving hazardous household products. Because of the dangers they pose, these products require special awareness, handling, and disposal. In order to protect health and environment, every consumer should know how to properly use, store, and dispose of hazardous household products. An extensive list of educational resources that can be downloaded from this site is provided below. Many countries, including Canada, have actively implemented policies and programs to prevent pollution and promote waste minimization. Yet, environmental pressures are still increasing and the generation of wastes and the management of their disposal continues to be a concern. In the face of these challenges, and in the interests of supporting sustainable development objectives, new policies and programs are being evaluated, developed and implemented both by government and by businesses. Key among these approaches are Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and stewardship What's New About Us Topics Publications ... Related Category: Environmental Studies toxic waste is waste material, often in chemical form, that can cause death or injury to living creatures. It usually is the product of industry or commerce, but comes also from residential use, agriculture, the military, medical facilities, radioactive sources, and light industry, such as dry cleaning establishments. The term is often used interchangeably with "hazardous waste," or discarded material that can pose a long-term risk to health or environment. Toxics can be released into air, water, or land. In 1976 the Toxic Substances Control Act required the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate potentially hazardous industrial chemicals, including halogenated fluorocarbons, dioxin, asbestos polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and vinyl chloride. Other federal legislation pertaining to hazardous wastes includes the Atomic Energy Act (1954), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (1976), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund Act (1986). Toxic waste treatment and control has proved to be expensive and time-consuming with more resources spent on court battles than on actual cleanup. The disposal of toxic wastes is also a topic of international concern. In 1989, some 50 countries signed a treaty aimed at regulating the international shipment of toxic wastes. In some cases such wastes are shipped to developing countries for cheap disposal without the informed consent of their governments. The often substandard shipping, storage, and treatment methods endanger human health and the health of the environment. See

Earth Day emphasis on electronic waste
Cell phones, music players seen as toxic trouble

A worker at CollectiveGood, a recycler, sorts through old cell phones and batteries at company headquarters in Tucker, Ga.
SAN FRANCISCO - When Earth Day dawned in 1970, optimistic environmentalists predicted emerging technologies would help reduce the nation's reliance on coal, oil, insecticides and other pollutants. But 35 years later, a big part of the problem appears to be technology itself. Tons of computers, monitors, televisions and other electronic gizmos that contain hazardous chemicals, or "e-waste," may be poisoning people and ground water. Activists say the nation's biggest environmental problem may be the smallest devices, and this week they're launching campaigns to increase awareness about recycling cell phones, music players, handheld gaming consoles and other electronics. Frequently, smaller portable gadgets have batteries that are prohibitively expensive to replace. So consumers in affluent countries simply toss them in the trash.

Plastic bottles pile up as mountains of waste
Americans' thirst for portable water is behind drop in recycling rate
Rich Pedroncelli / AP file
These used plastic bottles found a new life in California, where recycling reached an all-time high last year due to a deposit law, but nationwide the rate has been dropping, in large part due to the growth of plastic water bottle sales.
document.write(""); Miguel Llanos document.write(''); Reporter MSNBC The biggest growth in bottled beverages isn't beer or soft drinks or juices. It's tasteless, colorless and sugarless water. And while that can mean fewer cavities and slimmer waistlines, it irritates Patricia Franklin to no end. The director of a nonprofit group that promotes recycling, she spends her workday thinking about the bottles, cans and other container waste that most Americans take for granted. The boom in plastic water bottles has her especially frazzled because while the recycling rate is extremely low, the demand from recyclers is actually quite high. Franklin, who runs the Container Recycling Institute, doesn't blame individuals as much as what she feels is a recycling system that hasn't kept up with consumption patterns - especially when it comes to water.
